    Real-time scheduling of a tertiary-storage juke-box

    We present a jukebox scheduler for real-time data. The scheduler is part of a hierarchical real-time file system to be used over a network. A jukebox is a large tertiary storage device whose removable media (e.g. cd-rom, dvd-rom) are loaded and unloaded from one or more drives by a robot. The problem with tertiary storage is that media exchange times are high and the number of drives is limited. This makes scheduling tertiary storage complicated. The storage media switching time in a jukebox is in the order of tens of seconds. Therefore multiplexing between two files stored in different media is many orders of magnitude slower than doing the same in secondary storage. The goal of the scheduler is to schedule the use of the jukebox devices (arm and drives) in such a way that the system can guarantee the deadlines while minimizing the response time. The problem is similar to that of scheduling multiple processors with the additional difficulty of having to deal with the high switching times and the use of a shared resource (the arm). Finding an optimal schedule is an NP-hard problem. We provide a near-optimal polynomial solution by using heuristics to prune the tree of solutions. The scheduling time is in average less than 100 ms. The incoming requests are scheduled on-line

    Digital information support for concept design

    This paper outlines the issues in effective utilisation of digital resources in conceptual design. Access to appropriate information acts as stimuli and can lead to better substantiated concepts. This paper addresses the issues of presenting such information in a digital form for effective use, exploring digital libraries and groupware as relevant literature areas, and argues that improved integration of these two technologies is necessary to better support the concept generation task. The development of the LauLima learning environment and digital library is consequently outlined. Despite its attempts to integrate the designers' working space and digital resources, continuing issues in library utilisation and migration of information to design concepts are highlighted through a class study. In light of this, new models of interaction to increase information use are explored

    An integrated mathematical model of cellular cholesterol biosynthesis and lipoprotein metabolism

    Cholesterol regulation is an important aspect of human health. In this work we bring together and extend two recent mathematical models describing cholesterol biosynthesis and lipoprotein endocytosis to create an integrated model of lipoprotein metabolism in the context of a single hepatocyte. The integrated model includes a description of low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor and cholesterol synthesis, delipidation of very low density lipoproteins (VLDLs) to LDLs and subsequent lipoprotein endocytosis. Model analysis shows that cholesterol biosynthesis produces the majority of intracellular cholesterol. The availability of free receptors does not greatly effect the concentration of intracellular cholesterol, but has a detrimental effect on extracellular VLDL and LDL levels. We test our model by considering its ability to reproduce the known biology of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia and statin therapy. In each case the model reproduces the known biological behaviour. Quantitative differences in response to statin therapy are discussed in the context of the need to extend the work to a more {\it in vivo} setting via the incorporation of more dietary lipoprotein related processes and the need for further testing and parameterisation of {\it in silico} models of lipoprotein metabolism

    Promote-IT: An efficient Real-Time Tertiary-Storage Scheduler

    Promote-IT is an efficient heuristic scheduler that provides QoS guarantees for accessing data from tertiary storage. It can deal with a wide variety of requests and jukebox hardware. It provides short response and confirmation times, and makes good use of the jukebox resources. It separates the scheduling and dispatching functionality and effectively uses this separation to dispatch tasks earlier than scheduled, provided that the resource constraints are respected and no task misses its deadline. To prove the efficiency of Promote-IT we implemented alternative schedulers based on different scheduling models and scheduling paradigms. The evaluation shows that Promote-IT performs better than the other heuristic schedulers. Additionally, Promote-IT provides response-times near the optimum in cases where the optimal scheduler can be computed

