Pruning Algorithms for Pretropisms of Newton Polytopes
Pretropisms are candidates for the leading exponents of Puiseux series that
represent solutions of polynomial systems. To find pretropisms, we propose an
exact gift wrapping algorithm to prune the tree of edges of a tuple of Newton
polytopes. We prefer exact arithmetic not only because of the exact input and
the degrees of the output, but because of the often unpredictable growth of the
coordinates in the face normals, even for polytopes in generic position. We
provide experimental results with our preliminary implementation in Sage that
compare favorably with the pruning method that relies only on cone
intersections.Comment: exact, gift wrapping, Newton polytope, pretropism, tree pruning,

Recent advances in directional statistics
Mainstream statistical methodology is generally applicable to data observed
in Euclidean space. There are, however, numerous contexts of considerable
scientific interest in which the natural supports for the data under
consideration are Riemannian manifolds like the unit circle, torus, sphere and
their extensions. Typically, such data can be represented using one or more
directions, and directional statistics is the branch of statistics that deals
with their analysis. In this paper we provide a review of the many recent
developments in the field since the publication of Mardia and Jupp (1999),
still the most comprehensive text on directional statistics. Many of those
developments have been stimulated by interesting applications in fields as
diverse as astronomy, medicine, genetics, neurology, aeronautics, acoustics,
image analysis, text mining, environmetrics, and machine learning. We begin by
considering developments for the exploratory analysis of directional data
before progressing to distributional models, general approaches to inference,
hypothesis testing, regression, nonparametric curve estimation, methods for
dimension reduction, classification and clustering, and the modelling of time
series, spatial and spatio-temporal data. An overview of currently available
software for analysing directional data is also provided, and potential future
developments discussed.Comment: 61 page
Coupling and computation of electromagnetism and mechanics
Accurate coupling of electromagnetism and mechanics is of interest in computations of transducers such as piezoelectric, pyroelectric, electromagnetic sensors and actuators. Balance equations in mechanics as well as the MAXWELL equations for electromagnetism have been established in science. However, if the coupling between these governing equations are necessary, several difficulties arise. Herein we identify the challenges and propose possible solutions for computational analysis.TU Berlin, Open-Access-Mittel - 201
Sampling algebraic sets in local intrinsic coordinates
Numerical data structures for positive dimensional solution sets of
polynomial systems are sets of generic points cut out by random planes of
complimentary dimension. We may represent the linear spaces defined by those
planes either by explicit linear equations or in parametric form. These
descriptions are respectively called extrinsic and intrinsic representations.
While intrinsic representations lower the cost of the linear algebra
operations, we observe worse condition numbers. In this paper we describe the
local adaptation of intrinsic coordinates to improve the numerical conditioning
of sampling algebraic sets. Local intrinsic coordinates also lead to a better
stepsize control. We illustrate our results with Maple experiments and
computations with PHCpack on some benchmark polynomial systems.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, 2 algorithms, 2 table
