An Efficient Signaling for Multi-mode Transmission in Multi-user MIMO
In this paper the downlink of a multi-user MIMO (MUMIMO)
system with multi-mode transmission is considered.
We propose a low-complexity algorithm for selecting users
and the corresponding number of data streams to each user,
denoted as user transmission mode (UTM). The selection
is only based on the average received signal-to-noise ratio
(SNR) from the base station (BS) for each user. This reduces
the overall amount of feedback for scheduling, as opposed
to techniques that assume perfect instantaneous channel
state information (CSI) from all users. Analytical average
throughput approximations are derived for each user at different UTMs. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides performance close to dirty paper coding (DPC) with considerably reduced feedback
An antenna switching based NOMA scheme for IEEE 802.15.4 concurrent transmission
This paper introduces a Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) scheme to support concurrent transmission of multiple IEEE 802.15.4 packets. Unlike collision avoidance Multiple Access Control (MAC), concurrent transmission supports Concurrent-MAC (C-MAC) where packet collision is allowed. The communication latency can be reduced by C-MAC because a user can transmit immediately without waiting for the completion of other users’ transmission. The big challenge of concurrent transmission is that error free demodulation of multiple collided packets hardly can be achieved due to severe Multiple Access Interference (MAI). To improve the demodulation performance with MAI presented, we introduce an architecture with multiple switching antennas sharing a single analog transceiver to capture spatial character of different users. Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) algorithm is designed to separate collided packets by utilizing the spatial character. Simulation shows that at least five users can transmit concurrently to the SIC receiver equipped with eight antennas without sacrificing Packet Error Rate
Separation Framework: An Enabler for Cooperative and D2D Communication for Future 5G Networks
Soaring capacity and coverage demands dictate that future cellular networks
need to soon migrate towards ultra-dense networks. However, network
densification comes with a host of challenges that include compromised energy
efficiency, complex interference management, cumbersome mobility management,
burdensome signaling overheads and higher backhaul costs. Interestingly, most
of the problems, that beleaguer network densification, stem from legacy
networks' one common feature i.e., tight coupling between the control and data
planes regardless of their degree of heterogeneity and cell density.
Consequently, in wake of 5G, control and data planes separation architecture
(SARC) has recently been conceived as a promising paradigm that has potential
to address most of aforementioned challenges. In this article, we review
various proposals that have been presented in literature so far to enable SARC.
More specifically, we analyze how and to what degree various SARC proposals
address the four main challenges in network densification namely: energy
efficiency, system level capacity maximization, interference management and
mobility management. We then focus on two salient features of future cellular
networks that have not yet been adapted in legacy networks at wide scale and
thus remain a hallmark of 5G, i.e., coordinated multipoint (CoMP), and
device-to-device (D2D) communications. After providing necessary background on
CoMP and D2D, we analyze how SARC can particularly act as a major enabler for
CoMP and D2D in context of 5G. This article thus serves as both a tutorial as
well as an up to date survey on SARC, CoMP and D2D. Most importantly, the
article provides an extensive outlook of challenges and opportunities that lie
at the crossroads of these three mutually entangled emerging technologies.Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures, IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials 201
Adaptive Multicell 3D Beamforming in Multi-Antenna Cellular Networks
We consider a cellular network with multi-antenna base stations (BSs) and
single-antenna users, multicell cooperation, imperfect channel state
information, and directional antennas each with a vertically adjustable beam.
We investigate the impact of the elevation angle of the BS antenna pattern,
denoted as tilt, on the performance of the considered network when employing
either a conventional single-cell transmission or a fully cooperative multicell
transmission. Using the results of this investigation, we propose a novel
hybrid multicell cooperation technique in which the intercell interference is
controlled via either cooperative beamforming in the horizontal plane or
coordinated beamfroming in the vertical plane of the wireless channel, denoted
as adaptive multicell 3D beamforming. The main idea is to divide the coverage
area into two disjoint vertical regions and adapt the multicell cooperation
strategy at the BSs when serving each region. A fair scheduler is used to share
the time-slots between the vertical regions. It is shown that the proposed
technique can achieve performance comparable to that of a fully cooperative
transmission but with a significantly lower complexity and signaling
requirements. To make the performance analysis computationally efficient,
analytical expressions for the user ergodic rates under different beamforming
strategies are also derived.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Transaction on Vehicular Technolog
An Energy Efficient Semi-static Power Control and Link Adaptation Scheme in UMTS HSDPA
High speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) has been successfully applied in
commercial systems and improves user experience significantly. However, it
incurs substantial energy consumption. In this paper, we address this issue by
proposing a novel energy efficient semi-static power control and link
adaptation scheme in HSDPA. Through estimating the EE under different
modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) and corresponding transmit power, the
proposed scheme can determine the most energy efficient MCS level and transmit
power at the Node B. And then the Node B configure the optimal MCS level and
transmit power. In order to decrease the signaling overhead caused by the
configuration, a dual trigger mechanism is employed. After that, we extend the
proposed scheme to the multiple input multiple output (MIMO) scenarios.
Simulation results confirm the significant EE improvement of our proposed
scheme. Finally, we give a discussion on the potential EE gain and challenge of
the energy efficient mode switching between single input multiple output (SIMO)
and MIMO configuration in HSDPA.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, accepted in EURASIP Journal on Wireless

Beamspace Aware Adaptive Channel Estimation for Single-Carrier Time-varying Massive MIMO Channels
In this paper, the problem of sequential beam construction and adaptive
channel estimation based on reduced rank (RR) Kalman filtering for
frequency-selective massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems
employing single-carrier (SC) in time division duplex (TDD) mode are
considered. In two-stage beamforming, a new algorithm for statistical
pre-beamformer design is proposed for spatially correlated time-varying
wideband MIMO channels under the assumption that the channel is a stationary
Gauss-Markov random process. The proposed algorithm yields a nearly optimal
pre-beamformer whose beam pattern is designed sequentially with low complexity
by taking the user-grouping into account, and exploiting the properties of
Kalman filtering and associated prediction error covariance matrices. The
resulting design, based on the second order statistical properties of the
channel, generates beamspace on which the RR Kalman estimator can be realized
as accurately as possible. It is observed that the adaptive channel estimation
technique together with the proposed sequential beamspace construction shows
remarkable robustness to the pilot interference. This comes with significant
reduction in both pilot overhead and dimension of the pre-beamformer lowering
both hardware complexity and power consumption.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted by IEEE ICC 2017 Wireless Communications
