    The near wall effect of synthetic jets in a boundary layer

All rights reserved.An experimental investigation to analyse the qualitative near wall effect of synthetic jets in a laminar boundary layer has been undertaken for the purpose of identifying the types of vortical structures likely to have delayed separation on a 2D circular cylinder model described in this paper. In the first instance, dye visualisation of the synthetic jet was facilitated in conjunction with a stereoscopic imaging system to provide a unique quasi three-dimensional identification of the vortical structures. Secondly, the impact of synthetic jet structures along the wall was analysed using a thermochromic liquid crystal-based convective heat transfer sensing system in which, liquid crystals change colour in response to the thermal footprints of a passing flow structure. Of the different vortical structures produced as a result of varying actuator operating and freestream conditions, the footprints of hairpin vortices and stretched vortex rings revealed a marked similarity with the oil flow pattern of a vortex pair interacting with the separation line on the cylinder hence suggesting that either of these structures was responsible in delaying separation. Conditions were established for the formation of the different synthetic jet structures in non-dimensional parameter space

    Secondary Injection of Gases into a Supersonic Flow

    The flow field around the injection port for secondary injection of a gas normal to a supersonic stream has been studied in a series of wind-tunnel experiments. The experiments were conducted at freestream Mach numbers of 1.38 to 4.54. Gaseous nitrogen, argon, and helium were used as injectants. New information concerning pressure fields, concentration fields, and shock shapes was obtained. A scale parameter has been calculated, based on a simple, inviscid model of the flow field. This scale parameter gives a good general correlation of the data. Use of this scale parameter allows prediction of a simple scaling law for the side forces generated by secondary injection. This side-force scaling law is in approximate agreement with existing rocket motor test results

    The effects of Mach number and Reynolds number on the experimental surface pressure distributions and transition patterns for a large chord, swept supercritical airfoil incorporating an active Laminar Flow Control suction system with spanwise slots are presented. The experiment was conducted in the Langley 8 foot Transonic Pressure Tunnel. Also included is a discussion of the influence of model/tunnel liner interactions on the airfoil pressure distribution. Mach number was varied from 0.40 to 0.82 at two chord Reynolds numbers, 10 and 20 x 1,000,000, and Reynolds number was varied from 10 to 20 x 1,000,000 at the design Mach number

    Particle image velocimetry measurements of the interaction of synthetic jets with a zero-pressure gradient laminar boundary layer

    Copyright @ 2010 American Institute of PhysicsAn experimental investigation of the interaction between a synthetic jet actuator and a zero-pressure gradient laminar boundary layer is reported. The aim of this study is to quantify the impact of synthetic jet vortical structures; namely, hairpin vortices, stretched vortex rings and tilted vortex rings on a boundary layer, and to assess their relative potential for flow separation control. Streamwise particle image velocimetry was employed in a water flume (free stream boundary layer thickness Reynolds number of 500 and boundary layer thickness-to-jet orifice diameter ratio of 4) to obtain phase- and time-averaged boundary layer profile information of the impact of synthetic jets near the wall. The potential for flow control was assessed by analyzing near wall fluid mixing, realized by the measure of increase in wall shear stress produced by a passing vortex. Hairpin vortices (produced at a jet-to-free stream velocity ratio, VR=0.32 and dimensionless stroke length, L=1.6) and stretched vortex rings (VR=0.27; L=2.7) exhibit characteristics akin to a streamwise vortex pair with a common upwash. Conversely, tilted vortex rings (VR=0.54; L=2.7) induce a streamwise vortex pair in the near wall region with a common downwash. Wall shear stress measurements show that synthetic jets composed of stretched vortex rings offer the best combination of near wall fluid mixing, persistency, and low rms fluctuations for potential applications of flow separation control.Financial support from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC Grant No. AF566NEZ) was used for this work

    Modeling and simulation of inertial drop break-up in a turbulent pipe flow downstream of a restriction.

