    COMPENSATION THROUGH PREDICTION FOR ATMOSPHERIC TURBULENCE EFFECTS ON TARGET IMAGING AND HIGH ENERGY LASER BEAM

    Atmospheric turbulence significantly degrades the performance of High Energy Laser (HEL) beams. The three key undesirable effects are: (1) degraded target images used for target tracking; (2) inaccurate HEL pointing; and (3) reduction in HEL power during propagation to the target. The current approach for compensating for these turbulence effects uses adaptive optics to measure atmospheric turbulence and compensate the aberration in the optical beam. However, an adaptive optics system has limited performance in strong turbulence and an optical system makes the HEL system more complex. With improvements in Deep Learning algorithms and further development in Artificial Intelligence, we used Deep Learning and Convolutional Neural Networks to predict the atmospheric turbulence and compensate for its negative effects on laser beams. The predicted turbulence can be used for image correction and HEL beam correction using a deformable mirror to reduce turbulence effects during propagation.Military Expert 5, Republic of Singapore NavyApproved for public release.     Current and ongoing research programs related to various areas of aviation meteorology are presented. Literature searches of major abstract publications, were conducted. Research project managers of various government agencies involved in aviation meteorology research provided a list of current research project titles and managers, supporting organizations, performing organizations, the principal investigators, and the objectives. These are tabulated under the headings of advanced meteorological instruments, forecasting, icing, lightning and atmospheric electricity; fog, visibility, and ceilings; low level wind shear, storm hazards/severe storms, turbulence, winds, and ozone and other meteorological parameters. This information was reviewed and assembled into a bibliography providing a current readily useable source of information in the area of aviation meteorology

    Adaptive Airborne Separation to Enable UAM Autonomy in Mixed Airspace

    The excitement and promise generated by Urban Air Mobility (UAM) concepts have inspired both new entrants and large aerospace companies throughout the world to invest hundreds of millions in research and development of air vehicles, both piloted and unpiloted, to fulfill these dreams. The management and separation of all these new aircraft have received much less attention, however, and even though NASAs lead is advancing some promising concepts for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM), most operations today are limited to line of sight with the vehicle, airspace reservation and geofencing of individual flights. Various schemes have been proposed to control this new traffic, some modeled after conventional air traffic control and some proposing fully automatic management, either from a ground-based entity or carried out on board among the vehicles themselves. Previous work has examined vehicle-based traffic management in the very low altitude airspace within a metroplex called UTM airspace in which piloted traffic is rare. A management scheme was proposed in that work that takes advantage of the homogeneous nature of the traffic operating in UTM airspace. This paper expands that concept to include a traffic management plan usable at all altitudes desired for electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing urban and short-distance, inter-city transportation. The interactions with piloted aircraft operating under both visual and instrument flight rules are analyzed, and the role of Air Traffic Control services in the postulated mixed traffic environment is covered. Separation values that adapt to each type of traffic encounter are proposed, and the relationship between required airborne surveillance range and closure speed is given. Finally, realistic scenarios are presented illustrating how this concept can reliably handle the density and traffic mix that fully implemented and successful UAM operations would entail

