Optimisation of a crossdocking distribution centre simulation model
This paper reports on continuing research into the
modelling of an order picking process within a
Crossdocking distribution centre using Simulation
Optimisation. The aim of this project is to optimise a
discrete event simulation model and to understand factors
that affect finding its optimal performance. Our initial
investigation revealed that the precision of the selected
simulation output performance measure and the number of
replications required for the evaluation of the optimisation
objective function through simulation influences the ability
of the optimisation technique. We experimented with
Common Random Numbers, in order to improve the precision of our simulation output performance measure, and intended to use the number of replications utilised for this purpose as the initial number of replications for the optimisation of our Crossdocking distribution centre simulation model. Our results demonstrate that we can improve the precision of our selected simulation output performance measure value using Common Random Numbers at various levels of replications. Furthermore, after optimising our Crossdocking distribution centre simulation model, we are able to achieve optimal performance using fewer simulations runs for the simulation model which uses Common Random Numbers as compared to the simulation model which does not use Common Random Numbers
Assim, a indústria aeronáutica
The Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul business ensures the airworthiness of the aeronautical
components and this business is one of the key partners of the airlines. Due to increased
material costs, unsynchronized processes and system mismatches, it is a greater challenge for
Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul operate effectively and efficiently so they search for new
methodologies, tools and technologies that allow them to innovate and improve their service.
And because of that, the aeronautical industry began to apply the Lean philosophy, however not
all of its tools and methodologies are applicable due to the characteristics of this industry such
as the dynamics, complexity and variability of the maintenance of aeronautical components.
OGMA will have an increase of about 200% for the landing gear overhaul. This master thesis
intends to respond to the need to improve the capacity of the landing gear maintenance area in
OGMA. In order to assure the fulfilment of the contracted times for the landing gear overhaul.
The simulation was the operational research technique applied to model the dynamic behaviour
of the processes and analyse different scenarios without impact the real system, with changes
and investments. The simulation model representative of the current system was developed and
validated in the ARENA software, from which the future system, that imply the increase of
demand, it was described and modelled. Under current conditions, OGMA does not have the
capacity to meet demand with the current level of service. Thus, two models are proposed and
analysed (as a response to demand increase), a model based on process-oriented production
philosophy and another model based on cell production philosophy. The model based on
process-oriented production philosophy best fits the objectives of OGMA. It involves the hiring
of manpower and machine resources, and improve 70% the number of airworthiness landing
gears at the end of the study period and, on average, only 66 days late in deliveries. Other
proposals for improvement are also presented, limitations of the study are identified and other
possible future studies
