First impressions: A survey on vision-based apparent personality trait analysis

From the past few years, it also became an attractive research area in visual computing. From the computational point of view, by far speech and text have been the most considered cues of information for analyzing personality. However, recently there has been an increasing interest from the computer vision community in analyzing personality from visual data. Recent computer vision approaches are able to accurately analyze human faces, body postures and behaviors, and use these information to infer apparent personality traits. Because of the overwhelming research interest in this topic, and of the potential impact that this sort of methods could have in society, we present in this paper an up-to-date review of existing vision-based approaches for apparent personality trait recognition. We describe seminal and cutting edge works on the subject, discussing and comparing their distinctive features and limitations. Future venues of research in the field are identified and discussed. Furthermore, aspects on the subjectivity in data labeling/evaluation, as well as current datasets and challenges organized to push the research on the field are reviewed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Computational Sociolinguistics: A Survey
Language is a social phenomenon and variation is inherent to its social
nature. Recently, there has been a surge of interest within the computational
linguistics (CL) community in the social dimension of language. In this article
we present a survey of the emerging field of "Computational Sociolinguistics"
that reflects this increased interest. We aim to provide a comprehensive
overview of CL research on sociolinguistic themes, featuring topics such as the
relation between language and social identity, language use in social
interaction and multilingual communication. Moreover, we demonstrate the
potential for synergy between the research communities involved, by showing how
the large-scale data-driven methods that are widely used in CL can complement
existing sociolinguistic studies, and how sociolinguistics can inform and
challenge the methods and assumptions employed in CL studies. We hope to convey
the possible benefits of a closer collaboration between the two communities and

Language in Our Time: An Empirical Analysis of Hashtags
Hashtags in online social networks have gained tremendous popularity during
the past five years. The resulting large quantity of data has provided a new
lens into modern society. Previously, researchers mainly rely on data collected
from Twitter to study either a certain type of hashtags or a certain property
of hashtags. In this paper, we perform the first large-scale empirical analysis
of hashtags shared on Instagram, the major platform for hashtag-sharing. We
study hashtags from three different dimensions including the temporal-spatial
dimension, the semantic dimension, and the social dimension. Extensive
experiments performed on three large-scale datasets with more than 7 million
hashtags in total provide a series of interesting observations. First, we show
that the temporal patterns of hashtags can be categorized into four different
clusters, and people tend to share fewer hashtags at certain places and more
hashtags at others. Second, we observe that a non-negligible proportion of
hashtags exhibit large semantic displacement. We demonstrate hashtags that are
more uniformly shared among users, as quantified by the proposed hashtag
entropy, are less prone to semantic displacement. In the end, we propose a
bipartite graph embedding model to summarize users' hashtag profiles, and rely
on these profiles to perform friendship prediction. Evaluation results show
that our approach achieves an effective prediction with AUC (area under the ROC
curve) above 0.8 which demonstrates the strong social signals possessed in

Data-driven Computational Social Science: A Survey
Social science concerns issues on individuals, relationships, and the whole
society. The complexity of research topics in social science makes it the
amalgamation of multiple disciplines, such as economics, political science, and
sociology, etc. For centuries, scientists have conducted many studies to
understand the mechanisms of the society. However, due to the limitations of
traditional research methods, there exist many critical social issues to be
explored. To solve those issues, computational social science emerges due to
the rapid advancements of computation technologies and the profound studies on
social science. With the aids of the advanced research techniques, various
kinds of data from diverse areas can be acquired nowadays, and they can help us
look into social problems with a new eye. As a result, utilizing various data
to reveal issues derived from computational social science area has attracted
more and more attentions. In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, we
present a survey on data-driven computational social science for the first time
which primarily focuses on reviewing application domains involving human
dynamics. The state-of-the-art research on human dynamics is reviewed from
three aspects: individuals, relationships, and collectives. Specifically, the
research methodologies used to address research challenges in aforementioned
application domains are summarized. In addition, some important open challenges
with respect to both emerging research topics and research methods are

The Role of Gender in Social Network Organization
The digital traces we leave behind when engaging with the modern world offer
an interesting lens through which we study behavioral patterns as expression of
gender. Although gender differentiation has been observed in a number of
settings, the majority of studies focus on a single data stream in isolation.
Here we use a dataset of high resolution data collected using mobile phones, as
well as detailed questionnaires, to study gender differences in a large cohort.
We consider mobility behavior and individual personality traits among a group
of more than university students. We also investigate interactions among
them expressed via person-to-person contacts, interactions on online social
networks, and telecommunication. Thus, we are able to study the differences
between male and female behavior captured through a multitude of channels for a
single cohort. We find that while the two genders are similar in a number of
aspects, there are robust deviations that include multiple facets of social
interactions, suggesting the existence of inherent behavioral differences.
Finally, we quantify how aspects of an individual's characteristics and social
behavior reveals their gender by posing it as a classification problem. We ask:
How well can we distinguish between male and female study participants based on
behavior alone? Which behavioral features are most predictive
Discovering Organizational Correlations from Twitter
Organizational relationships are usually very complex in real life. It is
difficult or impossible to directly measure such correlations among different
organizations, because important information is usually not publicly available
(e.g., the correlations of terrorist organizations). Nowadays, an increasing
amount of organizational information can be posted online by individuals and
spread instantly through Twitter. Such information can be crucial for detecting
organizational correlations. In this paper, we study the problem of discovering
correlations among organizations from Twitter. Mining organizational
correlations is a very challenging task due to the following reasons: a) Data
in Twitter occurs as large volumes of mixed information. The most relevant
information about organizations is often buried. Thus, the organizational
correlations can be scattered in multiple places, represented by different
forms; b) Making use of information from Twitter collectively and judiciously
is difficult because of the multiple representations of organizational
correlations that are extracted. In order to address these issues, we propose
multi-CG (multiple Correlation Graphs based model), an unsupervised framework
that can learn a consensus of correlations among organizations based on
multiple representations extracted from Twitter, which is more accurate and
robust than correlations based on a single representation. Empirical study
shows that the consensus graph extracted from Twitter can capture the
