Finding Success in the Cauldron of Competition: The Effectiveness of Academic Support Programs

    Get PDF
This article provides an in-depth analysis of our comprehensive study of the Pace Academic Support Program. Section II of the article discusses the purpose and design of ASPs generally, and Pace Law School\u27s program specifically. Section III describes the research design, methodology, and procedures used for this study. Section IV evaluates and analyzes the findings, with an in-depth analysis of the impact each service yields to ASP students, as well as the statistical significance of such benefits. Section V evaluates the importance of background criteria and the impact that such variables have on ASP participants and non-participants. Section V also discusses whether any of these background variables allow some students to derive a greater benefit from the program than other students participating in the same service. Section VI elaborates on the benefits of participation in an ASP, while Section VII elaborates on the impact of background variables on the performance of students

The Influence of Demographic Characteristics, Cognitive and Non-Cognitive Attributes on the Effectiveness of the LADDERS Probation Intervention Program

Retention is an important measure for institutions of higher education thereby making improved academic success and increased retention of paramount concern to university administrators. This concern has resulted in a body of literature addressing retention and the development of retention programs. Few of these programs however, have been empirically evaluated for their effectiveness and repeatedly, the literature has cited the need for evaluation of retention and probation programs across demographic, cognitive and non-cognitive characteristics. The purpose of this research was to determine whether the LADDERS (Let Academic Difficulty Disappear to Energize and Retain Students) program developed by Old Dominion University is an effective model that can be used to improve academic achievement and retention rates of probationary undergraduate students. ANOVA, Factorial ANOVA and Logistic Regression were used to compare the academic achievement and retention of probationary students who attended the LADDERS program across their demographic characteristics and cognitive and non-cognitive attributes. The results of this study showed that participation in the LADDERS program leads to higher GPA and greater retention of students. Findings further suggest that participation in LADDERS may be especially effective for improving retention rates among minority male students

The predictive reliability of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as a predictor of academic success of international students at Belmont University, a small Baptist university, was examined. Data were collected and examined on 168 international students. They were profiled by gender, language background, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score, grade point average achieved, and major area of study. No significant correlation was found between TOEFL scores and academic achievement as measured by CPA. However, significant correlation was found between major field of study, TOEFL ranges, and gender in relationship to academic success. TOEFL scores were also correlated with GPA for each specific academic major. A higher correlation was found for the humanities (r = .26, p \u3c .05), and undecided students (r = .38, p \u3c .05), than for business (r = .08, p \u3c .05). A t-test showed that students with TOEFL scores below 500 attained significant lower grades (GPA means = 2.44) than students with scores above 500 (GPA means = 2.72). Closer examination of GPA means for subjects in the TOEFL score ranges above 500 indicate that the higher the TOEFL score range the higher the mean GPA

Using Mathematical Modeling for the Prediction of Success in Developmental Math.

This exploratory study was primarily designed to determine the possibility of developing a discriminant model to predict success in developmental mathematics. The sample included 402 students enrolled in a developmental math class at Northwestern State University, a small public school in North Louisiana, in the fall semester of 1996. Demographic, achievement and attitudinal variables were used in the development of the model. High school GPA, social enrichment scores from the College Student Inventory, and black were factors identified as significant in the model. Although limited in its predictive ability, the model does provide faculty and advisors with additional information to use in the development of intervention strategies

Self-Efficacy and Grade Point Average in Relationship to Academic Success in Baccalaureate Nursing Students

Academic success, defined as the completion of a nursing program and passing the National Council for Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), is the goal of all nursing programs. The identification of specific variables related to academic success could identify students at risk of failing early. The purpose of this research study was to explore the relationship of two variables related to academic success, self-efficacy and grade point averages (GPA), in accelerated and regular BSN students. The results of this study suggest that a statistically significant, positive relationship exists between prerequisite GP A and self-efficacy of BSN students. In addition, the results suggest that a statistically significant difference existed between the prerequisite GP A of the accelerated and the regular nursing students. The conclusion of this research suggests that the combination of self-efficacy and prerequisite grades provides one opportunity for early identification and intervention of at risk students
