Multi-man flight simulator
A prototype Air Traffic Control facility and multiman flight simulator facility was designed and one of the component simulators fabricated as a proof of concept. The facility was designed to provide a number of independent simple simulator cabs that would have the capability of some local, stand alone processing that would in turn interface with a larger host computer. The system can accommodate up to eight flight simulators (commercially available instrument trainers) which could be operated stand alone if no graphics were required or could operate in a common simulated airspace if connected to the host computer. A proposed addition to the original design is the capability of inputing pilot inputs and quantities displayed on the flight and navigation instruments to the microcomputer when the simulator operates in the stand alone mode to allow independent use of these commercially available instrument trainers for research. The conceptual design of the system and progress made to date on its implementation are described

Challenges of security and trust of mobile devices as digital avionics component
Mobile devices are becoming part of modern digital avionics. Mobile devices
can be applied to a range of scenarios, from Electronic Flight Bags to
maintenance platforms, in order to manage and configure flight information,
configure avionics networks or perform maintenance tasks (including offloading
flight logs). It can be argued that recent developments show an increased use
of personal mobile devices playing an integral part in the digital avionics
industry. In this paper, we look into different proposals for integrating
mobile devices with various avionics networks -- either as part of the Bring
Your Own Device (BYOD) or Corporate Owned Personally Enabled (COPE) paradigms.
Furthermore, we will evaluate the security and trust challenges presented by
these devices in their respective domains. This analysis will also include the
issues related to communication between the mobile device and the aircraft
network via either wired or wireless channels. Finally, the paper puts forward
a set of guidelines with regards to the security and trust issues that might be

A preliminary definition and assessment of a suitable multiprocessor architecture for such applications is developed
Advanced flight deck/crew station simulator functional requirements
This report documents a study of flight deck/crew system research facility requirements for investigating issues involved with developing systems, and procedures for interfacing transport aircraft with air traffic control systems planned for 1985 to 2000. Crew system needs of NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and industry were investigated and reported. A matrix of these is included, as are recommended functional requirements and design criteria for simulation facilities in which to conduct this research. Methods of exploiting the commonality and similarity in facilities are identified, and plans for exploiting this in order to reduce implementation costs and allow efficient transfer of experiments from one facility to another are presented

Wireless communication, identification and sensing technologies enabling integrated logistics: a study in the harbor environment
In the last decade, integrated logistics has become an important challenge in
the development of wireless communication, identification and sensing
technology, due to the growing complexity of logistics processes and the
increasing demand for adapting systems to new requirements. The advancement of
wireless technology provides a wide range of options for the maritime container
terminals. Electronic devices employed in container terminals reduce the manual
effort, facilitating timely information flow and enhancing control and quality
of service and decision made. In this paper, we examine the technology that can
be used to support integration in harbor's logistics. In the literature, most
systems have been developed to address specific needs of particular harbors,
but a systematic study is missing. The purpose is to provide an overview to the
reader about which technology of integrated logistics can be implemented and
what remains to be addressed in the future
