Development of a novel time-of-flight laser rangefinder for opto-mechatronic applications
A Laser rangefinder is an opto-electric device used to determine the distance between two objects. There are many applications for laser rangefinders in industries such as unmanned vehicles, defence sectors, scientific exploration, and outdoor sporting activities. In this work a novel time-of-flight laser rangefinder was designed to deliver range information while meeting size weight and power constraints. The laser rangefinder consists of three main systems, optical, electrical, and mechanical. The optical system consists of collimating transmitting optics and a focusing mirror for receiving optics. The electrical system is comprised of a pulsing circuit providing a narrow pulse with high peak current, a receiving circuit for identifying the return signal, and an FPGA controller for triggering the pulse and calculating distance. The mechanical system is made up of the housing of the laser rangefinder which ensures concentricity and spacing of the optical system
Design, Construction, and Testing of Sequentially Flashing Led Array to Study Angular Camera Motion in Hand Held Camera Systems
This project deals with the construction of a device to determine the actual angular motion in a hand held camera system caused only by the holder. An array of LEDs (8x8) is flashed so that one LED flashes at a time in sequence. This sequence is photographed by a system suffering from motion effects and this is compared with the image of the array when no motion effects are present. The displacements of each blip with respect to time is used to determine the motion of the camera system
Analysis of partial-reflection data from the solar eclipse of 10 Jul. 1972
Partial-reflection data collected for the eclipse of July 10, 1972 as well as for July 9 and 11, 1972, are analyzed to determine eclipse effects on D-region electron densities. The partial-reflection experiment was set up to collect data using an on-line PDP-15 computer and DECtape storage. The electron-density profiles show good agreement with results from other eclipses. The partial-reflection programs were changed after the eclipse data collection to improve the operation of the partial-reflection system. These changes were mainly due to expanded computer hardware and have simplified the operations of the system considerably
The 30-cm ion thruster power processor
A power processor unit for powering and controlling the 30 cm Mercury Electron-Bombardment Ion Thruster was designed, fabricated, and tested. The unit uses a unique and highly efficient transistor bridge inverter power stage in its implementation. The system operated from a 200 to 400 V dc input power bus, provides 12 independently controllable and closely regulated dc power outputs, and has an overall power conditioning capacity of 3.5 kW. Protective circuitry was incorporated as an integral part of the design to assure failure-free operation during transient and steady-state load faults. The implemented unit demonstrated an electrical efficiency between 91.5 and 91.9 at its nominal rated load over the 200 to 400 V dc input bus range
