    Geometric reasoning for ergonomic vehicle interior design

    The design of vehicles is heavily constrained by legislation and standards. The design of the passenger compartment presents particular challenges due to the variation and uncertainty connected with human activity. Computer aided design systems that address the ergonomic problems are available, but do not generally support the application of knowledge such as standards and legislation. This paper describes the combination of two aspects of the problem (a geometric model of the product and a knowledge base related to performance requirements) in the field of interior packaging of cars. The geometric modelling system handles the spatial aspects and supplies information to an appropriate expert system. The expert system evaluates proposed designs and sends suggestions for improvements back to the design system. The KES expert system and the .SAMMIE computer aided ergonomics design system have been combined to investigate aspects of reach to controls, visibility of instruments and mirror design

    Feature modelling: a validation methodology and its evaluation

    Geometric modelling techniques for computer-aided design are provided with formal validation methods to ensure that a valid model is made available to applications such as interference checking. A natural and popular extension to geometric modelling is to group geometric entities into features that provide some extra meaning for one or more aspects of design or manufacture. These extra meanings are typically loosely formulated, in which case it is not possible to validate the feature-based model to ensure that it provides a correct representation for a downstream activity such as process planning. This paper presents a methodology used to validate the feature-based representation which is based on the capture of designer’s intents related to functional, relational and volumetric aspects of the component geometry. The feature-based validation method has itself been validated through its application to a series of test parts which have been either drawn from the literature or created to demonstrate particular aspects. It is shown that the prototype system that has been developed is indeed capable of meaningful feature-based model validation and additionally provides extensive information that is potentially useful to a range of engineering and manufacturing analysis activities

    Prototype system for supporting the incremental modelling of vague geometric configurations

    In this paper the need for Intelligent Computer Aided Design (Int.CAD) to jointly support design and learning assistance is introduced. The paper focuses on presenting and exploring the possibility of realizing learning assistance in Int.CAD by introducing a new concept called Shared Learning. Shared Learning is proposed to empower CAD tools with more useful learning capabilities than that currently available and thereby provide a stronger interaction of learning between a designer and a computer. Controlled computational learning is proposed as a means whereby the Shared Learning concept can be realized. The viability of this new concept is explored by using a system called PERSPECT. PERSPECT is a preliminary numerical design tool aimed at supporting the effective utilization of numerical experiential knowledge in design. After a detailed discussion of PERSPECT's numerical design support, the paper presents the results of an evaluation that focuses on PERSPECT's implementation of controlled computational learning and ability to support a designer's need to learn. The paper then discusses PERSPECT's potential as a tool for supporting the Shared Learning concept by explaining how a designer and PERSPECT can jointly learn. There is still much work to be done before the full potential of Shared Learning can be realized. However, the authors do believe that the concept of Shared Learning may hold the key to truly empowering learning in Int.CAD

    Merging enriched Finite Element triangle meshes for fast prototyping of alternate solutions in the context of industrial maintenance

    A new approach to the merging of Finite Element (FE) triangle meshes is proposed. Not only it takes into account the geometric aspects, but it also considers the way the semantic information possibly associated to the groups of entities (nodes, faces) can be maintained. Such high level modification capabilities are of major importance in all the engineering activities requiring fast modifications of meshes without going back to the CAD model. This is especially true in the context of industrial maintenance where the engineers often have to solve critical problems in very short time. Indeed, in this case, the product is already designed, the CAD models are not necessarily available and the FE models might be tuned. Thus, the product behaviour has to be studied and improved during its exploitation while prototyping directly several alternate solutions. Such a framework also finds interest in the preliminary design phases where alternative solutions have to be simulated. The algorithm first removes the intersecting faces in an n-ring neighbourhood so that the filling of the created holes produces triangles whose sizes smoothly evolve according to the possibly heterogeneous sizes of the surrounding triagles. The holefilling algorithm is driven by an aspect ratio factor which ensures that the produced triangulation fits well the FE requirements. It is also constrained by the boundaries of the groups of entities gathering together the simulation semantic. The filled areas are then deformed to blend smoothly with the surroundings meshes

    Research in feature-based design is reviewed. Feature-based design is regarded as a key factor towards CAD/CAPP integration from a process planning point of view. From a design point of view, feature-based design offers possibilities for supporting the design process better than current CAD systems do. The evolution of feature definitions is briefly discussed. Features and their role in the design process and as representatives of design-objects and design-object knowledge are discussed. The main research issues related to feature-based design are outlined. These are: feature representation, features and tolerances, feature validation, multiple viewpoints towards features, features and standardization, and features and languages. An overview of some academic feature-based design systems is provided. Future research issues in feature-based design are outlined. The conclusion is that feature-based design is still in its infancy, and that more research is needed for a better support of the design process and better integration with manufacturing, although major advances have already been made

    Integrated product relationships management : a model to enable concurrent product design and assembly sequence planning

    The paper describes a novel approach to product relationships management in the context of concurrent engineering and product lifecycle management (PLM). Current industrial practices in product data management and manufacturing process management systems require better efficiency, flexibility, and sensitivity in managing product information at various levels of abstraction throughout its lifecycle. The aim of the proposed work is to manage vital yet complex and inherent product relationship information to enable concurrent product design and assembly sequence planning. Indeed, the definition of the product with its assembly sequence requires the management and the understanding of the numerous product relationships, ensuring consistency between the product and its components. This main objective stresses the relational design paradigm by focusing on product relationships along its lifecycle. This paper gives the detailed description of the background and models which highlight the need for a more efficient PLM approach. The proposed theoretical approach is then described in detail. A separate paper will focus on the implementation of the proposed approach in a PLM-based application, and an in-depth case study to evaluate the implementation of the novel approach will also be given
