    Shorter tours and longer detours: Uniform covers and a bit beyond

    Motivated by the well known four-thirds conjecture for the traveling salesman problem (TSP), we study the problem of {\em uniform covers}. A graph G=(V,E)G=(V,E) has an α\alpha-uniform cover for TSP (2EC, respectively) if the everywhere α\alpha vector (i.e. {α}E\{\alpha\}^{E}) dominates a convex combination of incidence vectors of tours (2-edge-connected spanning multigraphs, respectively). The polyhedral analysis of Christofides' algorithm directly implies that a 3-edge-connected, cubic graph has a 1-uniform cover for TSP. Seb\H{o} asked if such graphs have (1ϵ)(1-\epsilon)-uniform covers for TSP for some ϵ>0\epsilon > 0. Indeed, the four-thirds conjecture implies that such graphs have 8/9-uniform covers. We show that these graphs have 18/19-uniform covers for TSP. We also study uniform covers for 2EC and show that the everywhere 15/17 vector can be efficiently written as a convex combination of 2-edge-connected spanning multigraphs. For a weighted, 3-edge-connected, cubic graph, our results show that if the everywhere 2/3 vector is an optimal solution for the subtour linear programming relaxation, then a tour with weight at most 27/19 times that of an optimal tour can be found efficiently. Node-weighted, 3-edge-connected, cubic graphs fall into this category. In this special case, we can apply our tools to obtain an even better approximation guarantee. To extend our approach to input graphs that are 2-edge-connected, we present a procedure to decompose an optimal solution for the subtour relaxation for TSP into spanning, connected multigraphs that cover each 2-edge cut an even number of times. Using this decomposition, we obtain a 17/12-approximation algorithm for minimum weight 2-edge-connected spanning subgraphs on subcubic, node-weighted graphs

    Small Cuts and Connectivity Certificates: A Fault Tolerant Approach

    We revisit classical connectivity problems in the {CONGEST} model of distributed computing. By using techniques from fault tolerant network design, we show improved constructions, some of which are even "local" (i.e., with O~(1) rounds) for problems that are closely related to hard global problems (i.e., with a lower bound of Omega(Diam+sqrt{n}) rounds). Distributed Minimum Cut: Nanongkai and Su presented a randomized algorithm for computing a (1+epsilon)-approximation of the minimum cut using O~(D +sqrt{n}) rounds where D is the diameter of the graph. For a sufficiently large minimum cut lambda=Omega(sqrt{n}), this is tight due to Das Sarma et al. [FOCS \u2711], Ghaffari and Kuhn [DISC \u2713]. - Small Cuts: A special setting that remains open is where the graph connectivity lambda is small (i.e., constant). The only lower bound for this case is Omega(D), with a matching bound known only for lambda <= 2 due to Pritchard and Thurimella [TALG \u2711]. Recently, Daga, Henzinger, Nanongkai and Saranurak [STOC \u2719] raised the open problem of computing the minimum cut in poly(D) rounds for any lambda=O(1). In this paper, we resolve this problem by presenting a surprisingly simple algorithm, that takes a completely different approach than the existing algorithms. Our algorithm has also the benefit that it computes all minimum cuts in the graph, and naturally extends to vertex cuts as well. At the heart of the algorithm is a graph sampling approach usually used in the context of fault tolerant (FT) design. - Deterministic Algorithms: While the existing distributed minimum cut algorithms are randomized, our algorithm can be made deterministic within the same round complexity. To obtain this, we introduce a novel definition of universal sets along with their efficient computation. This allows us to derandomize the FT graph sampling technique, which might be of independent interest. - Computation of all Edge Connectivities: We also consider the more general task of computing the edge connectivity of all the edges in the graph. In the output format, it is required that the endpoints u,v of every edge (u,v) learn the cardinality of the u-v cut in the graph. We provide the first sublinear algorithm for this problem for the case of constant connectivity values. Specifically, by using the recent notion of low-congestion cycle cover, combined with the sampling technique, we compute all edge connectivities in poly(D) * 2^{O(sqrt{log n log log n})} rounds. Sparse Certificates: For an n-vertex graph G and an integer lambda, a lambda-sparse certificate H is a subgraph H subseteq G with O(lambda n) edges which is lambda-connected iff G is lambda-connected. For D-diameter graphs, constructions of sparse certificates for lambda in {2,3} have been provided by Thurimella [J. Alg. \u2797] and Dori [PODC \u2718] respectively using O~(D) number of rounds. The problem of devising such certificates with o(D+sqrt{n}) rounds was left open by Dori [PODC \u2718] for any lambda >= 4. Using connections to fault tolerant spanners, we considerably improve the round complexity for any lambda in [1,n] and epsilon in (0,1), by showing a construction of (1-epsilon)lambda-sparse certificates with O(lambda n) edges using only O(1/epsilon^2 * log^{2+o(1)} n) rounds

