An ontology design pattern for representing recurrent situations
In this Chapter, we present an Ontology Design Pattern for representing situations that recur at regular periods and share some invariant factors, which unify them conceptually: we refer to this set of recurring situations as recurrent situation series. The proposed pattern appears to be foundational, since it can be generalised for modelling the top-level domain-independent concept of recurrence, which is strictly associated with invariance. The pattern reuses other foundational patterns such as Collection, Description and Situation, Classification, Sequence. Indeed, a recurrent situation series is formalised as both a collection of situations occurring regularly over time and unified according to some properties that are common to all the members, and a situation itself, which provides a relational context to its members that satisfy a reference description. Besides including some exemplifying instances of this pattern, we show how it has been implemented and specialised to model recurrent cultural events and ceremonies in ArCo, the Knowledge Graph of Italian cultural heritage
Towards an Intelligent Workflow Designer based on the Reuse of Workflow Patterns
In order to perform process-aware information systems we need sophisticated methods and concepts for designing and modeling processes. Recently, research on workflow patterns has emerged in order to increase the reuse of recurring workflow structures. However, current workflow modeling tools do not provide functionalities that enable users to define, query, and reuse workflow patterns properly. In this paper we gather a suite for both process modeling and normalization based on workflow patterns reuse. This suite must be used in the extension of some workflow design tool. ArCo: the Italian Cultural Heritage Knowledge Graph
ArCo is the Italian Cultural Heritage knowledge graph, consisting of a
network of seven vocabularies and 169 million triples about 820 thousand
cultural entities. It is distributed jointly with a SPARQL endpoint, a software
for converting catalogue records to RDF, and a rich suite of documentation
material (testing, evaluation, how-to, examples, etc.). ArCo is based on the
official General Catalogue of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and
Activities (MiBAC) - and its associated encoding regulations - which collects
and validates the catalogue records of (ideally) all Italian Cultural Heritage
properties (excluding libraries and archives), contributed by CH administrators
from all over Italy. We present its structure, design methods and tools, its
growing community, and delineate its importance, quality, and impact

A Semantic-based framework for discovering business process patterns
Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modeling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. This paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework synthesizes the idea from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

A platform for semantic web studies
The Semantic Web can be seen as a large, heterogeneous network of ontologies and semantic documents. Characterizing these ontologies, the way they relate and the way they are organized can help in better understanding how knowledge is produced and published online. It also provides new ways to explore and exploit this large collection of ontologies. In this paper, we present the foundation of a research platform for characterizing the Semantic Web, relying on the collection of ontologies and the functionalities provided by the Watson Semantic Web search engine. We more specifically focus on formalizing and monitoring relationships between ontologies online, considering a variety of different relations (similarity, versioning, agreement, modularity) and how they can help us obtaining meaningful overviews of the current state of the Semantic Web
Pattern-based design applied to cultural heritage knowledge graphs
Ontology Design Patterns (ODPs) have become an established and recognised
practice for guaranteeing good quality ontology engineering. There are several
ODP repositories where ODPs are shared as well as ontology design methodologies
recommending their reuse. Performing rigorous testing is recommended as well
for supporting ontology maintenance and validating the resulting resource
against its motivating requirements. Nevertheless, it is less than
straightforward to find guidelines on how to apply such methodologies for
developing domain-specific knowledge graphs. ArCo is the knowledge graph of
Italian Cultural Heritage and has been developed by using eXtreme Design (XD),
an ODP- and test-driven methodology. During its development, XD has been
adapted to the need of the CH domain e.g. gathering requirements from an open,
diverse community of consumers, a new ODP has been defined and many have been
specialised to address specific CH requirements. This paper presents ArCo and
describes how to apply XD to the development and validation of a CH knowledge
graph, also detailing the (intellectual) process implemented for matching the
encountered modelling problems to ODPs. Relevant contributions also include a
novel web tool for supporting unit-testing of knowledge graphs, a rigorous
evaluation of ArCo, and a discussion of methodological lessons learned during
ArCo development
EliXR-TIME: A Temporal Knowledge Representation for Clinical Research Eligibility Criteria.
Effective clinical text processing requires accurate extraction and representation of temporal expressions. Multiple temporal information extraction models were developed but a similar need for extracting temporal expressions in eligibility criteria (e.g., for eligibility determination) remains. We identified the temporal knowledge representation requirements of eligibility criteria by reviewing 100 temporal criteria. We developed EliXR-TIME, a frame-based representation designed to support semantic annotation for temporal expressions in eligibility criteria by reusing applicable classes from well-known clinical temporal knowledge representations. We used EliXR-TIME to analyze a training set of 50 new temporal eligibility criteria. We evaluated EliXR-TIME using an additional random sample of 20 eligibility criteria with temporal expressions that have no overlap with the training data, yielding 92.7% (76 / 82) inter-coder agreement on sentence chunking and 72% (72 / 100) agreement on semantic annotation. We conclude that this knowledge representation can facilitate semantic annotation of the temporal expressions in eligibility criteria
Frequent Use Cases Extraction from Legal Texts in the Data Protection Domain
Because of the recent entry into force of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a growing of documents issued by the European Union institutions and authorities often mention and discuss various use cases to be handled to comply with GDPR principles. This contribution addresses the problem of extracting recurrent use cases from legal documents belonging to the data protection domain by exploiting existing Ontology Design Patterns (ODPs). An analysis of ODPs that could be looked for inside data protection related documents is provided. Moreover, a first insight on how Natural Language Processing techniques could be exploited to identify recurrent ODPs from legal texts is presented.
