    Get PDF
As mobile technologies become more ubiquitous in the general population, it is reasonable to assume that individuals will consume services and software to enhance their aspirations and entertainment desires. This paper discusses a controlled experiment to explore aspects of user perceptions of their use of location-based services. This study examines a location-based service prototype experiment and analysis based on the UTAUT model. The results show significant indicators that suggest behavior patterns of early adopters of location-based services are being observed. We discuss these influences and attempt to explain their significance. Moreover, more curiously we discuss why some of our model was unsupported and postulate why

Mobile phone plays a very important role in people life today; its functionality has been extended from voice communication only devices to internet surfing and data transfer. UUM as a higher education institute, hold and organize numerous events throughout the academic year and it relies on email communications for notifying its staff. Using the email notification to announce the staff for the function is suffering from two main problems which are: First, some of the staff do not check his/her email periodically, so they may miss read the notification email about the function and therefore they will not attend the function. Second, sometimes internet service is not available or staffs are at some place where they can not access internet which will lead also to make them unaware about the function or the notification about that function. This study has successfully designed and developed a notification system in order to be used by UUM to send the notifications direct to the staff mobile phones via SMS and thus helps in make sure that the notification is delivered to all interested staff. Successfully implementing this notification system in UUM will provide the university a reliable and convenient inter communication channel

In the last decade, the number of mobile phone users has increased dramatically. Nowadays, mobile phone has become part of people's life. Today's mobile phones provide not just voice call and messaging services, but plethora of other services. This research is about the utilization of mobile phone for dua and zikr for Hajj. The main aim of this research is to develop a mobile Dua and Zikr in order to help Hajj pilgrims to recite them while performing all the required rituals. At the moment, this research focuses on developing the application on Android platform. In developing the application, all the required Dua and Zikr have to be gathered, compiled and verified before the prototype could be developed using J2ME. The prototype consists of the text and audio files of the recited Dua and Zikr in Arabic as well as the translation in Malay. Finally the prototype has been evaluated by users and experts using two sets of questionnaires. It is hoped that the developed prototype would be able to help the pilgrims to easily and conveniently recite the Dua and Zikr towards achieving Hajj Mabrur

Exploring the characteristics of mobile data service users in Australia

    Get PDF
Mobile data services are increasingly important as revenues from voice calling are decreasing for mobile carriers, and there are many predictions that the use of mobile data services will increase in Australia. However, there is little research on the current use of mobile data services. This study explores the characteristics of mobile data service users. We conducted a survey with over 6,000 respondents. The findings show that as in the early stage of the Internet diffusion, age is the most important demographic variable which influences the pattern of mobile data service use. In addition to age, gender and household income have a role in describing each group’s consumption of mobile data services more precisely. We conclude the paper by presenting limitations of the study and outlining some possible future research

Mobile Services for the Hospitality Industry

    Get PDF
Mobile services appear to be an obvious choice for travel and tourism as the travellers are on the move, which is the first criterion for mobile services to be relevant. The travel and tourism industry, which is one of the largest and most rapidly expanding industries in the world and one of the significant users of ICT in its operations, will no doubt be an important market place for mobile services. Nevertheless, according to a study we conducted in 2003, only a few of the respondents were using mobile services to support their travel but many expressed their intention to use these services when they become viable for them. The travel and tourism industry has seen many dramatic changes within the last decade because of the possibilities offered through the wired internet. When mobile services start to offer an effective alternative to presently used routines and services it is expected that they will have a profound impact on the business models of the travel and tourism industry. The available mobile services in the hospitality industry are not as many and as value-adding as expected and we contrast them with the travellers’ attitudes and expectations in an empirical study. The results and insights collected while studying travellers were later used to build a mobile booking system prototype for a major hospitality chain in Finland

WHAT DRIVES M-LEARNING SUCCESS? –DRAWING INSIGHTS FROM SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING THEORY

    Get PDF
Contrary to its rapid diffusion, m-learning is short of concrete theoretical underpinnings. This study serves as a first important step to apply self-directed learning theory to the m-learning field. Based on a review of both m-learning and self-directed learning theory literature, present study applies findings of prior self-directed learning research to portray current m-learning activities. Evidence is also found, suggesting that self-directed learning theory should be an important theoretical underpinning of m-learning. Based on a reflection on current m-learning initiatives, the paper suggests that, to design a sound m-learning system, a sufficient consideration of learners’ self-directed learning attributes is critical and essential

Understanding Consumers’ Behaviour when Using a Mobile Phone as a Converged Device

    Get PDF
This research develops an empirical model to explore the factors that influence consumers’ behaviour while using a mobile phone as a converged device, i.e., using different functions and services on a mobile phone for multiple purposes. Convergence in this domain is particularly regarded as a social phenomenon that has now existed for over two decades. However, empirical research is lacking in terms of individual’s perception and behaviour toward using a converged device. This research is the first to provide an exploratory study of individual uses of a mobile phone for personal information management (PIM), e-mail, entertainment, and commercial transaction. It also draws from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and identifies some of the antecedent factors that influence the above behaviours and behavioural intentions. Fifty mobile phone users were interviewed and provided their thoughts and experiences of using a mobile phone other than voice communication. The interview data was transcribed and analysed to develop an empirical model. The finding shows that although the TAM has been effective in explaining behaviours in the context of single-functional technologies, it needs further enrichment when applying it to multi-function (converged) technologies. Therefore, the result provides a significant step towards a better understanding of consumer behaviour and creates a better strategy for the market of technology convergence in the future

Mobile Learning Services Acceptance Model Among Malaysian Higher Education Students

    Get PDF
Mobile learning (m-learning) is considered as the next form of e-learning using mobile technologies to facilitate education for teachers and learners anywhere and anytime. Engaging the m-learning services in the Malaysian higher education could improve the availability of education. Students’ awareness of such technology is a key for success acceptance. This research aims to study the acceptance and use of m-learning services among Malaysian higher education students. The main objective is to propose a students' acceptance model of m-learning in the higher education environment. The study investigates the students’ acceptance of behavior intention to use m-learning and its effect on usage behavior in the higher education environment. It provides the knowledge base about the current state of students’ awareness about m-learning services. The study found that both of the environment and the infrastructure are appropriate to diffuse and utilize m-learning in the higher education environment. Furthermore, the results showed that the students have adequate knowledge and awareness to use such technology in their education environment. The limitations of m-learning for education were well concerned by students. The students’ perspective is very important to investigate the use behavior of m-learning in the higher education environment. Findings of the study suggest that the behavior intention to use the m-learning by students in the higher education environment have positive influence on the use behavior. Consequently, the availability of facilitating conditions is an important to influence students’ use behavior. The study suggests several factors as important determinants of the behavior intention to use the m-learning in the higher education environment. Specifically, behavior intension to use appears to be adopted and facilitated by the usefulness of m-learning services, so more usefulness of m-learning leads to more acceptances among students in the higher educatio
