    Efficient Continuous Beam Steering for Planar Arrays of Differential Microphones

    Performing continuous beam steering, from planar arrays of high-order differential microphones, is not trivial. The main problem is that shape-preserving beams can be steered only in a finite set of privileged directions, which depend on the position and the number of physical microphones. In this letter, we propose a simple and computationally inexpensive method for alleviating this problem using planar microphone arrays. Given two identical reference beams pointing in two different directions, we show how to build a beam of nearly constant shape, which can be continuously steered between such two directions. The proposed method, unlike the diffused steering approaches based on linear combinations of eigenbeams (spherical harmonics), is applicable to planar arrays also if we deal with beams characterized by high-order polar patterns. Using the coefficients of the Fourier series of the polar patterns, we also show how to find a tradeoff between shape invariance of the steered beam, and maximum angular displacement between the two reference beams. We show the effectiveness of the proposed method through the analysis of models based on first-, second-, and third-order differential microphones

    Speech Enhancement using Multiple Transducers

    In this thesis, three methods of speech enhancement techniques are investigated with applications in extreme noise environments. Various beamforming techniques are evaluated for their performance characteristics in terms of signal to (distant) noise ratio and tolerance to design imperfections. Two suitable designs are identified with contrasting performance characteristics — the second order differential array, with excellent noise rejection but poor robustness; and a least squares design, with adequate noise rejection and good robustness. Adaptive filters are introduced in the context of a simple noise canceller and later a post-processor for a dual beamformer system. Modifications to the least mean squares (LMS) filter are introduced to tolerate cross-talk between microphones or beamformer outputs. An adaptive filter based post-processor beamforming system is designed and evaluated using a simulation involving speech in noisy environments. The beamforming methods developed are combined with the modified LMS adaptive filter to further reduce noise (if possible) based on correlations between noise signals in a beamformer directed to the talker and a complementary beamformer (nullformer) directed away from the talker. This system shows small, but not insignificant, improvements in noise reduction over purely beamforming based methods. Blind source separation is introduced briefly as a potential future method for enhancing speech in noisy environments. The FastICA algorithm is evaluated on existing data sets and found to perform similarly to the post-processing system developed in this thesis.     Surround by Sound: A Review of Spatial Audio Recording and Reproduction

    In this article, a systematic overview of various recording and reproduction techniques for spatial audio is presented. While binaural recording and rendering is designed to resemble the human two-ear auditory system and reproduce sounds specifically for a listener’s two ears, soundfield recording and reproduction using a large number of microphones and loudspeakers replicate an acoustic scene within a region. These two fundamentally different types of techniques are discussed in the paper. A recent popular area, multi-zone reproduction, is also briefly reviewed in the paper.     Interface Circuits for Microsensor Integrated Systems

[Recent advances in sensing technologies, especially those for Microsensor Integrated Systems, have led to several new commercial applications. Among these, low voltage and low power circuit architectures have gained growing attention, being suitable for portable long battery life devices. The aim is to improve the performances of actual interface circuits and systems, both in terms of voltage mode and current mode, in order to overcome the potential problems due to technology scaling and different technology integrations. Related problems, especially those concerning parasitics, lead to a severe interface design attention, especially concerning the analog front-end and novel and smart architecture must be explored and tested, both at simulation and prototype level. Moreover, the growing demand for autonomous systems gets even harder the interface design due to the need of energy-aware cost-effective circuit interfaces integrating, where possible, energy harvesting solutions. The objective of this Special Issue is to explore the potential solutions to overcome actual limitations in sensor interface circuits and systems, especially those for low voltage and low power Microsensor Integrated Systems. The present Special Issue aims to present and highlight the advances and the latest novel and emergent results on this topic, showing best practices, implementations and applications. The Guest Editors invite to submit original research contributions dealing with sensor interfacing related to this specific topic. Additionally, application oriented and review papers are encouraged.

    Enhancements to the Generalized Sidelobe Canceller for Audio Beamforming in an Immersive Environment

    The Generalized Sidelobe Canceller is an adaptive algorithm for optimally estimating the parameters for beamforming, the signal processing technique of combining data from an array of sensors to improve SNR at a point in space. This work focuses on the algorithm’s application to widely-separated microphone arrays with irregular distributions used for human voice capture. Methods are presented for improving the performance of the algorithm’s blocking matrix, a stage that creates a noise reference for elimination, by proposing a stochastic model for amplitude correction and enhanced use of cross correlation for phase correction and time-difference of arrival estimation via a correlation coefficient threshold. This correlation technique is also applied to a multilateration algorithm for an efficient method of explicit target tracking. In addition, the underlying microphone array geometry is studied with parameters and guidelines for evaluation proposed. Finally, an analysis of the stability of the system is performed with respect to its adaptation parameters

