Constraint-Based Qualitative Simulation
We consider qualitative simulation involving a finite set of qualitative
relations in presence of complete knowledge about their interrelationship. We
show how it can be naturally captured by means of constraints expressed in
temporal logic and constraint satisfaction problems. The constraints relate at
each stage the 'past' of a simulation with its 'future'. The benefit of this
approach is that it readily leads to an implementation based on constraint
technology that can be used to generate simulations and to answer queries about

Temporal Data Modeling and Reasoning for Information Systems
Temporal knowledge representation and reasoning is a major research field in Artificial
Intelligence, in Database Systems, and in Web and Semantic Web research. The ability to
model and process time and calendar data is essential for many applications like appointment
scheduling, planning, Web services, temporal and active database systems, adaptive
Web applications, and mobile computing applications. This article aims at three complementary
goals. First, to provide with a general background in temporal data modeling
and reasoning approaches. Second, to serve as an orientation guide for further specific
reading. Third, to point to new application fields and research perspectives on temporal
knowledge representation and reasoning in the Web and Semantic Web
TEQUILA: Temporal Question Answering over Knowledge Bases
Question answering over knowledge bases (KB-QA) poses challenges in handling complex questions that need to be decomposed into sub-questions. An important case, addressed here, is that of temporal questions, where cues for temporal relations need to be discovered and handled. We present TEQUILA, an enabler method for temporal QA that can run on top of any KB-QA engine. TEQUILA has four stages. It detects if a question has temporal intent. It decomposes and rewrites the question into non-temporal sub-questions and temporal constraints. Answers to sub-questions are then retrieved from the underlying KB-QA engine. Finally, TEQUILA uses constraint reasoning on temporal intervals to compute final answers to the full question. Comparisons against state-of-the-art baselines show the viability of our method
Case Adaptation with Qualitative Algebras
This paper proposes an approach for the adaptation of spatial or temporal
cases in a case-based reasoning system. Qualitative algebras are used as
spatial and temporal knowledge representation languages. The intuition behind
this adaptation approach is to apply a substitution and then repair potential
inconsistencies, thanks to belief revision on qualitative algebras. A temporal
example from the cooking domain is given. (The paper on which this extended
abstract is based was the recipient of the best paper award of the 2012
International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning.
