Comprehensive multisite efficiency equation for semiconductor test equipment
Multisite efficiency (MSE) determines the effectiveness of improving multisite testing throughput, which ultimately affects the cost of tests. As indicated by International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors 2.0 2015 Edition a decrease of the MSE relative to the test site increment has a negative effect on the testing throughput improvement. However, calculating the MSE accurately needs to consider all related variables such as test time, unit indexing time, tray exchange sequence time, testing yield, jam rate, and production capacity. The MSE equations identified from the previous literature are inaccurate and do not reflect the actual MSE situation. The Impact of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems on Firm Performance
Debate exists regarding the contribution of information technology to firm performance. Prior research has examined technology and firm performance in the aggregate. This study, however, focuses on a specific technology—enterprise resource planning (ERP)—and its impact on firm performance. Economic and industrial organization theories are used to predict how ERP technology should affect firm coordination and transaction costs. ERP is expected to (1) reduce costs by improving efficiencies through computerization and (2) enhance decision making by providing accurate and timely enterprise-wide information. These effects should be associated with improved firm performance. This issue is examined empirically using archival financial data of COMPUSTAT firms that have implemented ERP systems compared to control firm counterparts. Results indicate a significant increase in costs as a percentage of revenue but a decrease in the number of employees as a percentage of revenue the year after ERP implementation. However, control firms experience a greater reduction in employees. Results indicate a paradox where firms having fewer employees supporting more revenue simultaneously experience higher cost to revenue ratios after their ERP implementation
DNA Logic-A novel approach to semiconductor based genetics
In the coming years, genetic test results will be increasingly used as indicators that
influence medical decision-making. With chronic disease on the rise and the
continuing global spread of infectious disease, novel instruments able to detect
relevant mutations in a point-of-care setting are being developed to facilitate this
increased demand in personalized health care. However, diagnosis for such demand
often requires laboratory facilities and skilled personnel, meaning that diagnostic tests
are restricted by time and access. This thesis presents a novel configuration for Ion
sensitive Field Effect Transistors (ISFETs) to be used as a threshold detector during
nucleic acid base pairs match. ISFET-based inverters are used as reaction threshold
detectors to convey the chemical reaction level to a logic output once a threshold has
been reached. Using this method, novel DNA logic functions are derived for
nucleotides allowing local digital computations.
The thesis also presents business models that enable such technology to be utilised in
point of care applications, and experiment as results and business models given for an
HIV point of care example are proposed

A Region-based Business Ecosystem for Industrial Upgrading: Evidence from the Electronics Industry of Shenzhen
This dissertation explores the underlying mechanisms for the upgrading process of the electronics industry in Shenzhen. Industrial upgrading has been an international phenomenon since the globalisation of manufacturing in the late 1970s but to date no comprehensive framework has been proposed for the industrial upgrading in a region. In recent decades, the trend of manufacturing regionalisation and growing uncertainties associated with electronics products in the global market have driven regions that specialise in electronics manufacturing, such as the Chinese city of Shenzhen, to continuously adjust its industrial systems. Such adjustments are mainly based on the evolving business ecosystem they inhabit, which comprises region-specific resources that can be flexibly leveraged by players such as local firms and the government.
To elucidate the interactive mechanisms among actors that facilitate industrial upgrading within the regional business ecosystem, this research integrates and extends the existing literature on industrial upgrading from global and local perspectives and applies a business ecosystem framework to address the main research question and sub-questions:
How does a region act as a business ecosystem to facilitate the upgrading of a region- specific industry?
