    Design and Evaluation Framework for Modular Hybrid Battery Energy Storage Systems in Full-Electric Marine Applications

    In the context of the maritime transportation sector electrification, battery hybridization has been identified as a promising manner of meeting the critical requirements on energy and power density, as well as lifetime and safety. Today, multiple promising battery hybridization topologies have been identified, while there is not a level playing field enabling comparison between different topologies. This study bridges this gap directly by proposing a generic hybrid battery energy storage system (HBESS) design and evaluation framework in full-electric marine applications that accounts for the key design requirements in the system topology conceptualization phase. In doing so, generalized key component models, such as battery cell models, aging models, power converter models, and thermal models, are established. Additionally, given the selected key requirements in this study, the case study comparing one baseline monotype design and two HBESS topologies has shown the clear advantage of battery hybridization. Furthermore, we find that, depending on the topology selection and the specific load scenario being considered, power converter devices can also worsen the key performance indexes.     A Cryogenically-Cooled High-Sensitivity Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Spectrometer

    The paper describes a radio frequency (RF) spectrometer for 14N nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectroscopy that uses a detector coil cooled to 77 K to maximize measurement sensitivity. The design uses a minimally-intrusive network of active duplexers and mechanical contact switches to realize a digitally reconfigurable series/parallel coil tuning network that allows transmit- and receive-mode performance to be independently optimized. The design is battery-powered and includes a mixed-signal embedded system to monitor and control secondary processes, thus enabling autonomous operation. Tests on an acetaminophen sample show that cooling both the detector and sample increases the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) per scan by a factor of approximately 88 (in power units), in good agreement with theoretical predictions.Comment: Submitted to Review of Scientific Instrument

    Run-to-Run Control for Active Balancing of Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery Packs

    \ua9 1986-2012 IEEE. Lithium iron phosphate battery packs are widely employed for energy storage in electrified vehicles and power grids. However, their flat voltage curves rendering the weakly observable state of charge are a critical stumbling block for charge equalization management. This paper focuses on the real-time active balancing of series-connected lithium iron phosphate batteries. In the absence of accurate in situ state information in the voltage plateau, a balancing current ratio (BCR) based algorithm is proposed for battery balancing. Then, BCR-based and voltage-based algorithms are fused, responsible for the balancing task within and beyond the voltage plateau, respectively. The balancing process is formulated as a batch-based run-to-run control problem, as the first time in the research area of battery management. The control algorithm acts in two timescales, including timewise control within each batch run and batchwise control at the end of each batch. Hardware-in-the-loop experiments demonstrate that the proposed balancing algorithm is able to release 97.1% of the theoretical capacity and can improve the capacity utilization by 5.7% from its benchmarking algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can be coded in C language with the binary code in 118 328 bytes only and, thus, is readily implementable in real time

    Battery Management System for Future Electric Vehicles

    The future of electric vehicles relies nearly entirely on the design, monitoring, and control of the vehicle battery and its associated systems. Along with an initial optimal design of the cell/pack-level structure, the runtime performance of the battery needs to be continuously monitored and optimized for a safe and reliable operation and prolonged life. Improved charging techniques need to be developed to protect and preserve the battery.     Holistic Management of Energy Storage System for Electric Vehicles

    While electric vehicles (EVs) have recently gained popularity owing to their economic and environmental benefits, they have not yet dominated conventional combustion-engine vehicles in the market. This is due mainly to their short driving range, high cost and/or quick battery performance degradation. One way to mitigate these shortcomings is to optimize the driving range and the degradation rate with a more efficient battery management system (BMS). This dissertation explores how a more efficient BMS can extend EVs' driving range during their warranty periods. Without changing the battery capacity/size, the driving range and the degradation rate can be optimized by adaptively regulating main operational conditions: battery ambient temperature (T), the amount of transferred battery energy, discharge/charge current (I), and the range of operating voltage (min/max V). To this end, we build a real-time adaptive BMS from a cyber-physical system (CPS) perspective. This adaptive BMS calculates target operation conditions (T, I, min/max V) based on: (a) a battery performance model that captures the effects of operational conditions on the degradation rate and the driving range; (b) a real-time battery power predictor; and (c) a temperature and discharge/charge current scheduler to determine target battery operation conditions that guarantee the warranty period and maximize the driving range. Physical components of the CPS actuate battery control knobs to achieve the target operational conditions scheduled by the batteries cyber components of CPS. There are two subcomponents for each condition (T, I): (d) a battery thermal management system and (e) a battery discharge/charge current management system that consists of algorithms and hardware platforms for each sub-system. This dissertation demonstrates that a more efficient real-time BMS can provide EVs with necessary energy for the specified period of time while slowing down performance degradation. Our proposed BMS adjusts temperature and discharge/charge current in real time, considering battery power requirements and behavior patterns, so as to maximize the battery performance for all battery types and drivers.     Comparative Analysis of Unipolar and Bipolar Control of Modular Battery for Thermal and State-of-Charge Balancing

    Thermal and state-of-charge imbalance is a well known issue to cause nonuniform ageing in batteries. The modular battery based on cascaded converters is a potential solution to this problem. This paper presents bipolar control (BPC) of a modular battery and compares it with previously proposed unipolar control (UPC) mode in terms of thermal/SOC balancing performance and energy efficiency. The BPC needs four-quadrant operation of full-bridge converter using bipolar pulse-width modulation (PWM) inside each module, whereas UPC only needs half-bridge converter with unipolar PWM. The BPC, unlike UPC, enables charging of some cells while discharging others. An averaged state-space electro-thermal battery model is derived for a convex formulation of the balancing control problem. The control problem is formulated on a constrained LQ form and solved in a model predictive control framework using one-step ahead prediction. The simulation results show that BPC, without even requiring load current variations, gives better balancing performance than UPC, but at the cost of reduced efficiency. The UPC requires at least current direction reversal for acceptable balancing performance. In short, the UPC is a more cost and energy efficient solution for EV and PHEV applications whereas the BPC can be beneficial in applications involving load cycles with high current pulses of long duration

ORYX 2.0 is a rover designed for operation on rough terrain to facilitate space related technology research and Earth exploration missions. Currently there are no low-cost rovers available to academia or industry, making it difficult to conduct research related to surface exploration. ORYX 2.0 fills this gap by serving as a ruggedized highly mobile research platform with many features aimed at simplifying payload integration. Multiple teleoperated field testing trials on a variety of terrains validated the rover’s ruggedness and ability to operate soundly. Lastly, a deployable pan-tilt camera was designed, built, and tested, as an example payload
