Bin Packing and Related Problems: General Arc-flow Formulation with Graph Compression
We present an exact method, based on an arc-flow formulation with side
constraints, for solving bin packing and cutting stock problems --- including
multi-constraint variants --- by simply representing all the patterns in a very
compact graph. Our method includes a graph compression algorithm that usually
reduces the size of the underlying graph substantially without weakening the
model. As opposed to our method, which provides strong models, conventional
models are usually highly symmetric and provide very weak lower bounds.
Our formulation is equivalent to Gilmore and Gomory's, thus providing a very
strong linear relaxation. However, instead of using column-generation in an
iterative process, the method constructs a graph, where paths from the source
to the target node represent every valid packing pattern.
The same method, without any problem-specific parameterization, was used to
solve a large variety of instances from several different cutting and packing
problems. In this paper, we deal with vector packing, graph coloring, bin
packing, cutting stock, cardinality constrained bin packing, cutting stock with
cutting knife limitation, cutting stock with binary patterns, bin packing with
conflicts, and cutting stock with binary patterns and forbidden pairs. We
report computational results obtained with many benchmark test data sets, all
of them showing a large advantage of this formulation with respect to the
traditional ones
Facility layout problem: Bibliometric and benchmarking analysis
Facility layout problem is related to the location of departments in a facility area, with the aim of determining the most effective configuration. Researches based on different approaches have been published in the last six decades and, to prove the effectiveness of the results obtained, several instances have been developed. This paper presents a general overview on the extant literature on facility layout problems in order to identify the main research trends and propose future research questions. Firstly, in order to give the reader an overview of the literature, a bibliometric analysis is presented. Then, a clusterization of the papers referred to the main instances reported in literature was carried out in order to create a database that can be a useful tool in the benchmarking procedure for researchers that would approach this kind of problems
HIPAD - A Hybrid Interior-Point Alternating Direction algorithm for knowledge-based SVM and feature selection
We consider classification tasks in the regime of scarce labeled training
data in high dimensional feature space, where specific expert knowledge is also
available. We propose a new hybrid optimization algorithm that solves the
elastic-net support vector machine (SVM) through an alternating direction
method of multipliers in the first phase, followed by an interior-point method
for the classical SVM in the second phase. Both SVM formulations are adapted to
knowledge incorporation. Our proposed algorithm addresses the challenges of
automatic feature selection, high optimization accuracy, and algorithmic
flexibility for taking advantage of prior knowledge. We demonstrate the
effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithm and compare it with existing

A goal programming methodology for multiobjective optimization of distributed energy hubs operation
This paper addresses the problem of optimal energy flow management in multicarrier energy networks
in the presence of interconnected energy hubs. The overall problem is here formalized by a nonlinear
constrained multiobjective optimization problem and solved by a goal attainment based methodology.
The application of this solution approach allows the analyst to identify the optimal operation state of the
distributed energy hubs which ensures an effective and reliable operation of the multicarrier energy
network in spite of large variations of load demands and energy prices. Simulation results obtained on
the 30 bus IEEE test network are presented and discussed in order to demonstrate the significance and
the validity of the proposed method