1. What is the evolutionary pattern of a regional resource pool?
2. How to understand the upgrading of a region-specific industry?
3. How does a regional resource pool interact with regional industrial systems to facilitate industrial upgrading?
In order to answer these questions, a qualitative study on the Shenzhen-based business ecosystem with two streams of embedded cases – electronics companies that have experienced upgrading in Shenzhen and milestone events in Shenzhen’s industrial development – was conducted following an inductive approach. After detailed individual and cross-case analyses, the research revealed three main findings. Firstly, the evolution of the regional resource pool is driven by both milestone events throughout the industrial development of the region and local firms’ feedback impacts. Secondly, the regional industrial upgrading is an iterative and dynamic process and should be interpreted by adding the regional dimension. At the regional level, there co-exist established industrial systems transformation and new industrial systems emergence throughout the upgrading journey of a region-specific industry. Thirdly, the underlying mechanisms for regional industrial upgrading are enabled by the region-based business ecosystem. A total of eight interactive mechanisms between the regional resource pool and regional industrial systems – four transformation impacts from the resource pool on the industrial system and four feedback impacts from the industrial system on the resource pool – result in an iterative and dynamic co-evolution model that defines the region-based business ecosystem. Theoretically, these findings fill the current scholarly neglect of the fact that a region as a whole can function as a business ecosystem to enhance long-term regional growth through industrial upgrading. In addition to these three main theoretical findings, this PhD research project has a number of practical implications. A mapping tool can be developed for firms or regional governments to use in decision making for industrial development. In addition to the tool development, firms and local government should collaborate following an ecosystem logic to enhance resource strengthening and creation, so as to sustain the regional industrial upgrading.
In summary, this dissertation contributes to industrial systems and business ecosystem literatures in its re-conceptualisation of region-based business ecosystems. By introducing the regional dimension into the research of industrial upgrading, the integrative region-based business ecosystem model enriches our understanding of the co-evolution between the industrial systems and resources in a developing region
Production planning mechanisms in demand-driven wood remanufacturing industry
L'objectif principal de cette thèse est d'étudier le problème de planification de la production dans le contexte d'une demande incertaine, d’un niveau de service variable et d’approvisionnements incontrôlables dans une usine de seconde transformation du bois. Les activités de planification et de contrôle de production sont des tâches intrinsèquement complexes et difficiles pour les entreprises de seconde transformation du bois. La complexité vient de certaines caractéristiques intrinsèques de cette industrie, comme la co-production, les procédés alternatifs divergents, les systèmes de production sur commande (make-to-order), des temps de setup variables et une offre incontrôlable. La première partie de cette thèse propose une plate-forme d'optimisation/simulation permettant de prendre des décisions concernant le choix d'une politique de planification de la production, pour traiter rapidement les demandes incertaines, tout en tenant compte des caractéristiques complexes de l'industrie de la seconde transformation du bois. À cet effet, une stratégie de re-planification périodique basée sur un horizon roulant est utilisée et validée par un modèle de simulation utilisant des données réelles provenant d'un partenaire industriel. Dans la deuxième partie de cette thèse, une méthode de gestion des stocks de sécurité dynamique est proposée afin de mieux gérer le niveau de service, qui est contraint par une capacité de production limitée et à la complexité de la gestion des temps de mise en course. Nous avons ainsi développé une approche de re-planification périodique à deux phases, dans laquelle des capacités non-utilisées (dans la première phase) sont attribuées (dans la seconde phase) afin de produire certains produits jugés importants, augmentant ainsi la capacité du système à atteindre le niveau de stock de sécurité. Enfin, dans la troisième partie de la thèse, nous étudions l’impact d’un approvisionnement incontrôlable sur la planification de la production. Différents scénarios d'approvisionnement servent à identifier les seuils critiques dans les variations de l’offre. Le cadre proposé permet aux gestionnaires de comprendre l'impact de politiques d'approvisionnement proposées pour faire face aux incertitudes. Les résultats obtenus à travers les études de cas considérés montrent que les nouvelles approches proposées dans cette thèse constituent des outils pratiques et efficaces pour la planification de production du bois.The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the production planning problem in the context of uncertain demand, variable service level, and uncontrollable supply in a wood remanufacturing mill. Production planning and control activities are complex and represent difficult tasks for wood remanufacturers. The complexity comes from inherent characteristics of the industry such as divergent co-production, alternative processes, make-to-order, short customer lead times, variable setup time, and uncontrollable supply. The first part of this thesis proposes an optimization/simulation platform to make decisions about the selection of a production planning policy to deal swiftly with uncertain demands, under the complex characteristics of the wood remanufacturing industry. For this purpose, a periodic re-planning strategy based on a rolling horizon was used and validated through a simulation model using real data from an industrial partner. The computational results highlighted the significance of using the