Neural View-Interpolation for Sparse Light Field Video
We suggest representing light field (LF) videos as "one-off" neural networks (NN), i.e., a learned mapping from view-plus-time coordinates to high-resolution color values, trained on sparse views. Initially, this sounds like a bad idea for three main reasons: First, a NN LF will likely have less quality than a same-sized pixel basis representation. Second, only few training data, e.g., 9 exemplars per frame are available for sparse LF videos. Third, there is no generalization across LFs, but across view and time instead. Consequently, a network needs to be trained for each LF video. Surprisingly, these problems can turn into substantial advantages: Other than the linear pixel basis, a NN has to come up with a compact, non-linear i.e., more intelligent, explanation of color, conditioned on the sparse view and time coordinates. As observed for many NN however, this representation now is interpolatable: if the image output for sparse view coordinates is plausible, it is for all intermediate, continuous coordinates as well. Our specific network architecture involves a differentiable occlusion-aware warping step, which leads to a compact set of trainable parameters and consequently fast learning and fast execution
A Formal Framework for Linguistic Annotation
`Linguistic annotation' covers any descriptive or analytic notations applied
to raw language data. The basic data may be in the form of time functions --
audio, video and/or physiological recordings -- or it may be textual. The added
notations may include transcriptions of all sorts (from phonetic features to
discourse structures), part-of-speech and sense tagging, syntactic analysis,
`named entity' identification, co-reference annotation, and so on. While there
are several ongoing efforts to provide formats and tools for such annotations
and to publish annotated linguistic databases, the lack of widely accepted
standards is becoming a critical problem. Proposed standards, to the extent
they exist, have focussed on file formats. This paper focuses instead on the
logical structure of linguistic annotations. We survey a wide variety of
existing annotation formats and demonstrate a common conceptual core, the
annotation graph. This provides a formal framework for constructing,
maintaining and searching linguistic annotations, while remaining consistent
with many alternative data structures and file formats.Comment: 49 page
Encoding of phonology in a recurrent neural model of grounded speech
We study the representation and encoding of phonemes in a recurrent neural
network model of grounded speech. We use a model which processes images and
their spoken descriptions, and projects the visual and auditory representations
into the same semantic space. We perform a number of analyses on how
information about individual phonemes is encoded in the MFCC features extracted
from the speech signal, and the activations of the layers of the model. Via
experiments with phoneme decoding and phoneme discrimination we show that
phoneme representations are most salient in the lower layers of the model,
where low-level signals are processed at a fine-grained level, although a large
amount of phonological information is retain at the top recurrent layer. We
further find out that the attention mechanism following the top recurrent layer
significantly attenuates encoding of phonology and makes the utterance
embeddings much more invariant to synonymy. Moreover, a hierarchical clustering
of phoneme representations learned by the network shows an organizational
structure of phonemes similar to those proposed in linguistics.Comment: Accepted at CoNLL 201
GRASS: Generative Recursive Autoencoders for Shape Structures
We introduce a novel neural network architecture for encoding and synthesis
of 3D shapes, particularly their structures. Our key insight is that 3D shapes
are effectively characterized by their hierarchical organization of parts,
which reflects fundamental intra-shape relationships such as adjacency and
symmetry. We develop a recursive neural net (RvNN) based autoencoder to map a
flat, unlabeled, arbitrary part layout to a compact code. The code effectively
captures hierarchical structures of man-made 3D objects of varying structural
complexities despite being fixed-dimensional: an associated decoder maps a code
back to a full hierarchy. The learned bidirectional mapping is further tuned
using an adversarial setup to yield a generative model of plausible structures,
from which novel structures can be sampled. Finally, our structure synthesis
framework is augmented by a second trained module that produces fine-grained
part geometry, conditioned on global and local structural context, leading to a
full generative pipeline for 3D shapes. We demonstrate that without
supervision, our network learns meaningful structural hierarchies adhering to
perceptual grouping principles, produces compact codes which enable
applications such as shape classification and partial matching, and supports
shape synthesis and interpolation with significant variations in topology and

Generative Adversarial Text to Image Synthesis
Automatic synthesis of realistic images from text would be interesting and
useful, but current AI systems are still far from this goal. However, in recent
years generic and powerful recurrent neural network architectures have been
developed to learn discriminative text feature representations. Meanwhile, deep
convolutional generative adversarial networks (GANs) have begun to generate
highly compelling images of specific categories, such as faces, album covers,
and room interiors. In this work, we develop a novel deep architecture and GAN
formulation to effectively bridge these advances in text and image model- ing,
translating visual concepts from characters to pixels. We demonstrate the
capability of our model to generate plausible images of birds and flowers from
