    Information technologies for humanitarian logistics and supply chain management in Zimbabwe

    Abstract: The use of information technology (IT) is highlighted as vital in modern complex logistics and supply chains. It still remains that the number of studies on the relationship between IT and logistics is still quite limited. Based on empirical data from Humanitarian logistics organizations this research outlines a classification of the ways in which organizations use IT in Humanitarian Logistics, and also tries to explain the drivers for these different utilization types. Research findings highlighted that, the use of IT for Humanitarian Logistics matters can be separated into, transaction processing, supply chain planning and collaboration, and order tracking and delivery coordination.     Supply Chain Resilience in a Pandemic: The Need for Revised Contingency Planning

    Organizations have worked over the years to develop efficiencies to their supply chains, which includes efforts to reduce waste, lower costs, consolidate suppliers and distributors, better manage costs of goods sold and inventory, develop efficiencies in packaging, storage, and shipping of product, as well as utilizing digital analytics to manage consumer choices and demands. These are all by-products of world-class manufacturing which have promoted systematic organizational and supply chain efficiencies. However, under economic shocks that are sustained over longer periods of time (e.g., Covid-19 Pandemic) and that affect supply chains from a variety of disruptions, a supply chain that is not prepared or adaptable may be broken or at a minimum weigh down the organization. Therefore, the ability to manage and control risk is a key aspect of effective supply chain management. However, the literature on pandemic risk mitigation is nascent. Thus, this paper offers a review of the extant literature, provides a strategic mitigation model covering five dimensions: leadership, preparedness, digitalization, resilience, and pivoting. These dimensions are designed to help organizations in the future to be more adaptive to events such as global pandemics and other large-scale disruptions and discuss implications for future research

    Toward joint Medical Logistics 2010 and beyond: process innovation and redesign of Class VIII supply chain at a medical logistics company

    The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate current Class VIII supply chain procedures at a U.S. Medical Logistics Company (Med Log Co), process map the "as is" baseline process and propose possible "to be" process redesign alternatives that will possibly improve efficiency and produce long-term cost savings. To perform this analysis, the 1st Med Log Co at Camp Pendleton, CA was chosen. The assessment of their "as is" process includes a historical background on medical logistics within the Department of Defense, a comprehensive material logistics literature review, site visits, personnel interviews, process mapping of the baseline "as is" process, and proposal of two redesign alternatives for the "to be" process. A comprehensive analysis was conducted using Thomas Davenport's Process Innovation Framework and quantitative measurements were obtained using the Knowledge-based Organizational Process Redesign (KOPeR) methodology to diagnosis existing pathologies. KOPeR measurements indicate that the 1st Med Log Co's existing "as is" process is a fragmented, mostly manual procurement process that can be innovated now using information technology as a process enabler. Our results indicate that by formally injecting the use of electronic mail and shared databases into the "as is" procurement process an immediate impact can be realized.     Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in the German Medical Technology (MT) sector are facing a strong competition from low-wage countries developing, manufacturing, and distributing high-quality products globally. For this reason, organisations in this sector require orientation in the implementation of SCM policies to reduce operating cost and to create value for their customers. A multiple case study was conducted to identify SCM issues and best practices in this sector. This study contributes to healthcare operations management literature with a tailor-made assessment tool. Its findings offer new priorities for managers, particularly if they are contemplating a re-engineering of their SCM strategies

    An assessment of opportunities for implementing lean management in the healthcare supply chain of selected clinics in the East London area

    When the current South African government came into power two decades ago they inherited a fragmented health care system whose main focus was on the tertiary care level. The strategy of the current government was to re-focus the whole health care system and prioritize primary health care system. That included setting up district health care systems and building primary health care centres in the areas within the communities in order to make health care accessible to everybody. Due to financial difficulties the majority of the people staying in these communities solely depend on these clinics as they cannot afford to buy health care services in the private sector. The study seeks to assess the current medication supply chain to these clinics with a view of coming up with recommendations that, when implemented, will ensure that the supply of medication by the clinics is able to meet the demands of their patients. Lean management is a system that was started in the manufacturing sector and because of its success there it was later adopted by the service industry. Lean is a system that seeks to eliminate all forms of waste and improve the quality of the service rendered to the satisfaction of the customer/patient. Literature review and discussion of lean implementation is discussed extensively. The findings of the study are presented, analyzed and discussed. In these findings it is noted that the system is functioning very well but there are challenges in these clinics that need to be addressed. Recommendations of how lean management can be implemented successfully to optimize the functioning of the current system are discusse The permission received from the Department of Health to conduct this study came with contractual obligations that the researcher promised to honour. One of those requirement stated clearly that the findings of the study should not be published anywhere without the permission of the Department (see addendums A & C). It is under that premise that the researcher wants to bring this to the attention of the relevant university departments, with the hope of ensuring that this contractual obligation is honoured

    Vendor-Buyer Coordination in Supply Chains

    Collaboration between firms in order to coordinate supply chain operations can lead to both strategic and operational benefits. Many advanced forms of collaboration arrangements between firms exist with the aim to coordinate supply chain decisions and to reap these benefits. This dissertation contributes to the understanding of the conditions that are necessary for collaboration in such arrangements and the benefits that can be realized of such collaboration arrangements. This dissertation focuses on the vendor-buyer dyad in the supply chain. We identify and categorize collaboration arrangements that exist in practice, based on a review of the literature and combine this with formal analytical models in the literature. An important factor in the benefits of collaboration is the benefit of reduced costs of transport, by realization of economies of scale in the context of capacity-constrained trucks. As a contribution to the understanding of the dependence of transport costs on the volume transported, we demonstrate how transport tariffs for orders of less-than-a-truckload in size on a single link can be deduced from a basic model. The success of a collaboration arrangement depends on agreement about the distribution of decision authority and collaboration-benefits. We study a collaboration arrangement in which the vendor takes responsibility for managing the buyer's inventory and makes it economically attractive to the buyer by offering a financial incentive, dependent on the maximum level the buyer permits to be stocked. This dissertation demonstrates that this incentive alignment leads to considerable cost savings and near-optimal supply chain decisions