    A framework for design engineering education in a global context

    This paper presents a framework for teaching design engineering in a global context using innovative technologies to enable distributed teams to work together effectively across international and cultural boundaries. The DIDET Framework represents the findings of a 5-year project conducted by the University of Strathclyde, Stanford University and Olin College which enhanced student learning opportunities by enabling them to partake in global, team based design engineering projects, directly experiencing different cultural contexts and accessing a variety of digital information sources via a range of innovative technology. The use of innovative technology enabled the formalization of design knowledge within international student teams as did the methods that were developed for students to store, share and reuse information. Coaching methods were used by teaching staff to support distributed teams and evaluation work on relevant classes was carried out regularly to allow ongoing improvement of learning and teaching and show improvements in student learning. Major findings of the 5 year project include the requirement to overcome technological, pedagogical and cultural issues for successful eLearning implementations. The DIDET Framework encapsulates all the conclusions relating to design engineering in a global context. Each of the principles for effective distributed design learning is shown along with relevant findings and suggested metrics. The findings detailed in the paper were reached through a series of interventions in design engineering education at the collaborating institutions. Evaluation was carried out on an ongoing basis and fed back into project development, both on the pedagogical and the technological approaches

    The inclusive-exclusive distinction in Tibeto-Burman languages

    A survey of 170 Tibeto-Burman languages showed 69 with a distinction between inclusive and exclusive first-person plural pronouns, 18 of which also show inclusive- exclusive in Idual. Only the Kiranti languages and some Chin languages have inclusive-exclusive in the person marking. Of the forms of the pronouns involved in the inclusive-exclusive opposition, usually the exclusive form is less marked and historically prior to the inclusive form, and we find the distinction cannot be reconstructed to Proto-Tibeto-Burman or to mid level groupings. Qnly the Kiranti group has marking of the distinction that can be reconstructed to the proto level, and this is also reflected in the person-marking system

    Assessing the effect of statins in lowering the risk of stroke and preventing cerebral ischemia in patients with hypercholesterolemia

    Numerous analyses have explored the role of statins in reducing stroke incidence, reducing cerebral ischemia in hypercholesterolemic patients, and preventing ischemic stroke. This paper aims to assess the effect of statins in lowering the risk of stroke and preventing cerebral ischemia in patients with hypercholesterolemia. To achieve this objective, the literature was reviewed, randomized control tests were analyzed, and a systematic review was performed. The risk of developing cerebral ischemia was found to be reduced in hypercholesterolemic patients and patients with a history of cerebrovascular disease. However, it is unknown whether this reduction in incidence is a result of the drug, which reduces low-density lipoprotein levels in the blood, or to statins’ pleotropic effects on the vascular endothelium. Since their discovery, statins have proven to be beneficial in controlling cholesterol blood levels. Moreover, statins have been shown to have pleotropic effects after a certain period of use, one of which is lowering ischemic stroke incidence in hypercholesterolemic patients. Most recently, statins have been found to lower systolic blood pressure. It is not yet clear whether it has a significant effect on mortality or whether or not it is linked to statins

    New approaches in detection and treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia

    Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder that clinically leads to increased low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. As a consequence, FH patients are at high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Mutations are found in genes coding for the LDLR, apoB, and PCSK9, although FH cannot be ruled out in the absence of a mutation in one of these genes. It is pivotal to diagnose FH at an early age, since lipid lowering results in a decreased risk of cardiovascular complications especially if initiated early, but unfortunately FH is largely underdiagnosed. While a number of clinical criteria are available, identification of a pathogenic mutation in any of the three aforementioned genes is seen by many as a way to establish a definitive diagnosis of FH. It should be remembered that clinical treatment is based on LDL-C levels and not solely on presence or absence of genetic mutations as LDL-C is what drives risk. Traditionally, mutation detection has been done by means of dideoxy sequencing. However, novel molecular testing methods are gradually being introduced. These next generation sequencing-based methods are likely to be applied on broader scale once their efficacy and effect on cost are being established. Statins are the first-line therapy of choice for FH patients as they have been proven to reduce CVD risk across a range of conditions including hypercholesterolemia (though not specifically tested in FH). However, in a significant proportion of FH patients LDL-C goals are not met, despite the use of maximal statin doses and additional lipid-lowering therapies. This underlines the need for additional therapies, and inhibition of PCSK9 and CETP is among the most promising new therapeutic options.
