    An O(Tˆ3) algorithm for the capacitated lot sizing problem with minimum order quantities

    This paper explores a single-item capacitated lot sizing problem with minimum order quantity, which plays the role of minor set-up cost. We work out the necessary and suffcient solvability conditions and apply the general dynamic programming technique to develop an O(T³) exact algorithm that is based on the concept of minimal sub-problems. An investigation of the properties of the optimal solution structure allows us to construct explicit solutions to the obtained sub-problems and prove their optimality.     Improved Lower Bounds For The Capacitated Lot Sizing Problem With Set Up Times

    We present new lower bounds for the Capacitated Lot Sizing Problem with Set Up Times. We improve the lower bound obtained by the textbook Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition where the capacity constraints are the linking constraints. In our approach, Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition is applied to the network reformulation of the problem. The demand constraints are the linking constraints and the problem decomposes into subproblems per period containing the capacity and set up constraints. We propose a customized branch-and-bound algorithm for solving the subproblem based on its similarities with the Linear Multiple Choice Knapsack Problem. Further we present a Lagrange Relaxation algorithm for finding this lower bound. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that computational results are presented for this decomposition and a comparison of our lower bound to other lower bounds proposed in the literature indicates its high quality.Lagrange relaxation;Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition;capacitated lot sizing;lower bounds

    Modeling Industrial Lot Sizing Problems: A Review

    In this paper we give an overview of recent developments in the field of modeling single-level dynamic lot sizing problems. The focus of this paper is on the modeling various industrial extensions and not on the solution approaches. The timeliness of such a review stems from the growing industry need to solve more realistic and comprehensive production planning problems. First, several different basic lot sizing problems are defined. Many extensions of these problems have been proposed and the research basically expands in two opposite directions. The first line of research focuses on modeling the operational aspects in more detail. The discussion is organized around five aspects: the set ups, the characteristics of the production process, the inventory, demand side and rolling horizon. The second direction is towards more tactical and strategic models in which the lot sizing problem is a core substructure, such as integrated production-distribution planning or supplier selection. Recent advances in both directions are discussed. Finally, we give some concluding remarks and point out interesting areas for future research

    Single item lot-sizing with non-decreasing capacities

    We consider the single item lot-sizing problem with capacities that are non-decreasing over time. When the cost function is i) non-speculative or Wagner-Whitin (for instance, constant unit production costs and non-negative unit holding costs), and ii) the production set-up costs are non-increasing over time, it is known that the minimum cost lot-sizing problem is polynomially solvable using dynamic programming. When the capacities are non-decreasing, we derive a compact mixed integer programming reformulation whose linear programming relaxation solves the lot-sizing problem to optimality when the objective function satisfies i) and ii). The formulation is based on mixing set relaxations and reduces to the (known) convex hull of solutions when the capacities are constant over time. We illustrate the use and effectiveness of this improved LP formulation on a new test instances, including instances with and without Wagner-Whitin costs, and with both non-decreasing and arbitrary capacities over time.lot-sizing, mixing set relaxation, compact reformulation, production planning, mixed integer programming

    Lot-Sizing Problem for a Multi-Item Multi-level Capacitated Batch Production System with Setup Carryover, Emission Control and Backlogging using a Dynamic Program and Decomposition Heuristic

    Wagner and Whitin (1958) develop an algorithm to solve the dynamic Economic Lot-Sizing Problem (ELSP), which is widely applied in inventory control, production planning, and capacity planning. The original algorithm runs in O(T^2) time, where T is the number of periods of the problem instance. Afterward few linear-time algorithms have been developed to solve the Wagner-Whitin (WW) lot-sizing problem; examples include the ELSP and equivalent Single Machine Batch-Sizing Problem (SMBSP). This dissertation revisits the algorithms for ELSPs and SMBSPs under WW cost structure, presents a new efficient linear-time algorithm, and compares the developed algorithm against comparable ones in the literature. The developed algorithm employs both lists and stacks data structure, which is completely a different approach than the rest of the algorithms for ELSPs and SMBSPs. Analysis of the developed algorithm shows that it executes fewer number of basic actions throughout the algorithm and hence it improves the CPU time by a maximum of 51.40% for ELSPs and 29.03% for SMBSPs. It can be concluded that the new algorithm is faster than existing algorithms for both ELSPs and SMBSPs. Lot-sizing decisions are crucial because these decisions help the manufacturer determine the quantity and time to produce an item with a minimum cost. The efficiency and productivity of a system is completely dependent upon the right choice of lot-sizes. Therefore, developing and improving solution procedures for lot-sizing problems is key. This dissertation addresses the classical Multi-Level Capacitated Lot-Sizing Problem (MLCLSP) and an extension of the MLCLSP with a Setup Carryover, Backlogging and Emission control. An item Dantzig Wolfe (DW) decomposition technique with an embedded Column Generation (CG) procedure is used to solve the problem. The original problem is decomposed into a master problem and a number of subproblems, which are solved using dynamic programming approach. Since the subproblems are solved independently, the solution of the subproblems often becomes infeasible for the master problem. A multi-step iterative Capacity Allocation (CA) heuristic is used to tackle this infeasibility. A Linear Programming (LP) based improvement procedure is used to refine the solutions obtained from the heuristic method. A comparative study of the proposed heuristic for the first problem (MLCLSP) is conducted and the results demonstrate that the proposed heuristic provide less optimality gap in comparison with that obtained in the literature. The Setup Carryover Assignment Problem (SCAP), which consists of determining the setup carryover plan of multiple items for a given lot-size over a finite planning horizon is modelled as a problem of finding Maximum Weighted Independent Set (MWIS) in a chain of cliques. The SCAP is formulated using a clique constraint and it is proved that the incidence matrix of the SCAP has totally unimodular structure and the LP relaxation of the proposed SCAP formulation always provides integer optimum solution. Moreover, an alternative proof that the relaxed ILP guarantees integer solution is presented in this dissertation. Thus, the SCAP and the special case of the MWIS in a chain of cliques are solvable in polynomial time

