    The impact of technology: value-added classroom practice: final report

    This report extends Becta’s enquiries into the ways in which digital technologies are supporting learning. It looks in detail at the learning practices mediated by ICT in nine secondary schools in which ICT for learning is well embedded. The project proposes a broader perspective on the notion of ‘impact’ that is rather different from a number of previous studies investigating impact. Previous studies have been limited in that they have either focused on a single innovation or have reported on institutional level factors. However, in both cases this pays insufficient attention to the contexts of learning. In this project, the focus has been on the learning practices of the classroom and the contexts of ICT-supported learning. The study reports an analysis of 85 lesson logs, in which teachers recorded their use of space, digital technology and student outcomes in relation to student engagement and learning. The teachers who filled in the logs, as well as their schools’ senior managers, were interviewed as part of a ‘deep audit’ of ICT provision conducted over two days. One-hour follow-up interviews with the teachers were carried out after the teachers’ log activity. The aim of this was to obtain a broader contextualisation of their teaching

    Digital information support for concept design

    This paper outlines the issues in effective utilisation of digital resources in conceptual design. Access to appropriate information acts as stimuli and can lead to better substantiated concepts. This paper addresses the issues of presenting such information in a digital form for effective use, exploring digital libraries and groupware as relevant literature areas, and argues that improved integration of these two technologies is necessary to better support the concept generation task. The development of the LauLima learning environment and digital library is consequently outlined. Despite its attempts to integrate the designers' working space and digital resources, continuing issues in library utilisation and migration of information to design concepts are highlighted through a class study. In light of this, new models of interaction to increase information use are explored

    Controlling Electrical Appliances using Bluetooth & J2ME-enabled Mobile Phone

    This project focuses on the development of a universal remote control system that utilizes the use of Bluetooth and Java technology on mobile phones in controlling electrical appliances. The remote control does not confine to the physical barriers that are normally found at home like the typical IrDA remote controls. The system suggests the usage of Bluetooth technology in order to solve and expand the capability of the IrDA remote control technology that is still being widely used. This is also due to the fact that almost all electrical devices and appliances come with their own proprietary remote control. By having a universal remote control, it is possible to eliminate the need for such many remote controls at home. From the client application point of view, the user interface is constructed using Java 2 Mobile Edition as it is being supported by many mobile phones instead of other of different architectures. From the mobile phone, users are able to connect to the Bluetooth server that then interacts with the circuit where the electronic components reside. Immediate direct manipulation of the circuit is crucial as remote control system is one of the real time systems and it needs to be updated as soon as the state of appliances is modified. As a result, this project was developed using Bluez in Linux, for the server part; and Nokia 6230 Series 40 cell phone for the client application. In a nutshell, the end product gives flexibility to the users by promoting the usage of their mobile phones as a universal remote control for their electrical appliances
