Group implicit concurrent algorithms in nonlinear structural dynamics
During the 70's and 80's, considerable effort was devoted to developing efficient and reliable time stepping procedures for transient structural analysis. Mathematically, the equations governing this type of problems are generally stiff, i.e., they exhibit a wide spectrum in the linear range. The algorithms best suited to this type of applications are those which accurately integrate the low frequency content of the response without necessitating the resolution of the high frequency modes. This means that the algorithms must be unconditionally stable, which in turn rules out explicit integration. The most exciting possibility in the algorithms development area in recent years has been the advent of parallel computers with multiprocessing capabilities. So, this work is mainly concerned with the development of parallel algorithms in the area of structural dynamics. A primary objective is to devise unconditionally stable and accurate time stepping procedures which lend themselves to an efficient implementation in concurrent machines. Some features of the new computer architecture are summarized. A brief survey of current efforts in the area is presented. A new class of concurrent procedures, or Group Implicit algorithms is introduced and analyzed. The numerical simulation shows that GI algorithms hold considerable promise for application in coarse grain as well as medium grain parallel computers
Report from the MPP Working Group to the NASA Associate Administrator for Space Science and Applications
NASA's Office of Space Science and Applications (OSSA) gave a select group of scientists the opportunity to test and implement their computational algorithms on the Massively Parallel Processor (MPP) located at Goddard Space Flight Center, beginning in late 1985. One year later, the Working Group presented its report, which addressed the following: algorithms, programming languages, architecture, programming environments, the way theory relates, and performance measured. The findings point to a number of demonstrated computational techniques for which the MPP architecture is ideally suited. For example, besides executing much faster on the MPP than on conventional computers, systolic VLSI simulation (where distances are short), lattice simulation, neural network simulation, and image problems were found to be easier to program on the MPP's architecture than on a CYBER 205 or even a VAX. The report also makes technical recommendations covering all aspects of MPP use, and recommendations concerning the future of the MPP and machines based on similar architectures, expansion of the Working Group, and study of the role of future parallel processors for space station, EOS, and the Great Observatories era

The scheduling of sparse matrix-vector multiplication on a massively parallel dap computer
An efficient data structure is presented which supports general unstructured sparse matrix-vector multiplications on a Distributed Array of Processors (DAP). This approach seeks to reduce the inter-processor data movements and organises the operations in batches of massively parallel steps by a heuristic scheduling procedure performed on the host computer.
The resulting data structure is of particular relevance to iterative schemes for solving linear systems. Performance results for matrices taken from well known Linear Programming (LP) test problems are presented and analysed
An efficient parallel immersed boundary algorithm using a pseudo-compressible fluid solver
We propose an efficient algorithm for the immersed boundary method on
distributed-memory architectures, with the computational complexity of a
completely explicit method and excellent parallel scaling. The algorithm
utilizes the pseudo-compressibility method recently proposed by Guermond and
Minev [Comptes Rendus Mathematique, 348:581-585, 2010] that uses a directional
splitting strategy to discretize the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations,
thereby reducing the linear systems to a series of one-dimensional tridiagonal
systems. We perform numerical simulations of several fluid-structure
interaction problems in two and three dimensions and study the accuracy and
convergence rates of the proposed algorithm. For these problems, we compare the
proposed algorithm against other second-order projection-based fluid solvers.
Lastly, the strong and weak scaling properties of the proposed algorithm are
investigated
Architectures for block Toeplitz systems
In this paper efficient VLSI architectures of highly concurrent algorithms for the solution of block linear systems with Toeplitz or near-to-Toeplitz entries are presented. The main features of the proposed scheme are the use of scalar only operations, multiplications/divisions and additions, and the local communication which enables the development of wavefront array architecture. Both the mean squared error and the total squared error formulations are described and a variety of implementations are given
CSM Testbed Development and Large-Scale Structural Applications
A research activity called Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) conducted at the NASA Langley Research Center is described. This activity is developing advanced structural analysis and computational methods that exploit high-performance computers. Methods are developed in the framework of the CSM Testbed software system and applied to representative complex structural analysis problems from the aerospace industry. An overview of the CSM Testbed methods development environment is presented and some new numerical methods developed on a CRAY-2 are described. Selected application studies performed on the NAS CRAY-2 are also summarized
Computer Architectures to Close the Loop in Real-time Optimization
© 2015 IEEE.Many modern control, automation, signal processing and machine learning applications rely on solving a sequence of optimization problems, which are updated with measurements of a real system that evolves in time. The solutions of each of these optimization problems are then used to make decisions, which may be followed by changing some parameters of the physical system, thereby resulting in a feedback loop between the computing and the physical system. Real-time optimization is not the same as fast optimization, due to the fact that the computation is affected by an uncertain system that evolves in time. The suitability of a design should therefore not be judged from the optimality of a single optimization problem, but based on the evolution of the entire cyber-physical system. The algorithms and hardware used for solving a single optimization problem in the office might therefore be far from ideal when solving a sequence of real-time optimization problems. Instead of there being a single, optimal design, one has to trade-off a number of objectives, including performance, robustness, energy usage, size and cost. We therefore provide here a tutorial introduction to some of the questions and implementation issues that arise in real-time optimization applications. We will concentrate on some of the decisions that have to be made when designing the computing architecture and algorithm and argue that the choice of one informs the other