    This work deals with the modeling of drop break-up in an inhomogeneous turbulent flow that develops downstream of a concentric restriction in a pipe. The proposed approach consists in coupling Euler–Lagrange simulations of the drop motion to an interface deformation model. First the turbulent flow downstream of the restriction is solved by means of direct numerical simulation. Single drop trajectories are then calculated from the instantaneous force balance acting on the drop within the turbulent field (one-way coupling). Concurrently, the interface deformation is computed assuming the drop to behave as a Rayleigh–Lamb type oscillator forced by the turbulent stress along its trajectory. Criterion for break-up is based upon a critical value of drop eformation. This model has been tested against experimental data. The flow conditions and fluids properties have been chosen to match those experimental investigations. Both turbulent flow statistics and break-up probability calculations are in good agreement with experimental data, strengthening the relevance of this approach for modeling break-up in complex unsteady flow

    Preliminary Results from an Experimental Assessment of a Natural Laminar Flow Design Method

    A 5.2% scale semispan model of the new Common Research Model with Natural Laminar Flow (CRM-NLF) was tested in the National Transonic Facility (NTF) at the NASA Langley Research Center. The model was tested at transonic cruise flight conditions with Reynolds numbers based on mean aerodynamic chord ranging from 10 to 30 million. The goal of the test was to experimentally validate a new design method, referred to as Crossflow Attenuated NLF (CATNLF), which shapes airfoils to have pressure distributions that delay transition on wings with high sweep and Reynolds numbers. Additionally, the test aimed to characterize the NTF laminar flow testing capabilities, as well as establish best practices for laminar flow wind tunnel testing. Preliminary results regarding the first goal of validating the new design method are presented in this paper. Experimental data analyzed in this assessment include surface pressure data and transition images. The surface pressure data acquired during the test agree well with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results. Transition images at a variety of Reynolds numbers and angles of attack are presented and compared to computational transition predictions. The experimental data are used to assess transition due to a turbulent attachment line, as well as crossflow and Tollmien-Schlichting modal instabilities. Preliminary results suggest the CATNLF design method is successful at delaying transition on wings with high sweep.     Surface flow visualization of separated flows on the forebody of an F-18 aircraft and wind-tunnel model

    A method of in-flight surface flow visualization similar to wind-tunnel-model oil flows is described for cases where photo-chase planes or onboard photography are not practical. This method, used on an F-18 aircraft in flight at high angles of attack, clearly showed surface flow streamlines in the fuselage forebody. Vortex separation and reattachment lines were identified with this method and documented using postflight photography. Surface flow angles measured at the 90 and 270 degrees meridians show excellent agreement with the wind tunnel data for a pointed tangent ogive with an aspect ratio of 3.5. The separation and reattachment line locations were qualitatively similar to the F-18 wind-tunnel-model oil flows but neither the laminar separation bubble nor the boundary-layer transition on the wind tunnel model were evident in the flight surface flows. The separation and reattachment line locations were in fair agreement with the wind tunnel data for the 3.5 ogive. The elliptical forebody shape of the F-18 caused the primary separation lines to move toward the leeward meridian. Little effect of angle of attack on the separation locations was noted for the range reported

    Turbulent Vortex Flow Responses at the AB Interface in Rotating Superfluid 3He-B

    In a rotating two-phase sample of 3He-B and magnetic-field stabilized 3He-A the large difference in mutual friction dissipation at 0.20 Tc gives rise to unusual vortex flow responses. We use noninvasive NMR techniques to monitor spin down and spin up of the B-phase superfluid component to a sudden change in the rotation velocity. Compared to measurements at low field with no A-phase, where these responses are laminar in cylindrically symmetric flow, spin down with vortices extending across the AB interface is found to be faster, indicating enhanced dissipation from turbulence. Spin up in turn is slower, owing to rapid annihilation of remanent vortices before the rotation increase. As confirmed by both our NMR signal analysis and vortex filament calculations, these observations are explained by the additional force acting on the B-phase vortex ends at the AB interface.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
