Open access in Italia

This work focuses on the issue of 'Open Access' and, specifically, on the growing Open Access Italian Movement. Recent months have witnessed a remarkable spread of information amongst a not-only-experts-public on this issue. Yet, information hasn't always been correct and coherent with the movement's philosophy, fostering ambiguity and bias. The present article intends to clarify some of the key concepts in this domain, by providing a clear definition of the Open Access Movement, and of its aims and objectives. 'Open Access' means making the intellectual works produced by researchers and scholars all over the world accessible to the public. The Open Access Movement encourages scientists, researchers and scholars to disseminate their works as widely as possible, making them freely accessible to other research communities. The Open Access Movement therefore aims at removing any financial, legal or technical barrier which may hinder access to scientific information, and ensuring that society as a whole may benefit from scientific and technological progress. In our country - as in other countries where Open Access already is a reality - academic and research institutions have recently started to develop open archives. Finally, the article advances useful suggestions on how to make the Open Access Movement stronger within Italian universities

This article discusses the problem of the reform of scholarly communication under the spur of the prices rise of journals, the distribution acceleration times of research results, and the change of organizational and communication contexts for the creation of knowledge in the light of the need of collaboration between scholars and beyond institutional and hierarchical boundaries

L’obiettivo del progetto è di realizzare archivi aperti istituzionali delle Università di Sassari, di Cagliari, di Sardegna Ricerche e di altri enti e centri di ricerca operanti nell’Isola, che raccolgano documenti in formato elettronico derivanti dall’attività scientifica di vari autori (professori, ricercatori, dottorandi, assegnisti, contrattisti, visiting professor, ecc.) ad essi afferenti, attraverso l’archiviazione, l’accessibilità e la libera consultazione in rete della produzione intellettuale e scientifica. Lo scopo è di favorire e contribuire alla più ampia condivisione e diffusione possibile, sia all’interno della comunità scientifica regionale, nazionale ed internazionale che fra gli utenti della rete, della produzione scientifica della Sardegna per: ampliare e rendere più rapida la disseminazione dei risultati della ricerca; migliorare e valorizzare l’impatto dei risultati della ricerca; offrire un utilizzo e un accesso più immediato e semplice ai prodotti della ricerca; dare maggiore visibilità della produzione scientifica del singolo autore e delle università e degli enti e centri sardi che ne supportano la ricerca.Finanziamenti::POR Sardegna 2000-2006::Misura 3.1