re-planning model as a practical tool for production planning under unstable demands. In the second part, a dynamic safety stock method was proposed to better manage service level, which was threatened by issues related to limited production capacity and the complexity of setup time. We developed a two-phase periodic re-planning approach whereby idle capacities were allocated to produce more important products thus increasing the realization of safety stock level. Numerical results indicated that the solution of the two-phase method was superior to the initial method in terms of backorder level as well as inventory level. Finally, we studied the impact of uncontrollable supply on demand-driven wood remanufacturing production planning through an optimization and simulation framework. Different supply scenarios were used to identify the safety threshold of supply changes. The proposed framework provided managers with a novel advanced planning approach that allowed understanding the impact of supply policies to deal with uncertainties. In general, the wood products industry offers a rich environment for dealing with uncertainties for which the literature fails to provide efficient solutions. Regarding the results that were obtained through the case studies, we believe that approaches proposed in this thesis can be considered as novel and practical tools for wood remanufacturing production planning
Managing enterprise resource planning and multi-organisational enterprise governance:a new contingency framework for the enterprisation of operations
This research has been undertaken to determine how successful multi-organisational enterprise strategy is reliant on the correct type of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) information systems being used. However there appears to be a dearth of research as regards strategic alignment between ERP systems development and multi-organisational enterprise governance as guidelines and frameworks to assist practitioners in making decision for multi-organisational collaboration supported by different types of ERP systems are still missing from theoretical and empirical perspectives. This calls for this research which investigates ERP systems development and emerging practices in the management of multi-organisational enterprises (i.e. parts of companies working with parts of other companies to deliver complex product-service systems) and identify how different ERP systems fit into different multi-organisational enterprise structures, in order to achieve sustainable competitive success. An empirical inductive study was conducted using the Grounded Theory-based methodological approach based on successful manufacturing and service companies in the UK and China. This involved an initial pre-study literature review, data collection via 48 semi-structured interviews with 8 companies delivering complex products and services across organisational boundaries whilst adopting ERP systems to support their collaborative business strategies – 4 cases cover printing, semiconductor manufacturing, and parcel distribution industries in the UK and 4 cases cover crane manufacturing, concrete production, and banking industries in China in order to form a set of 29 tentative propositions that have been validated via a questionnaire receiving 116 responses from 16 companies. The research has resulted in the consolidation of the validated propositions into a novel concept referred to as the ‘Dynamic Enterprise Reference Grid for ERP’ (DERG-ERP) which draws from multiple theoretical perspectives. The core of the DERG-ERP concept is a contingency management framework which indicates that different multi-organisational enterprise paradigms and the supporting ERP information systems are not the result of different strategies, but are best considered part of a strategic continuum with the same overall business purpose of multi-organisational cooperation. At different times and circumstances in a partnership lifecycle firms may prefer particular multi-organisational enterprise structures and the use of different types of ERP systems to satisfy business requirements. Thus the DERG-ERP concept helps decision makers in selecting, managing and co-developing the most appropriate multi-organistional enterprise strategy and its corresponding ERP systems by drawing on core competence, expected competitiveness, and information systems strategic capabilities as the main contingency factors. Specifically, this research suggests that traditional ERP(I) systems are associated with Vertically Integrated Enterprise (VIE); whilst ERPIIsystems can be correlated to Extended Enterprise (EE) requirements and ERPIII systems can best support the operations of Virtual Enterprise (VE). The contribution of this thesis is threefold. Firstly, this work contributes to a gap in the extant literature about the best fit between ERP system types and multi-organisational enterprise structure types; and proposes a new contingency framework – the DERG-ERP, which can be used to explain how and why enterprise managers need to change and adapt their ERP information systems in response to changing business and operational requirements. Secondly, with respect to a priori theoretical models, the new DERG-ERP has furthered multi-organisational enterprise management thinking by incorporating information system strategy, rather than purely focusing on strategy, structural, and operational aspects of enterprise design and management. Simultaneously, the DERG-ERP makes theoretical contributions to the current IS Strategy Formulation Model which does not explicitly address multi-organisational enterprise governance. Thirdly, this research clarifies and emphasises the new concept and ideas of future ERP systems (referred to as ERPIII) that are inadequately covered in the extant literature. The novel DERG-ERP concept and its elements have also been applied to 8 empirical cases to serve as a practical guide for ERP vendors, information systems management, and operations managers hoping to grow and sustain their competitive advantage with respect to effective enterprise strategy, enterprise structures, and ERP systems use; referred to in this thesis as the “enterprisation of operations”