    On the Size and the Approximability of Minimum Temporally Connected Subgraphs

    We consider temporal graphs with discrete time labels and investigate the size and the approximability of minimum temporally connected spanning subgraphs. We present a family of minimally connected temporal graphs with nn vertices and Ω(n2)\Omega(n^2) edges, thus resolving an open question of (Kempe, Kleinberg, Kumar, JCSS 64, 2002) about the existence of sparse temporal connectivity certificates. Next, we consider the problem of computing a minimum weight subset of temporal edges that preserve connectivity of a given temporal graph either from a given vertex r (r-MTC problem) or among all vertex pairs (MTC problem). We show that the approximability of r-MTC is closely related to the approximability of Directed Steiner Tree and that r-MTC can be solved in polynomial time if the underlying graph has bounded treewidth. We also show that the best approximation ratio for MTC is at least O(2log1ϵn)O(2^{\log^{1-\epsilon} n}) and at most O(min{n1+ϵ,(ΔM)2/3+ϵ})O(\min\{n^{1+\epsilon}, (\Delta M)^{2/3+\epsilon}\}), for any constant ϵ>0\epsilon > 0, where MM is the number of temporal edges and Δ\Delta is the maximum degree of the underlying graph. Furthermore, we prove that the unweighted version of MTC is APX-hard and that MTC is efficiently solvable in trees and 22-approximable in cycles

    Bidimensionality and EPTAS

    Bidimensionality theory is a powerful framework for the development of metaalgorithmic techniques. It was introduced by Demaine et al. as a tool to obtain sub-exponential time parameterized algorithms for problems on H-minor free graphs. Demaine and Hajiaghayi extended the theory to obtain PTASs for bidimensional problems, and subsequently improved these results to EPTASs. Fomin et. al related the theory to the existence of linear kernels for parameterized problems. In this paper we revisit bidimensionality theory from the perspective of approximation algorithms and redesign the framework for obtaining EPTASs to be more powerful, easier to apply and easier to understand. Two of the most widely used approaches to obtain PTASs on planar graphs are the Lipton-Tarjan separator based approach, and Baker's approach. Demaine and Hajiaghayi strengthened both approaches using bidimensionality and obtained EPTASs for a multitude of problems. We unify the two strenghtened approaches to combine the best of both worlds. At the heart of our framework is a decomposition lemma which states that for "most" bidimensional problems, there is a polynomial time algorithm which given an H-minor-free graph G as input and an e > 0 outputs a vertex set X of size e * OPT such that the treewidth of G n X is f(e). Here, OPT is the objective function value of the problem in question and f is a function depending only on e. This allows us to obtain EPTASs on (apex)-minor-free graphs for all problems covered by the previous framework, as well as for a wide range of packing problems, partial covering problems and problems that are neither closed under taking minors, nor contractions. To the best of our knowledge for many of these problems including cycle packing, vertex-h-packing, maximum leaf spanning tree, and partial r-dominating set no EPTASs on planar graphs were previously known
