Issue Framing in Online Discussion Fora

In online discussion fora, speakers often make arguments for or against something, say birth control, by highlighting certain aspects of the topic. In social science, this is referred to as issue framing. In this paper, we introduce a new issue frame annotated corpus of online discussions. We explore to what extent models trained to detect issue frames in newswire and social media can be transferred to the domain of discussion fora, using a combination of multi-task and adversarial training, assuming only unlabeled training data in the target domain.Comment: To appear in NAACL-HLT 201

Neural Discourse Structure for Text Categorization

We show that discourse structure, as defined by Rhetorical Structure Theory and provided by an existing discourse parser, benefits text categorization. Our approach uses a recursive neural network and a newly proposed attention mechanism to compute a representation of the text that focuses on salient content, from the perspective of both RST and the task. Burn, boil & eat : an intersection analysis of stereotypes in the most influential films of all time

This research builds upon the work of Entman & Rojecki (2001) in examining the ways the most influential movies use racial stereotypes in media frames. The results of this study contribute to the rather limited mass media research and body of knowledge regarding the media content that attracts the largest and most enduring audiences in the new media landscape. As ten of the films that have generated the most revenue, the movies in this sample constitute a genre of movies that are also a prime feature of on-going publishing, cable, internet, digital gaming, DVD, and movie sequel franchises. If, as Entman & Rojecki contend, movie studios invest more resources into marketing and distributing films that adhere to a formula of using racial stereotypes, then the findings of this research documents the content of the formula. The sampled movie content is distinct from that found in the traditional literature on stereotypes because it captures not only derogatory themes, words, images, and actions of non-dominant racial groups, but also laudatory themes, words, images, and actions of both dominant and non-dominant racial groups. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, is the scrutiny of the relationships among these groups that is necessary to beginning to understand the relationship between movie stereotypes and historical ideologies

Assessing The Business Case For Asian-American Casting In Hollywood Films

The Asian-American Pacific Islander (AAPI) population has been subject to recent attention due to their relative underrepresentation in Hollywood films. Through use of secondary sources, spanning academic literature and box office receipt data, a preliminary relationship could be discerned between the presence of AAPI cast members and improved box office results. General academic literature points to an “ingroup” effect occurring when an individual views a film casted with actors of a similar background. The extent to which film studios can capitalize on this “ingroup” effect, either in casting or through external marketing efforts, will help improve the box office receipts for films that participate in diverse casting. Finally, there are a variety of alternative rationales for studios to adopt diverse casting measures for AAPIs beyond the immediate revenue gain in box office receipts, tied to the tastes and preferences of the AAPI cohort and the potential for international market expansion. Ultimately, more research is needed to quantitatively define the relationship between increased viewership and diverse casting, as well as more AAPI-casted films to empirically explore this relationship

HBO Series Girls and Insecure’s Depiction of Race and Gender

In this research study the identification and representation of race and gender were looked at in the primetime HBO television series Insecure and Girls. The characters that were analyzed in two episodes were the young black women of Insecure and in two episodes the young white women in Girls. The method for this study was conducted using content analysis to identify the following variables focusing on identity, racial stereotypes and names used to address one another. Additionally, variables to identify gender included emotional approaches to situations, stereotypes and gender role expectations. The comprehensive findings revealed through similarities and differences of the episodes containing similar plot lines, as well as the overall analysis of each show, gave insight on how race and gender is being presented. Consistently throughout each of the episodes in terms of gender representation, emotional approaches to situations was the variable with a fair amount of content found. Although anticipated prior to conducting research, gender role expectations were shown less often by the women in each series. Race identity was another variable chosen that also resulted as being less frequently identifiable. In terms of race and gender stereotypes that were looked at, gender stereotypes were more prominent within each of the episodes. The variable used to identify race in each episode, names used to address one another, were mentioned more throughout the episodes of Insecure than in Girls

Colorblind love and Black love on purpose: Black feminist thought, casting, and the invisibility/visibility of Black womanhood on television

2018 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.This thesis interrogates the representations of Black womanhood on television by investigating the production context and text of two contemporary television shows. Both case studies reveal the importance of quality on screen representations and the relationship between production practices and understandings of intersectionality, stereotypes, and cultural specificity. I argue Being Mary Jane's industrial discourse and text intentionally offer a complex image of a Black woman's life while the industrial context surrounding Rachel's journey on The Bachelorette undermines Black female visibility through a colorblind discourse that dismisses Rachel's position and experience as a Black woman. These case studies demonstrate how off screen discourses contribute to representation on screen and create narratives that can exclude or include cultural specificity and racial complexity. Such narratives resonate throughout popular and political discourses with the potential to empower marginalized voices or expose the mechanisms that strive to silence them and reify white supremacy
