    Scheduling for next generation WLANs: filling the gap between offered and observed data rates

    In wireless networks, opportunistic scheduling is used to increase system throughput by exploiting multi-user diversity. Although recent advances have increased physical layer data rates supported in wireless local area networks (WLANs), actual throughput realized are significantly lower due to overhead. Accordingly, the frame aggregation concept is used in next generation WLANs to improve efficiency. However, with frame aggregation, traditional opportunistic schemes are no longer optimal. In this paper, we propose schedulers that take queue and channel conditions into account jointly, to maximize throughput observed at the users for next generation WLANs. We also extend this work to design two schedulers that perform block scheduling for maximizing network throughput over multiple transmission sequences. For these schedulers, which make decisions over long time durations, we model the system using queueing theory and determine users' temporal access proportions according to this model. Through detailed simulations, we show that all our proposed algorithms offer significant throughput improvement, better fairness, and much lower delay compared with traditional opportunistic schedulers, facilitating the practical use of the evolving standard for next generation wireless networks

    Scheduling Policies in Time and Frequency Domains for LTE Downlink Channel: A Performance Comparison

    A key feature of the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) system is that the packet scheduler can make use of the channel quality information (CQI), which is periodically reported by user equipment either in an aggregate form for the whole downlink channel or distinguished for each available subchannel. This mechanism allows for wide discretion in resource allocation, thus promoting the flourishing of several scheduling algorithms, with different purposes. It is therefore of great interest to compare the performance of such algorithms under different scenarios. Here, we carry out a thorough performance analysis of different scheduling algorithms for saturated User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) traffic sources, as well as consider both the time- and frequency-domain versions of the schedulers and for both flat and frequency-selective channels. The analysis makes it possible to appreciate the difference among the scheduling algorithms and to assess the performance gain, in terms of cell capacity, users' fairness, and packet service time, obtained by exploiting the richer, but heavier, information carried by subchannel CQI. An important part of this analysis is a throughput guarantee scheduler, which we propose in this paper. The analysis reveals that the proposed scheduler provides a good tradeoff between cell capacity and fairness both for TCP and UDP traffic sources

    Delay-Prioritized Scheduling (DPS) for real time traffic in 3GPP LTE system

    Given that the co-existence of multimedia applications will be a norm in the future wireless systems, their quality of service (QoS) requirements need to be guaranteed. This has imposed new challenges in the design of packet scheduling algorithms in these systems. To address those challenges, a new packet scheduling algorithm for real time (RT) traffic in downlink third generation partnership project long term evolution (3GPP LTE) system is proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm utilizes each user's packet delay information and its instantaneous downlink channel conditions when making scheduling decisions. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms opportunistic scheduling and maximum-largest weighted delay first algorithms by maximizing system throughput and satisfying the QoS requirements of the RT traffic. ©2010 IEEE

    Performance of Well Known Packet Scheduling Algorithms in the Downlink 3GPP LTE System

    This paper investigates the performance of well known packet scheduling algorithms developed for single carrier wireless systems from a real time video streaming perspective. The performance evaluation is conducted using the downlink third generation partnership project long term evolution (3GPP LTE) system as the simulation platform. This paper contributes to the identification of a suitable packet scheduling algorithm for use in the downlink 3GPP LTE system supporting video streaming services. Simulation results show that, in the downlink 3GPP LTE system supporting video streaming services, maximum-largest weighted delay first (M-LWDF) algorithm outperforms other packet scheduling algorithms by providing a higher system throughput, supporting a higher number of users and guaranteeing fairness at a satisfactory level

    WIMAX Basics from PHY Layer to Scheduling and Multicasting Approaches

    WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is an emerging broadband wireless technology for providing Last mile solutions for supporting higher bandwidth and multiple service classes with various quality of service requirement. The unique architecture of the WiMAX MAC and PHY layers that uses OFDMA to allocate multiple channels with different modulation schema and multiple time slots for each channel allows better adaptation of heterogeneous user’s requirements. The main architecture in WiMAX uses PMP (Point to Multipoint), Mesh mode or the new MMR (Mobile Multi hop Mode) deployments where scheduling and multicasting have different approaches. In PMP SS (Subscriber Station) connects directly to BS (Base Station) in a single hop route so channel conditions adaptations and supporting QoS for classes of services is the key points in scheduling, admission control or multicasting, while in Mesh networks SS connects to other SS Stations or to the BS in a multi hop routes, the MMR mode extends the PMP mode in which the SS connects to either a relay station (RS) or to Bs. Both MMR and Mesh uses centralized or distributed scheduling with multicasting schemas based on scheduling trees for routing.     An Enhanced Feedback-Base Downlink Packet Scheduling Algorithm for Mobile TV in WIMAX Networks

    With high speed access network technology like WIMAX, there is the need for efficient management of radio resources where the throughput and Qos requirements for Multicasting Broadcasting Services (MBS) for example TV are to be met. An enhanced feedback-base downlink Packet scheduling algorithm that can be used in IEEE 802.16d/e networks for mobile TV “one way traffic”(MBS) is needed to support many users utilizing multiuser diversity of the broadband of WIMAX systems where a group of users(good/worst channels) share allocated resources (bandwidth). This paper proposes a WIMAX framework feedback-base (like a channel-awareness) downlink packet scheduling algorithm for Mobile TV traffics in IEEE806.16, in which network Physical Timing Slots (PSs) resource blocks are allocated in a dynamic way to mobile TV subscribers based on the Channel State information (CSI) feedback, and then considering users with worst channels with the aim of improving system throughput while system coverage is being guaranteed. The algorithm was examined by changing the PSs bandwidth allocation of the users and different number of users of a cell. Simulation results show our proposed algorithm performed better than other algorithms (blind algorithms) in terms of improvement in system throughput performance.
