    Using Variable Dwell Time to Accelerate Gaze-Based Web Browsing with Two-Step Selection

    In order to avoid the "Midas Touch" problem, gaze-based interfaces for selection often introduce a dwell time: a fixed amount of time the user must fixate upon an object before it is selected. Past interfaces have used a uniform dwell time across all objects. Here, we propose a gaze-based browser using a two-step selection policy with variable dwell time. In the first step, a command, e.g. "back" or "select", is chosen from a menu using a dwell time that is constant across the different commands. In the second step, if the "select" command is chosen, the user selects a hyperlink using a dwell time that varies between different hyperlinks. We assign shorter dwell times to more likely hyperlinks and longer dwell times to less likely hyperlinks. In order to infer the likelihood each hyperlink will be selected, we have developed a probabilistic model of natural gaze behavior while surfing the web. We have evaluated a number of heuristic and probabilistic methods for varying the dwell times using both simulation and experiment. Our results demonstrate that varying dwell time improves the user experience in comparison with fixed dwell time, resulting in fewer errors and increased speed. While all of the methods for varying dwell time resulted in improved performance, the probabilistic models yielded much greater gains than the simple heuristics. The best performing model reduces error rate by 50% compared to 100ms uniform dwell time while maintaining a similar response time.     Implicit relevance feedback from electroencephalography and eye tracking in image search

    Objective. Methods from brain–computer interfacing (BCI) open a direct access to the mental processes of computer users, which offers particular benefits in comparison to standard methods for inferring user-related information. The signals can be recorded unobtrusively in the background, which circumvents the time-consuming and distracting need for the users to give explicit feedback to questions concerning the individual interest. The obtained implicit information makes it possible to create dynamic user interest profiles in real-time, that can be taken into account by novel types of adaptive, personalised software. In the present study, the potential of implicit relevance feedback from electroencephalography (EEG) and eye tracking was explored with a demonstrator application that simulated an image search engine. Approach. The participants of the study queried for ambiguous search terms, having in mind one of the two possible interpretations of the respective term. Subsequently, they viewed different images arranged in a grid that were related to the query. The ambiguity of the underspecified search term was resolved with implicit information present in the recorded signals. For this purpose, feature vectors were extracted from the signals and used by multivariate classifiers that estimated the intended interpretation of the ambiguous query. Main result. The intended interpretation was inferred correctly from a combination of EEG and eye tracking signals in 86% of the cases on average. Information provided by the two measurement modalities turned out to be complementary. Significance. It was demonstrated that BCI methods can extract implicit user-related information in a setting of human-computer interaction.     Accuracy of Bilingual Chinese-speakers using search systems

    Internet users have substantial trust in search engine’s ability to rank the re-sults by the relevance to the query. This paper is seeking to understand how three factors affect the accuracy for native bilingual Chinese-speaking inter-net users. The factors are proficiency of English, the position of relevant in-formation on search engine result page (SERP) and system language. Sub-jects in this research interacted with simulated search engines and they were asked to identify the best results on SERP. The results show that the system language or English ability alone do not affect subjects’ performance, only if those two factors work together effect on subjects’ performance on finding results on SERP. Rank basis exists in bilingual Chinese-speakers and they tent to click on the results on higher locations. Target location in different system language only matters in the group of subjects within average Eng-lish ability, not in the group of low or high English ability subjects. But the accuracy performances are reversed in low English ability compare to high English ability

    Decision-making in information seeking on texts: an eye-fixation-related potentials investigation

    Reading on a web page is known to be not linear and people need to make fast decisions about whether they have to stop or not reading. In such context, reading, and decision-making processes are intertwined and this experiment attempts to separate them through electrophysiological patterns provided by the Eye-Fixation-Related Potentials technique (EFRPs). We conducted an experiment in which EFRPs were recorded while participants read blocks of text that were semantically highly related, moderately related, and unrelated to a given goal. Participants had to decide as fast as possible whether the text was related or not to the semantic goal given at a prior stage. Decision making (stopping information search) may occur when the paragraph is highly related to the goal (positive decision) or when it is unrelated to the goal (negative decision). EFRPs were analyzed on and around typical eye fixations: either on words belonging to the goal (target), subjected to a high rate of positive decisions, or on low frequency unrelated words (incongruent), subjected to a high rate of negative decisions. In both cases, we found EFRPs specific patterns (amplitude peaking between 51 to 120 ms after fixation onset) spreading out on the next words following the goal word and the second fixation after an incongruent word, in parietal and occipital areas. We interpreted these results as delayed late components (P3b and N400), reflecting the decision to stop information searching. Indeed, we show a clear spill-over effect showing that the effect on word N spread out on word N + 1 and N + 2
