Combining textual and visual information processing for interactive video retrieval: SCHEMA's participation in TRECVID 2004
In this paper, the two different applications based on the Schema Reference System that were developed by the SCHEMA NoE for participation to the search task of TRECVID 2004 are illustrated. The first application, named âSchema-Textâ, is an interactive retrieval application that employs only textual information while the second one, named âSchema-XMâ, is an extension of the former, employing algorithms and
methods for combining textual, visual and higher level information. Two runs for each application were submitted, I A 2 SCHEMA-Text 3, I A 2 SCHEMA-Text 4 for Schema-Text and I A 2 SCHEMA-XM 1, I A 2 SCHEMA-XM 2 for Schema-XM. The comparison of these two applications in terms of retrieval efficiency revealed that the combination of information from different data sources can provide higher efficiency for retrieval systems. Experimental testing additionally revealed that initially performing a text-based query and subsequently proceeding with visual similarity search using one of the returned relevant keyframes as an example image is a good scheme for combining visual and textual information
Advanced content-based semantic scene analysis and information retrieval: the SCHEMA project
The aim of the SCHEMA Network of Excellence is to bring together a critical mass of universities, research centers, industrial partners and end users, in order to design a reference system for content-based semantic scene analysis, interpretation and understanding. Relevant research areas include: content-based multimedia analysis and automatic annotation of semantic multimedia content, combined textual and multimedia information retrieval, semantic -web, MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 standards, user interfaces and human factors. In this paper, recent advances in content-based analysis, indexing and retrieval of digital media within the SCHEMA Network are presented. Multilingual Schema Matching for Wikipedia Infoboxes
Recent research has taken advantage of Wikipedia's multilingualism as a
resource for cross-language information retrieval and machine translation, as
well as proposed techniques for enriching its cross-language structure. The
availability of documents in multiple languages also opens up new opportunities
for querying structured Wikipedia content, and in particular, to enable answers
that straddle different languages. As a step towards supporting such queries,
in this paper, we propose a method for identifying mappings between attributes
from infoboxes that come from pages in different languages. Our approach finds
mappings in a completely automated fashion. Because it does not require
training data, it is scalable: not only can it be used to find mappings between
many language pairs, but it is also effective for languages that are
under-represented and lack sufficient training samples. Another important
benefit of our approach is that it does not depend on syntactic similarity
between attribute names, and thus, it can be applied to language pairs that
have distinct morphologies. We have performed an extensive experimental
evaluation using a corpus consisting of pages in Portuguese, Vietnamese, and
English. The results show that not only does our approach obtain high precision
and recall, but it also outperforms state-of-the-art techniques. We also
present a case study which demonstrates that the multilingual mappings we
derive lead to substantial improvements in answer quality and coverage for
structured queries over Wikipedia content.Comment: VLDB201
Generic Subsequence Matching Framework: Modularity, Flexibility, Efficiency
Subsequence matching has appeared to be an ideal approach for solving many
problems related to the fields of data mining and similarity retrieval. It has
been shown that almost any data class (audio, image, biometrics, signals) is or
can be represented by some kind of time series or string of symbols, which can
be seen as an input for various subsequence matching approaches. The variety of
data types, specific tasks and their partial or full solutions is so wide that
the choice, implementation and parametrization of a suitable solution for a
given task might be complicated and time-consuming; a possibly fruitful
combination of fragments from different research areas may not be obvious nor
easy to realize. The leading authors of this field also mention the
implementation bias that makes difficult a proper comparison of competing
approaches. Therefore we present a new generic Subsequence Matching Framework
(SMF) that tries to overcome the aforementioned problems by a uniform frame
that simplifies and speeds up the design, development and evaluation of
subsequence matching related systems. We identify several relatively separate
subtasks solved differently over the literature and SMF enables to combine them
in straightforward manner achieving new quality and efficiency. This framework
can be used in many application domains and its components can be reused
effectively. Its strictly modular architecture and openness enables also
involvement of efficient solutions from different fields, for instance

Towards information profiling: data lake content metadata management
There is currently a burst of Big Data (BD) processed and stored in huge raw data repositories, commonly called Data Lakes (DL). These BD require new techniques of data integration and schema alignment in order to make the data usable by its consumers and to discover the relationships linking their content. This can be provided by metadata services which discover and describe their content. However, there is currently a lack of a systematic approach for such kind of metadata discovery and management. Thus, we propose a framework for the profiling of informational content stored in the DL, which we call information profiling. The profiles are stored as metadata to support data analysis. We formally define a metadata management process which identifies the key activities required to effectively handle this.We demonstrate the alternative techniques and performance of our process using a prototype implementation handling a real-life case-study from the OpenML DL, which showcases the value and feasibility of our approach.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
An MPEG-7 scheme for semantic content modelling and filtering of digital video
Abstract Part 5 of the MPEG-7 standard specifies Multimedia Description Schemes (MDS); that is, the format multimedia content models should conform to in order to ensure interoperability across multiple platforms and applications. However, the standard does not specify how the content or the associated model may be filtered. This paper proposes an MPEG-7 scheme which can be deployed for digital video content modelling and filtering. The proposed scheme, COSMOS-7, produces rich and multi-faceted semantic content models and supports a content-based filtering approach that only analyses content relating directly to the preferred content requirements of the user. Visual Information Retrieval in Digital Libraries
The emergence of information highways and multimedia computing has resulted in redefining the concept of libraries. It is widely believed that in the next few years, a significant portion of information in libraries will be in the form of multimedia electronic documents. Many approaches are being proposed for storing, retrieving, assimilating, harvesting, and prospecting information from these multimedia documents. Digital libraries are expected to allow users to access information independent of the locations and types of data sources and will provide a unified picture of information. In this paper, we discuss requirements of these emerging information systems and present query methods and data models for these systems.
