Building Robust E-learning Software Systems Using Web Technologies

    Get PDF
Building a robust e-learning software platform represents a major challenge for both the project manager and the development team. Since functionalities of these software systems improves and grows by the day, several aspects must be taken into consideration – e.g. workflows, use-casesor alternative scenarios – in order to create a well standardized and fully functional integrated learning management system. The paper will focus on a model of implementation for an e-learning software system, analyzing its features, its functional mechanisms as well as exemplifying an implementation algorithm. A list of some of the mostly used web technologies (both server-side and client-side) will be analyzed and a discussion over major security leaks of web applicationswill also be put in discussion.E-learning, E-testing, Web Technology, Software System, Web Platform

A web-based learning system for software test professionals

    Get PDF
Fierce competition, globalization, and technology innovation have forced software companies to search for new ways to improve competitive advantage. Web-based learning is increasingly being used by software companies as an emergent approach for enhancing the skills of knowledge workers. However, the current practice of Web-based learning is perceived as being less goal-effective due to a lack of alignment of learning with work performance. To solve this problem, a performance-oriented approach is presented in this study. Using this approach, a Web-based learning system has been developed for software testing professionals. An empirical study was conducted by inviting employees working in the software testing sector to use and evaluate the system. The results showed the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2011 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

Ontology Engineering and Modelling for Learning Activity in a Multiagent System

Abstract-Prior and personalised learning is one area in cognitive learning that can be engineered on the platform of agent based intelligent systems. The requirement for inviting prior learning into a new learning context is the concept relationships between previous learning and the desired learning. In this paper this relationship has been established using ontology and mutliagent system in orchestrating a more personalised learning. This paper thus, present the use of Protege in the design of structured learning concepts in the domain of Computer Architecture. In this knowledge representation, attributes or properties are specified for classes, subclasses and individual members along with their constraints using Universal and Existential Restrictions. To the individuals, universal resource locator (URL) data values of the type string are assigned using the Data Property. And this process which has evolved in the development of a multiagent system for assessing prior learning before the take-off of new learning is being implemented with Jason AgentSpeak language

Guided generation of pedagogical concept maps from the Wikipedia

We propose a new method for guided generation of concept maps from open accessonline knowledge resources such as Wikies. Based on this method we have implemented aprototype extracting semantic relations from sentences surrounding hyperlinks in the Wikipedia’sarticles and letting a learner to create customized learning objects in real-time based oncollaborative recommendations considering her earlier knowledge. Open source modules enablepedagogically motivated exploration in Wiki spaces, corresponding to an intelligent tutoringsystem. The method extracted compact noun–verb–noun phrases, suggested for labeling arcsbetween nodes that were labeled with article titles. On average, 80 percent of these phrases wereuseful while their length was only 20 percent of the length of the original sentences. Experimentsindicate that even simple analysis algorithms can well support user-initiated information retrievaland building intuitive learning objects that follow the learner’s needs.Peer reviewe

Design of a performance-oriented workplace e-learning system using ontology

    Get PDF
E-learning is emerging as a popular learning approach utilized by many organizations. Despite the ever increasing practices of e-learning in the workplace, most e-learning applications fail to meet learners' needs or serve organization's quests for success. Significant gaps exist between organizational interests and individual needs when they come to e-learning, which make e-learning applications less goal-effective. To solve this problem, a performance-oriented approach is presented in this study. Key performance indicators (KPIs) are set up to clarify organizational training needs, and help learners establish rational learning objectives. In addition, ontology is used for constructing formal and machine-understandable conceptualization of the performance-oriented learning environment. Using this approach, a KPI-oriented learning ontology and prototype system have been developed and evaluated to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The Integrated Environment for Learning Objects Design and Storing in Semantic Web

    Get PDF
There is a variety of tools and environments for Learning Objects (LOs) design and delivery as well as learning object repositories (LOR) but the researchers could not find a repository that includes both functions: creation and storing of LOs. A number of different integrated learning systems are suggested for users that demonstrate the variety of e-learning methods and semantic capabilities. LO repository oer.ndma.lt/lor, that we are going to present, is very friendly and interoperable to use and assure LO design, search in semantic web, adaptation of the re-used objects and storing. There are no more existing LO repositories with the functionality presented by researchers. Transformation of closed education into open one without existence of well-structured, multifunctional and integrated environment becomes problematic. Authors will present an integrated environment for the LO design, search in semantic web, adaptation and storing of newly designed or re-designed LO. Measures will support the transformation of closed education into open and will assure effective design, re-usability and adaptation of LO in the integrated environment

Pedagogically-driven Ontology Network for Conceptualizing the e-Learning Assessment Domain

    Get PDF
The use of ontologies as tools to guide the generation, organization and personalization of e-learning content, including e-assessment, has drawn attention of the researchers because ontologies can represent the knowledge of a given domain and researchers use the ontology to reason about it. Although the use of these semantic technologies tends to enhance technology-based educational processes, the lack of validation to improve the quality of learning in their use makes the educator feel reluctant to use them. This paper presents progress in the development of an ontology network, called AONet, that conceptualizes the e-assessment domain with the aim of supporting the semi-automatic generation of assessment, taking into account not only technical aspects but also pedagogical ones.Fil: Romero, Lucila.