    The development and testing of new, single and multiple echelon, dynamic, capacitated, lot sizing heuristics

    Three new heuristics and two random problem generators are introduced and tested. These heuristics and problem generators are associated with single and multiple echelon, dynamic, capacitated lot sizing problems, with or without setup times. These types of problems often occur in an MRP environment;First, the Dixon and Silver (DS) lot sizing heuristic was extended. The new, single echelon heuristic offers improved cost performance at a small computational expense. It incorporates newly developed perturbation factors that allow for multiple iterations of the DS heuristic. At the conclusion of all iterations, the lowest cost production plan is recalled. The second, single echelon heuristic developed and tested, the MG heuristic, is capable of solving large-scale, dynamic, capacitated, lot sizing problems, with or without setup times. This heuristic has three main sections: (A) Wagner-Whitin algorithm and a feasibility seeking subroutine; (B) a DS heuristic modified to allow for setup times; and (C) newly developed improvement algorithms that seek lower costs while maintaining feasibility;Comparison testing of the MG heuristic against other leading heuristics used a random problem generator to produce realistic, large-scale, single echelon problems. For even the largest group of problems tested, 4000 items and 25 periods, its average CPU time (on a DECstation 5000) was 1.0 minute. And, for all 216 problems tested, the MG heuristic\u27s average solution costs were just 0.86% higher than the best heuristic against which it was tested, at 0.026 the computation time;The new, multiple echelon heuristic utilizes multiple iterations of a sequential top-down approach that combines single echelon approaches with a feasibility feedback mechanism to higher echelons. Additionally, the heuristic incorporates two cost modification procedures: (A) Blackburn and Millen\u27s KCC procedure; and (B) newly developed holding cost adjustment factors, one for each echelon. The holding cost adjustment factors are available for application to each item on a particular echelon and assist the heuristic in finding a feasible solution to capacitated problems. Then, the best combination of factors is explored with a simulated annealing procedure. In comparison to other heuristics, encouraging test results were obtained for assembly problems produced using a new random problem generator

    A Geometric Algorithm to solve the NI/G/NI/ND Capacitated Lot-Sizing Problem in O(T^2) Time

    In this paper we consider the capacitated lot-sizing problem (CLSP) with linear costs. It is known that this problem is NP-hard, but there exist special cases that can be solved in polynomial time. We derive a backward algorithm, based on the forward algorithm by Chen et al. (1994), to solve the general CLSP. By adapting this backward algorithm, we arrive at a new O(T^2) algorithm for the CLSP with non-increasing setup cost, general holding cost, non-increasing production cost and non-decreasing capacities over time. Numerical tests show the superior performance of our algorithm compared to the algorithm proposed by Chung and Lin (1988). We also analyze why this is the case

    Valid inequalities for the single-item capacitated lot sizing problem with step-wise costs

    This paper presents a new class of valid inequalities for the single-item capacitated lotsizing problem with step-wise production costs (LS-SW). We first provide a survey of different optimization methods proposed to solve LS-SW. Then, flow cover and flow cover inequalities derived from the single node flow set are described in order to generate the new class of valid inequalities. The single node flow set can be seen as a generalization of some valid relaxations of LS-SW. A new class of valid inequalities we call mixed flow cover, is derived from the integer flow cover inequalities by a lifting procedure. The lifting coefficients are sequence independent when the batch sizes (V) and the production capacities (P) are constant and if V divides P. When the restriction of the divisibility is removed, the lifting coefficients are shown to be sequence independent. We identify some cases where the mixed flow cover inequalities are facet defining. A cutting plane algorithmis proposed for these three classes of valid inequalities. The exact separation algorithmproposed for the constant capacitated case runs in polynomial time.
