    Identification of Nonlinear Systems Using Radial Basis Function Neural Network

    This paper uses the radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) for system identification of nonlinear systems. Five nonlinear systems are used to examine the activity of RBFNN in system modeling of nonlinear systems; the five nonlinear systems are dual tank system, single tank system, DC motor system, and two academic models. The feed forward method is considered in this work for modelling the non-linear dynamic models, where the KMeans clustering algorithm used in this paper to select the centers of radial basis function network, because it is reliable, offers fast convergence and can handle large data sets. The least mean square method is used to adjust the weights to the output layer, and Euclidean distance method used to measure the width of the Gaussian function

    A new class of wavelet networks for nonlinear system identification

    A new class of wavelet networks (WNs) is proposed for nonlinear system identification. In the new networks, the model structure for a high-dimensional system is chosen to be a superimposition of a number of functions with fewer variables. By expanding each function using truncated wavelet decompositions, the multivariate nonlinear networks can be converted into linear-in-the-parameter regressions, which can be solved using least-squares type methods. An efficient model term selection approach based upon a forward orthogonal least squares (OLS) algorithm and the error reduction ratio (ERR) is applied to solve the linear-in-the-parameters problem in the present study. The main advantage of the new WN is that it exploits the attractive features of multiscale wavelet decompositions and the capability of traditional neural networks. By adopting the analysis of variance (ANOVA) expansion, WNs can now handle nonlinear identification problems in high dimensions

    Software Aging Analysis of Web Server Using Neural Networks

    Software aging is a phenomenon that refers to progressive performance degradation or transient failures or even crashes in long running software systems such as web servers. It mainly occurs due to the deterioration of operating system resource, fragmentation and numerical error accumulation. A primitive method to fight against software aging is software rejuvenation. Software rejuvenation is a proactive fault management technique aimed at cleaning up the system internal state to prevent the occurrence of more severe crash failures in the future. It involves occasionally stopping the running software, cleaning its internal state and restarting it. An optimized schedule for performing the software rejuvenation has to be derived in advance because a long running application could not be put down now and then as it may lead to waste of cost. This paper proposes a method to derive an accurate and optimized schedule for rejuvenation of a web server (Apache) by using Radial Basis Function (RBF) based Feed Forward Neural Network, a variant of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). Aging indicators are obtained through experimental setup involving Apache web server and clients, which acts as input to the neural network model.     RECURSIVE LEARNING ALGORITHMS ON RBF NETWORKS FOR NONLINEAR SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION

    Science and technology development has the tendency of learning from nature where human also try to develop artificial intelligent by imitating biological neuron network which is popularly termed Artificial Neural Network (ANN). It represents an interconnection among neuron which consists of several adjustable parameters which are tuned using a set of learning examples to obtain the desired function represent the actual system. Radial Basis Function (RBF) networks, one of feed forward artificial neural network architecture, have recently been given much attention due to its good generalization ability. The RBF network is popular among scientist and engineer and used in a number of wide ranging signal and control applications which includes the area of system identification or estimation. The learning approach, a process which updated the parameters of RBF networks, will be the most important issue in neural computing research communities. The learning method will determine the performance’s capability of the networks for the system identification process which will be one of the key issues to be discussed in the thesis. This thesis proposes derivative free learning, using finite difference, methods for fixed size RBF network in comparison to gradient based learning for the application of system identification. The thesis also try to investigate the influence of initialization of RBF weights parameters on the overall learning performance using random method and advanced unsupervised learning, such as clustering techniques, as a comparison. By taking advantage of localized Gaussian basis function of RBF network, a decomposed version of learning method using finite difference (or derivative free) gradient estimate has been proposed in order to reduce memory requirement for the computation of the weight updates. The proposed training algorithms discussed in this thesis are derived for fixed size RBF network and being compared with Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) as the ELM technique just randomly assigned centers and width of the hidden neurons and update the output connected weights. The proposed methods are tested using well known nonlinear benchmark problems and also evaluated for system with irregular sample time or known as lost packets. The finite difference based gradient estimate, proposed in this thesis, provides a viable solution only for identifying a system with irregular sample time

    Variable neural networks for adaptive control of nonlinear systems

    This paper is concerned with the adaptive control of continuous-time nonlinear dynamical systems using neural networks. A novel neural network architecture, referred to as a variable neural network, is proposed and shown to be useful in approximating the unknown nonlinearities of dynamical systems. In the variable neural networks, the number of basis functions can be either increased or decreased with time, according to specified design strategies, so that the network will not overfit or underfit the data set. Based on the Gaussian radial basis function (GRBF) variable neural network, an adaptive control scheme is presented. The location of the centers and the determination of the widths of the GRBFs in the variable neural network are analyzed to make a compromise between orthogonality and smoothness. The weight-adaptive laws developed using the Lyapunov synthesis approach guarantee the stability of the overall control scheme, even in the presence of modeling error(s). The tracking errors converge to the required accuracy through the adaptive control algorithm derived by combining the variable neural network and Lyapunov synthesis techniques.     Some thoughts on neural network modelling of micro-abrasion-corrosion processes

    There is increasing interest in the interactions of microabrasion, involving small particles of less than 10 ÎĽm in size, with corrosion. This is because such interactions occur in many environments ranging from the offshore to health care sectors. In particular, micro-abrasion-corrosion can occur in oral processing, where the abrasive components of food interacting with the acidic environment, can lead to degradation of the surface dentine of teeth. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are computing mechanisms based on the biological brain. They are very effective in various areas such as modelling, classification and pattern recognition. They have been successfully applied in almost all areas of engineering and many practical industrial applications. Hence, in this paper an attempt has been made to model the data obtained in microabrasion-corrosion experiments on polymer/steel couple and a ceramic/lasercarb coating couple using ANN. A multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network is applied and the results obtained from modelling the tribocorrosion processes will be compared with those obtained from a relatively new class of neural networks namely resource allocation network
