    Stigmergy-based modeling to discover urban activity patterns from positioning data

    Positioning data offer a remarkable source of information to analyze crowds urban dynamics. However, discovering urban activity patterns from the emergent behavior of crowds involves complex system modeling. An alternative approach is to adopt computational techniques belonging to the emergent paradigm, which enables self-organization of data and allows adaptive analysis. Specifically, our approach is based on stigmergy. By using stigmergy each sample position is associated with a digital pheromone deposit, which progressively evaporates and aggregates with other deposits according to their spatiotemporal proximity. Based on this principle, we exploit positioning data to identify high density areas (hotspots) and characterize their activity over time. This characterization allows the comparison of dynamics occurring in different days, providing a similarity measure exploitable by clustering techniques. Thus, we cluster days according to their activity behavior, discovering unexpected urban activity patterns. As a case study, we analyze taxi traces in New York City during 2015

    A Force-Directed Approach for Offline GPS Trajectory Map Matching

    We present a novel algorithm to match GPS trajectories onto maps offline (in batch mode) using techniques borrowed from the field of force-directed graph drawing. We consider a simulated physical system where each GPS trajectory is attracted or repelled by the underlying road network via electrical-like forces. We let the system evolve under the action of these physical forces such that individual trajectories are attracted towards candidate roads to obtain a map matching path. Our approach has several advantages compared to traditional, routing-based, algorithms for map matching, including the ability to account for noise and to avoid large detours due to outliers in the data whilst taking into account the underlying topological restrictions (such as one-way roads). Our empirical evaluation using real GPS traces shows that our method produces better map matching results compared to alternative offline map matching algorithms on average, especially for routes in dense, urban areas.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, accepted version of article submitted to ACM SIGSPATIAL 2018, Seattle, US

    Reliable Taxi Ride Sharing System

    Now a day?s everyone is using taxi for riding but when there is a need of taxi we have to wait for a long time so for reducing the efforts a taxi-sharing system is developed that accepts taxi passenger?s real-time ride requests sent from browser and schedules proper taxis to pick up them via ridesharing and monetary constraints. The monetary constraints provide benefits for both passengers and taxi drivers: passengers will not pay more compared with ride and distance and driver will get more profit from this. While this system is beneficial in case of environment such as saving energy consumption. Taxi riders and taxi drivers use the taxi-sharing service provided by the system via browser. In this rider will send request and driver will get acknowledgment. A scheduling process is then performed to select a taxi that satisfies the request with minimum increase in travel distance. A ride request generator is developed in terms of the stochastic process modeling real ride requests learned from the data set. Tested on this platform with extensive experiments, this system demonstrates its efficiency and effectiveness

    A stigmergy-based analysis of city hotspots to discover trends and anomalies in urban transportation usage

    A key aspect of a sustainable urban transportation system is the effectiveness of transportation policies. To be effective, a policy has to consider a broad range of elements, such as pollution emission, traffic flow, and human mobility. Due to the complexity and variability of these elements in the urban area, to produce effective policies remains a very challenging task. With the introduction of the smart city paradigm, a widely available amount of data can be generated in the urban spaces. Such data can be a fundamental source of knowledge to improve policies because they can reflect the sustainability issues underlying the city. In this context, we propose an approach to exploit urban positioning data based on stigmergy, a bio-inspired mechanism providing scalar and temporal aggregation of samples. By employing stigmergy, samples in proximity with each other are aggregated into a functional structure called trail. The trail summarizes relevant dynamics in data and allows matching them, providing a measure of their similarity. Moreover, this mechanism can be specialized to unfold specific dynamics. Specifically, we identify high-density urban areas (i.e hotspots), analyze their activity over time, and unfold anomalies. Moreover, by matching activity patterns, a continuous measure of the dissimilarity with respect to the typical activity pattern is provided. This measure can be used by policy makers to evaluate the effect of policies and change them dynamically.     Social behavior modeling based on Incremental Discrete Hidden Markov Models

In this context, we present a novel approach for human behavior analysis and generation based on what we called "Incremental Discrete Hidden Markov Model" (IDHMM). Joint multimodal activities of interlocutors are first modeled by a set of DHMMs that are specific to supposed joint cognitive states of the interlocutors. Respecting a task-specific syntax, the IDHMM is then built from these DHMMs and split into i) a recognition model that will determine the most likely sequence of cognitive states given the multimodal activity of the in- terlocutor, and ii) a generative model that will compute the most likely activity of the speaker given this estimated sequence of cognitive states. Short-Term Viterbi (STV) decoding is used to incrementally recognize and generate behav- ior. The proposed model is applied to parallel speech and gaze data of interact- ing dyads

    Route Restoration Method for Sparse Taxi GPS trajectory based on Bayesian Network

    In order to improve the availability of taxi GPS big data, we restore the chosen route for the sparse taxi GPS trajectory in this work. A trajectory restoration method based on Bayesian network is proposed. Compared with the traditional research solely based on time-spatial variables, this method additionally considers the characteristics of empty/heavy taxi status, weather conditions, drivers, vehicle running and other factors to carry out route restoration. A field case of grid network in Ningbo is taken to verify the applicability of the method, using the taxi GPS trajectory data from Ningbo Taxi Information Management Platform. The case results show that the accuracy of Bayesian network method based on multiple factors reaches 91.4%. Its performance is superior to the Multivariate logistic regression model. In addition, the proposed method is especially suitable for scenarios with a high missing rate of track data, such as a scene with timespan of about 5 min between neighbour trajectories
