    DIP: Disruption-Tolerance for IP

    Disruption Tolerant Networks (DTN) have been a popular subject of recent research and development. These networks are characterized by frequent, lengthy outages and a lack of contemporaneous end-to-end paths. In this work we discuss techniques for extending IP to operate more effectively in DTN scenarios. Our scheme, Disruption Tolerant IP (DIP) uses existing IP packet headers, uses the existing socket API for applications, is compatible with IPsec, and uses familiar Policy-Based Routing techniques for network management

    The traditional Sockets API is showing its age, and no longer provides effective support for modern networked applications. This has led to a proliferation of non-standard extensions, alternative APIs, and workarounds that enable new features and allow applications to make good use of the network, but are difficult to use, and require expert knowledge that is not widespread. In this paper, we present Post Sockets, a proposed new standard network API, that is designed to support modern network transport protocols and features, while raising the level of abstraction and enhancing usability. Specifically, Post Sockets aims to give portable applications the ability to use a clear, messages based, interface to multi-path and multi-stream transports, rendezvous and connection racing, and fast connection re-establishment

    This article proposes the Implicit Packet Meta Header(IPMH) as a standard method to compute and represent common QoS properties of the Application Data Units (ADU) of multimedia streams using legacy and proprietary streams’ headers (e.g. Real-time Transport Protocol headers). The use of IPMH by mechanisms located at different layers of the communication architecture will allow implementing fine per-packet selfoptimization of communication services regarding the actual application requirements. A case study showing how IPMH is used by error control mechanisms in the context of wireless networks is presented in order to demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of this approach

    Transport of video over partial order connections

    A Partial Order and partial reliable Connection (POC) is an end-to-end transport connection authorized to deliver objects in an order that can differ from the transmitted one. Such a connection is also authorized to lose some objects. The POC concept is motivated by the fact that heterogeneous best-effort networks such as Internet are plagued by unordered delivery of packets and losses, which tax the performances of current applications and protocols. It has been shown, in several research works, that out of order delivery is able to alleviate (with respect to CO service) the use of end systems’ communication resources. In this paper, the efficiency of out-of-sequence delivery on MPEG video streams processing is studied. Firstly, the transport constraints (in terms of order and reliability) that can be relaxed by MPEG video decoders, for improving video transport, are detailed. Then, we analyze the performance gain induced by this approach in terms of blocking times and recovered errors. We demonstrate that POC connections fill not only the conceptual gap between TCP and UDP but also provide real performance improvements for the transport of multimedia streams such MPEG video

    A comparison of automatic protocol generation techniques

    Due to the increasing complexity of applications and the availability of high speed networks classical protocols have become the main bottleneck in communication systems. Although tailored protocols are able to respond to the needs of a given application their development is expensive in terms of time and effort. An automatic protocogeneration environment is most desirable. Two approaches currently used are the stub compilation and the runtime adaptive techniques. We have studied these two approaches and the behaviour of the resulting tailored transport protocols. Relative performance comparisons and discussions about these two approaches are presented in this paper
