    Spatiotemporal graph queries on geographic databases under a conceptual abstraction scale

    Visual queries assist non-expert users to extract information from spatial databases in an intuitive and natural approach, making Geographic information systems comprehensive and efficient for a wide range of applications. A common visual means of querying takes the form of drawings or graphs, under which many spatial ambiguity and translation errors rise. In this study, common query attributes extracted from user graphs such as spatial topology, size, cardinality, and proximity are regarded under a conceptual moderation scheme. Thus, the system/user may concentrate on various conceptual combinations of information. Furthermore, time is incorporated to support spatiotemporal queries for changing scenes and moving objects. Arbitrary, relative, and absolute scaling is possible according to the data-set and application at hand. The theoretic approach is implemented under a prototype user interface system, called ShapeController. Under this prototype, a user may extract scene-based relations in an automatically inferred fashion, or include single object-oriented relations when all possible relations seem redundant. Finally, a natural language description of the query is extracted upon which the user may select the desired query relations. Experimentation on a spatial database demonstrates the concepts of predefined draw objects, scaling relaxation, conceptual abstraction, and scene, object- and textual-oriented transitions that promote query expressiveness and restrain ambiguities.peer-reviewe

    TEMPOS: A Platform for Developing Temporal Applications on Top of Object DBMS

    This paper presents TEMPOS: a set of models and languages supporting the manipulation of temporal data on top of object DBMS. The proposed models exploit object-oriented technology to meet some important, yet traditionally neglected design criteria related to legacy code migration and representation independence. Two complementary ways for accessing temporal data are offered: a query language and a visual browser. The query language, namely TempOQL, is an extension of OQL supporting the manipulation of histories regardless of their representations, through fully composable functional operators. The visual browser offers operators that facilitate several time-related interactive navigation tasks, such as studying a snapshot of a collection of objects at a given instant, or detecting and examining changes within temporal attributes and relationships. TEMPOS models and languages have been formalized both at the syntactical and the semantical level and have been implemented on top of an object DBMS. The suitability of the proposals with regard to applications' requirements has been validated through concrete case studies

    Object-oriented modelling with unified modelling language 2.0 for simple software application based on agile methodology

    Unified modelling language (UML) 2.0 introduced in 2002 has been developing and influencing object-oriented software engineering and has become a standard and reference for information system analysis and design modelling. There are many concepts and theories to model the information system or software application with UML 2.0, which can make ambiguities and inconsistencies for a novice to learn to how to model the system with UML especially with UML 2.0. This article will discuss how to model the simple software application by using some of the diagrams of UML 2.0 and not by using the whole diagrams as suggested by agile methodology. Agile methodology is considered as convenient for novices because it can deliver the information technology environment to the end-user quickly and adaptively with minimal documentation. It also has the ability to deliver best performance software application according to the customer's needs.     Towards the architecture of an instructional multimedia database

    The applicability of multimedia databases in education may be extended if they can serve multiple target groups, leading to affordable costs per unit for the user. In this contribution, an approach is described to build generic multimedia databases to serve that purpose. This approach is elaborated within the ODB Project ('Instructional Design of an Optical DataBase'); the term optical refers to the use of optical storage media to hold the audiovisual components. The project aims at developing a database in which a hypermedia encyclopedia is combined with instructional multimedia applications for different target groups at different educational levels. The architecture of the Optical Database will allow for switching between application types while working (for instance from tutorial instruction via the encyclopedia to a simulation and back). For instruction, the content of the database is thereby organized around so-called standard instruction routes: one route per target group. In the project, the teacher is regarded as the manager of instruction.\ud \ud From that perspective, the database is primarily organized as a teaching facility. Central to the research is the condition that the architecture of the Optical Database has to enable teachers to select and tailor instruction routes to their needs in a way that is perceived as logical and easy to use

    Multi-layer Architecture For Storing Visual Data Based on WCF and Microsoft SQL Server Database

    In this paper we present a novel architecture for storing visual data. Effective storing, browsing and searching collections of images is one of the most important challenges of computer science. The design of architecture for storing such data requires a set of tools and frameworks such as SQL database management systems and service-oriented frameworks. The proposed solution is based on a multi-layer architecture, which allows to replace any component without recompilation of other components. The approach contains five components, i.e. Model, Base Engine, Concrete Engine, CBIR service and Presentation. They were based on two well-known design patterns: Dependency Injection and Inverse of Control. For experimental purposes we implemented the SURF local interest point detector as a feature extractor and KK-means clustering as indexer.