    Numerical modeling and optimization of waterjet based surface decontamination

    The mission of this study is to investigate the high-pressure waterjet based surface decontamination. Our specific objective is to develop a practical procedure for selection of process conditions at given constraints and available knowledge. This investigation is expected to improve information processing in the course of material decontamination and assist in the implementation of the waterjet decontamination technology into practice. The development of a realistic procedure for processing of a chaotic and non-accurate information constitutes the main accomplishment of this study. The research involved acquisition of representative information about removal of brittle, elastic and viscous deposits. As a result an extended database representing jet based decoating has been compiled and feasibility of the damage free decontamination of various surfaces including highly sensitive ones is demonstrated. Artificial Intelligence techniques (Fuzzy Logic, Artificial Neural Networks, Genetic Computing) have been applied for processing of the acquired information and a realistic procedure of such an application has been developed and demonstrated. This procedure enables us to integrate available information about surface in question and existing numerical models. The developed procedure allows a user to incorporate both qualitative (linguistic) and quantitative (crisp) information into a process model and to predict operational conditions for treatment of an unknown surface using a readily detectable single experimental parameter that characterizes a deposit/substrata combination. The suggested technique is shown to perform reliably in the case of incomplete and chaotic information, where the traditional regression based methods fail. Numerical simulations of the two-phase flow inside a waterjet nozzle are conducted. Numerical solutions of the partial differential equations of the two-phase turbulent jet flow are obtained using FLUENT package. The numerical prediction of jet velocity profiles and the interface between the two phases (water - air) inside a nozzle are in good agreement with experimental data available in the literature. Thus the current problem setup and the results of simulations can be applied to improvement in the nozzle design. A realistic procedure for the design of the jet based surfaces decontamination developed, as a result of this study, is applied for optimization of the removal of the paint, rust, tar and rubber from the steel surface

    Air Traffic Controller Workload Level Prediction using Conformalized Dynamical Graph Learning

    Air traffic control (ATC) is a safety-critical service system that demands constant attention from ground air traffic controllers (ATCos) to maintain daily aviation operations. The workload of the ATCos can have negative effects on operational safety and airspace usage. To avoid overloading and ensure an acceptable workload level for the ATCos, it is important to predict the ATCos' workload accurately for mitigation actions. In this paper, we first perform a review of research on ATCo workload, mostly from the air traffic perspective. Then, we briefly introduce the setup of the human-in-the-loop (HITL) simulations with retired ATCos, where the air traffic data and workload labels are obtained. The simulations are conducted under three Phoenix approach scenarios while the human ATCos are requested to self-evaluate their workload ratings (i.e., low-1 to high-7). Preliminary data analysis is conducted. Next, we propose a graph-based deep-learning framework with conformal prediction to identify the ATCo workload levels. The number of aircraft under the controller's control varies both spatially and temporally, resulting in dynamically evolving graphs. The experiment results suggest that (a) besides the traffic density feature, the traffic conflict feature contributes to the workload prediction capabilities (i.e., minimum horizontal/vertical separation distance); (b) directly learning from the spatiotemporal graph layout of airspace with graph neural network can achieve higher prediction accuracy, compare to hand-crafted traffic complexity features; (c) conformal prediction is a valuable tool to further boost model prediction accuracy, resulting a range of predicted workload labels.     Heat Transfer Mechanism In Particle-Laden Turbulent Shearless Flows

    Particle-laden turbulent flows are one of the complex flow regimes involved in a wide range of environmental, industrial, biomedical and aeronautical applications. Recently the interest has included also the interaction between scalars and particles, and the complex scenario which arises from the interaction of particle finite inertia, temperature transport, and momentum and heat feedback of particles on the flow leads to a multi-scale and multi-physics phenomenon which is not yet fully understood. The present work aims to investigate the fluid-particle thermal interaction in turbulent mixing under one-way and two-way coupling regimes. A recent novel numerical framework has been used to investigate the impact of suspended sub-Kolmogorov inertial particles on heat transfer within the mixing layer which develops at the interface of two regions with different temperature in an isotropic turbulent flow. Temperature has been considered a passive scalar, advected by the solenoidal velocity field, and subject to the particle thermal feedback in the two-way regime. A self-similar stage always develops where all single-point statistics of the carrier fluid and the suspended particles collapse when properly re-scaled. We quantify the effect of particle inertial, parametrized through the Stokes and thermal Stokes numbers, on the heat transfer through the Nusselt number, defined as the ratio of the heat transfer to the thermal diffusion. A scale analysis will be presented. We show how the modulation of fluid temperature gradients due to the statistical alignments of the particle velocity and the local carrier flow temperature gradient field, impacts the overall heat transfer in the two-way coupling regime
