    Ambient Sound Helps: Audiovisual Crowd Counting in Extreme Conditions

    Visual crowd counting has been recently studied as a way to enable people counting in crowd scenes from images. Albeit successful, vision-based crowd counting approaches could fail to capture informative features in extreme conditions, e.g., imaging at night and occlusion. In this work, we introduce a novel task of audiovisual crowd counting, in which visual and auditory information are integrated for counting purposes. We collect a large-scale benchmark, named auDiovISual Crowd cOunting (DISCO) dataset, consisting of 1,935 images and the corresponding audio clips, and 170,270 annotated instances. In order to fuse the two modalities, we make use of a linear feature-wise fusion module that carries out an affine transformation on visual and auditory features. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments using the proposed dataset and approach. Experimental results show that introducing auditory information can benefit crowd counting under different illumination, noise, and occlusion conditions. The dataset and code will be released.     Time-delay neural network for continuous emotional dimension prediction from facial expression sequences

One of the main challenges is modeling the dynamics that characterize naturalistic expressions. In this paper, a novel two-stage automatic system is proposed to continuously predict affective dimension values from facial expression videos. In the first stage, traditional regression methods are used to classify each individual video frame, while in the second stage, a Time-Delay Neural Network (TDNN) is proposed to model the temporal relationships between consecutive predictions. The two-stage approach separates the emotional state dynamics modeling from an individual emotional state prediction step based on input features. In doing so, the temporal information used by the TDNN is not biased by the high variability between features of consecutive frames and allows the network to more easily exploit the slow changing dynamics between emotional states. The system was fully tested and evaluated on three different facial expression video datasets. Our experimental results demonstrate that the use of a two-stage approach combined with the TDNN to take into account previously classified frames significantly improves the overall performance of continuous emotional state estimation in naturalistic facial expressions.     Speech-based recognition of self-reported and observed emotion in a dimensional space

    The differences between self-reported and observed emotion have only marginally been investigated in the context of speech-based automatic emotion recognition. We address this issue by comparing self-reported emotion ratings to observed emotion ratings and look at how differences between these two types of ratings affect the development and performance of automatic emotion recognizers developed with these ratings. A dimensional approach to emotion modeling is adopted: the ratings are based on continuous arousal and valence scales. We describe the TNO-Gaming Corpus that contains spontaneous vocal and facial expressions elicited via a multiplayer videogame and that includes emotion annotations obtained via self-report and observation by outside observers. Comparisons show that there are discrepancies between self-reported and observed emotion ratings which are also reflected in the performance of the emotion recognizers developed. Using Support Vector Regression in combination with acoustic and textual features, recognizers of arousal and valence are developed that can predict points in a 2-dimensional arousal-valence space. The results of these recognizers show that the self-reported emotion is much harder to recognize than the observed emotion, and that averaging ratings from multiple observers improves performance

    Using Compressed Audio-visual Words for Multi-modal Scene Classification

    We present a novel approach to scene classification using combined audio signal and video image features and compare this methodology to scene classification results using each modality in isolation. Each modality is represented using summary features, namely Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficients (audio) and Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) (video) within a multi-resolution bag-of-features model. Uniquely, we extend the classical bag-of-words approach over both audio and video feature spaces, whereby we introduce the concept of compressive sensing as a novel methodology for multi-modal fusion via audio-visual feature dimensionality reduction. We perform evaluation over a range of environments showing performance that is both comparable to the state of the art (86%, over ten scene classes) and invariant to a ten-fold dimensionality reduction within the audio-visual feature space using our compressive representation approach

    Fusion for Audio-Visual Laughter Detection

    Laughter is a highly variable signal, and can express a spectrum of emotions. This makes the automatic detection of laughter a challenging but interesting task. We perform automatic laughter detection using audio-visual data from the AMI Meeting Corpus. Audio-visual laughter detection is performed by combining (fusing) the results of a separate audio and video classifier on the decision level. The video-classifier uses features based on the principal components of 20 tracked facial points, for audio we use the commonly used PLP and RASTA-PLP features. Our results indicate that RASTA-PLP features outperform PLP features for laughter detection in audio. We compared hidden Markov models (HMMs), Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) and support vector machines (SVM) based classifiers, and found that RASTA-PLP combined with a GMM resulted in the best performance for the audio modality. The video features classified using a SVM resulted in the best single-modality performance. Fusion on the decision-level resulted in laughter detection with a significantly better performance than single-modality classification

    Audio-Visual Speaker Verification via Joint Cross-Attention

    Speaker verification has been widely explored using speech signals, which has shown significant improvement using deep models. Recently, there has been a surge in exploring faces and voices as they can offer more complementary and comprehensive information than relying only on a single modality of speech signals. Though current methods in the literature on the fusion of faces and voices have shown improvement over that of individual face or voice modalities, the potential of audio-visual fusion is not fully explored for speaker verification. Most of the existing methods based on audio-visual fusion either rely on score-level fusion or simple feature concatenation. In this work, we have explored cross-modal joint attention to fully leverage the inter-modal complementary information and the intra-modal information for speaker verification. Specifically, we estimate the cross-attention weights based on the correlation between the joint feature presentation and that of the individual feature representations in order to effectively capture both intra-modal as well inter-modal relationships among the faces and voices. We have shown that efficiently leveraging the intra- and inter-modal relationships significantly improves the performance of audio-visual fusion for speaker verification. The performance of the proposed approach has been evaluated on the Voxceleb1 dataset. Results show that the proposed approach can significantly outperform the state-of-the-art methods of audio-visual fusion for speaker verification
