Ultra-high-frequency piecewise-linear chaos using delayed feedback loops
We report on an ultra-high-frequency (> 1 GHz), piecewise-linear chaotic
system designed from low-cost, commercially available electronic components.
The system is composed of two electronic time-delayed feedback loops: A primary
analog loop with a variable gain that produces multi-mode oscillations centered
around 2 GHz and a secondary loop that switches the variable gain between two
different values by means of a digital-like signal. We demonstrate
experimentally and numerically that such an approach allows for the
simultaneous generation of analog and digital chaos, where the digital chaos
can be used to partition the system's attractor, forming the foundation for a
symbolic dynamics with potential applications in noise-resilient communications
and radar

The Growth and Decline of the Western Roman Empire: Quantifying the Dynamics of Army Size, Territory, and Coinage
We model the Western Roman Empire from 500 BCE to 500 CE, aiming to understand the interdependent dynamics of army size, conquered territory and the production and debasement of coins within the empire. The relationships are represented through feedback relationships and modelled mathematically via a dynamical system, specified as a set of ordinary differential equations. We analyze the stability of a subsystem and determine that it is neutrally stable. Based on this, we find that to prevent decline, the optimal policy was to stop debasement and reduce the army size and territory during the rule of Marcus Aurelius. Given the nature of the stability of the system and the kind of policies necessary to prevent decline, we argue that a high degree of centralized control was necessary, in line with basic tenets of structural-demographic theory. Robust sliding mode control for discrete stochastic systems with mixed time delays, randomly occurring uncertainties, and randomly occurring nonlinearities

The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 IEEEThis paper investigates the robust sliding mode control (SMC) problem for a class of uncertain nonlinear stochastic systems with mixed time delays. Both the sectorlike nonlinearities and the norm-bounded uncertainties enter into the system in random ways, and such randomly occurring uncertainties and randomly occurring nonlinearities obey certain mutually uncorrelated Bernoulli distributed white noise sequences. The mixed time delays consist of both the discrete and the distributed delays. The time-varying delays are allowed in state. By employing the idea of delay fractioning and constructing a new Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, sufficient conditions are established to ensure the stability of the system dynamics in the specified sliding surface by solving a certain semidefinite programming problem. A full-state feedback SMC law is designed to guarantee the reaching condition. Democratic Reinforcement: Learning via Self-Organization
The problem of learning in the absence of external intelligence is discussed
in the context of a simple model. The model consists of a set of randomly
connected, or layered integrate-and fire neurons. Inputs to and outputs from
the environment are connected randomly to subsets of neurons. The connections
between firing neurons are strengthened or weakened according to whether the
action is successful or not. The model departs from the traditional
gradient-descent based approaches to learning by operating at a highly
susceptible ``critical'' state, with low activity and sparse connections
between firing neurons. Quantitative studies on the performance of our model in
a simple association task show that by tuning our system close to this critical

A Unified Framework for the Study of Anti-Windup Designs
We present a unified framework for the study of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems subject to control input nonlinearities. The framework is based on the following two-step design paradigm: "Design the linear controller ignoring control input nonlinearities and then add anti-windup bumpless transfer (AWBT) compensation to minimize the adverse eflects of any control input nonlinearities on closed loop performance". The resulting AWBT compensation is applicable to multivariable controllers of arbitrary structure and order. All known LTI anti-windup and/or bumpless transfer compensation schemes are shown to be special cases of this framework. It is shown how this framework can handle standard issues such as the analysis of stability and performance with or without uncertainties in the plant model. The actual analysis of stability and performance, and robustness issues are problems in their own right and hence not detailed here. The main result is the unification of existing schemes for AWBT compensation under a general framework