    The reproduction of realistic soundscapes in consumer electronic applications has been a driving force behind the development of spatial audio signal processing techniques. In order to accurately reproduce or decompose a particular spatial sound field, being able to exploit or estimate the effects of the acoustic environment becomes essential. This requires both an understanding of the source of the complexity in the acoustic channel (the acoustic path between a source and a receiver) and the ability to characterize its spatial attributes. In this thesis, we explore how to exploit or overcome the effects of the acoustic channel for sound source localization and sound field reproduction. The behaviour of a typical acoustic channel can be visualized as a transformation of its free field behaviour, due to scattering and reflections off the measurement apparatus and the surfaces in a room. These spatial effects can be modelled using the solutions to the acoustic wave equation, yet the physical nature of these scatterers typically results in complex behaviour with frequency. The first half of this thesis explores how to exploit this diversity in the frequency-domain for sound source localization, a concept that has not been considered previously. We first extract down-converted subband signals from the broadband audio signal, and collate these signals, such that the spatial diversity is retained. A signal model is then developed to exploit the channel's spatial information using a signal subspace approach. We show that this concept can be applied to multi-sensor arrays on complex-shaped rigid bodies as well as the special case of binaural localization. In both c! ases, an improvement in the closely spaced source resolution is demonstrated over traditional techniques, through simulations and experiments using a KEMAR manikin. The binaural analysis further indicates that the human localization performance in certain spatial regions is limited by the lack of spatial diversity, as suggested in perceptual experiments in the literature. Finally, the possibility of exploiting known inter-subband correlated sources (e.g., speech) for localization in under-determined systems is demonstrated. The second half of this thesis considers reverberation control, where reverberation is modelled as a superposition of sound fields created by a number of spatially distributed sources. We consider the mode/wave-domain description of the sound field, and propose modelling the reverberant modes as linear transformations of the desired sound field modes. This is a novel concept, as we consider each mode transformation to be independent of other modes. This model is then extended to sound field control, and used to derive the compensation signals required at the loudspeakers to equalize the reverberation. We show that estimating the reverberant channel and controlling the sound field now becomes a single adaptive filtering problem in the mode-domain, where the modes can be adapted independently. The performance of the proposed method is compared with existing adaptive and non-adaptive sound field control techniques through simulations. Finally, it is shown that an order of magnitude reduction in the computational complexity can be achieved, while maintaining comparable performance to existing adaptive control techniques

    Fourier based high-resolution near-field sound imaging

    Noise pollution is a generally acknowledged problem in modern day society. The current tendencies towards lightweight and cheaper product design are primarily responsible for increasing nuisance, annoyance and environmental problems caused by acoustic noise. There are several reasons for research towards technologies that facilitate acoustic noise reduction. Nowadays, low noise design of consumer electronics, high-tech systems and automotive are restricted to increasingly stringent regulations and quality aspects. Effective countermeasures in order to reduce sound radiation are only taken when the source of sound is known. "Inverse Acoustics" is a very effective method to visualize and quantize the sound sources, which reconstructs source information based on measurements away from the source, yet in the near-field. In fact, the system is able to reconstruct the entire acoustic message that a source radiates in the direction of interest. The current methods for source reconstruction produce sound images with very little detail, they often require cumbersome numerical calculations and models, and they are often highly impractical for industrial applications. This research focuses on fast and accurate measurement and signal processing methods for inverse acoustics that are applicable in practical situations which require high resolutions under hazardous acoustic conditions. The inverse process is based upon spatial and wavenumber domain Fourier techniques, also referred to as Near-field Acoustic Holography. More in detail, spatial properties with respect to aliasing, leakage, signal-to-noise ratio and sensor set-ups are investigated and explicit methods and rules are developed to assist in proper determination of the acoustic holograms. In order to correctly transform the spatial hologram data into the wavenumber domain or k-space, a method called border-padding is developed. This method, which is an alternative to spatial windowing, is highly accurate without slowing down the processing time considerably. Another important factor is regularization, which is required since the inverse process is highly ill-posed. Without proper filtering action taken, noise blows up as the hologram-source distance or the wavenumber grows. In this research project a method is developed to automatically determine the proper filter function and filter parameters, which is a near-optimal trade-off between noise blow-up and deterioration of useful source information. These important properties are combined in a fully automated near-field sound imaging system design. At the Technical University of Eindhoven two versions of this system were developed and built; a large version that is based in the semi-anechoic room of the laboratory and a portable system that is suitable for small electronic devices and high-tech systems. A number of practical cases are used to qualitatively as well as quantitatively validate the improvements with respect to existing methods and illustrate the possibilities for industrial application

    Aerodynamics of a Gulfstream G550 Nose Landing Gear Model

    In this paper we discuss detailed steady and unsteady aerodynamic measurements of a Gulfstream G550 nose landing gear model. The quarter-scale, high-fidelity model includes part of the lower fuselage and the gear cavity. The full model configuration allowed for removal of various gear components (e.g. light cluster, steering mechanism, hydraulic lines, etc.) in order to document their effects on the local flow field. The measurements were conducted at a Reynolds number of 7.3 x 10(exp 4) based on the shock strut (piston) diameter and a freestream Mach number of 0.166. Additional data were also collected at lower Mach numbers of 0.12 and 0.145 and correspondingly lower Reynolds numbers. The boundary layer on the piston was tripped to enable turbulent flow separation, so as to better mimic the conditions encountered during flight. Steady surface pressures were gathered from an extensive number of static ports on the wheels, door, fuselage, and within the gear cavity. To better understand the resultant flow interactions between gear components, surface pressure fluctuations were collected via sixteen dynamic pressure sensors strategically placed on various subcomponents of the gear. Fifteen of the transducers were flush mounted on the gear surface at fixed locations, while the remaining one was a mobile transducer that could be placed at numerous varying locations. The measured surface pressure spectra are mainly broadband in nature, lacking any local peaks associated with coherent vortex shedding. This finding is in agreement with off-surface flow measurements using PIV that revealed the flow field to be a collection of separated shear layers without any dominant vortex shedding processes
