Scheduling for next generation WLANs: filling the gap between offered and observed data rates
In wireless networks, opportunistic scheduling is used to increase system throughput by exploiting multi-user diversity. Although recent advances have increased physical layer data rates supported in wireless local area networks (WLANs), actual throughput realized are significantly lower due to overhead. Accordingly, the frame aggregation concept is used in next generation WLANs to improve efficiency. However, with frame aggregation, traditional opportunistic schemes are no longer optimal. In this paper, we propose schedulers that take queue and channel conditions into account jointly, to maximize throughput observed at the users for next generation WLANs. We also extend this work to design two schedulers that perform block scheduling for maximizing network throughput over multiple transmission sequences. For these schedulers, which make decisions over long time durations, we model the system using queueing theory and determine users' temporal access proportions according to this model. Through detailed simulations, we show that all our proposed algorithms offer significant throughput improvement, better fairness, and much lower delay compared with traditional opportunistic schedulers, facilitating the practical use of the evolving standard for next generation wireless networks
Opportunistic Scheduling and Beamforming for MIMO-OFDMA Downlink Systems with Reduced Feedback
Opportunistic scheduling and beamforming schemes with reduced feedback are
proposed for MIMO-OFDMA downlink systems. Unlike the conventional beamforming
schemes in which beamforming is implemented solely by the base station (BS) in
a per-subcarrier fashion, the proposed schemes take advantages of a novel
channel decomposition technique to perform beamforming jointly by the BS and
the mobile terminal (MT). The resulting beamforming schemes allow the BS to
employ only {\em one} beamforming matrix (BFM) to form beams for {\em all}
subcarriers while each MT completes the beamforming task for each subcarrier
locally. Consequently, for a MIMO-OFDMA system with subcarriers, the
proposed opportunistic scheduling and beamforming schemes require only one BFM
index and supportable throughputs to be returned from each MT to the BS, in
contrast to BFM indices and supportable throughputs required by the
conventional schemes. The advantage of the proposed schemes becomes more
evident when a further feedback reduction is achieved by grouping adjacent
subcarriers into exclusive clusters and returning only cluster information from
each MT. Theoretical analysis and computer simulation confirm the effectiveness
of the proposed reduced-feedback schemes.Comment: Proceedings of the 2008 IEEE International Conference on

Cognitive Interference Alignment for OFDM Two-tiered Networks
In this contribution, we introduce an interference alignment scheme that
allows the coexistence of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)
macro-cell and a cognitive small-cell, deployed in a two-tiered structure and
transmitting over the same bandwidth. We derive the optimal linear strategy for
the single antenna secondary base station, maximizing the spectral efficiency
of the opportunistic link, accounting for both signal sub-space structure and
power loading strategy. Our analytical and numerical findings prove that the
precoder structure proposed is optimal for the considered scenario in the face
of Rayleigh and exponential decaying channels.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Accepted and presented at the IEEE 13th

Weighted Sum Rate Maximization for Downlink OFDMA with Subcarrier-pair based Opportunistic DF Relaying
This paper addresses a weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization problem for
downlink OFDMA aided by a decode-and-forward (DF) relay under a total power
constraint. A novel subcarrier-pair based opportunistic DF relaying protocol is
proposed. Specifically, user message bits are transmitted in two time slots. A
subcarrier in the first slot can be paired with a subcarrier in the second slot
for the DF relay-aided transmission to a user. In particular, the source and
the relay can transmit simultaneously to implement beamforming at the
subcarrier in the second slot. Each unpaired subcarrier in either the first or
second slot is used for the source's direct transmission to a user. A benchmark
protocol, same as the proposed one except that the transmit beamforming is not
used for the relay-aided transmission, is also considered. For each protocol, a
polynomial-complexity algorithm is developed to find at least an approximately
optimum resource allocation (RA), by using continuous relaxation, the dual
method, and Hungarian algorithm. Instrumental to the algorithm design is an
elegant definition of optimization variables, motivated by the idea of
regarding the unpaired subcarriers as virtual subcarrier pairs in the direct
transmission mode. The effectiveness of the RA algorithm and the impact of
relay position and total power on the protocols' performance are illustrated by
numerical experiments. The proposed protocol always leads to a maximum WSR
equal to or greater than that for the benchmark one, and the performance gain
of using the proposed one is significant especially when the relay is in close
proximity to the source and the total power is low. Theoretical analysis is
presented to interpret these observations.Comment: 8 figures, accepted and to be published in IEEE Transactions on
