    Mining association rules for admission control and service differentiation in e-commerce applications

    Workload demands in e-commerce applications are very dynamic in nature, therefore it is essential for internet service providers to manage server resources effectively to maximise total revenue in server overloading situations. In this paper, a data mining technique is applied to a typical e-commerce application model for identification of composite association rules that capture user navigation patterns. Two algorithms are then developed based on the derived rules for admission control, service differentiation and priority scheduling. Our approach takes the following into consideration: a) only final purchase requests result in company revenue; b) any other request can potentially lead to a final purchase, depending upon the likelihood of the navigation sequence that starts from current request and leads to final purchase; c) service differentiation and priority assignment are based on aggregated confidence and average support of the composite association rules. As identification of composite association rules and computation of confidence and support of the rules can be pre-computed offline, the proposed approach incurs minimum performance overheads. The evaluation results suggest that the proposed approach is effective in terms of request management for revenue maximisation

    A Meta-learning based Stacked Regression Approach for Customer Lifetime Value Prediction

    Companies across the globe are keen on targeting potential high-value customers in an attempt to expand revenue and this could be achieved only by understanding the customers more. Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) is the total monetary value of transactions/purchases made by a customer with the business over an intended period of time and is used as means to estimate future customer interactions. CLV finds application in a number of distinct business domains such as Banking, Insurance, Online-entertainment, Gaming, and E-Commerce. The existing distribution-based and basic (recency, frequency & monetary) based models face a limitation in terms of handling a wide variety of input features. Moreover, the more advanced Deep learning approaches could be superfluous and add an undesirable element of complexity in certain application areas. We, therefore, propose a system which is able to qualify both as effective, and comprehensive yet simple and interpretable. With that in mind, we develop a meta-learning-based stacked regression model which combines the predictions from bagging and boosting models that each is found to perform well individually. Empirical tests have been carried out on an openly available Online Retail dataset to evaluate various models and show the efficacy of the proposed approach.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

    Predictive Customer Lifetime value modeling: Improving customer engagement and business performance

    CookUnity, a meal subscription service, has witnessed substantial annual revenue growth over the past three years. However, this growth has primarily been driven by the acquisition of new users to expand the customer base, rather than an evident increase in customers' spending levels. If it weren't for the raised subscription prices, the company's customer lifetime value (CLV) would have remained the same as it was three years ago. Consequently, the company's leadership recognizes the need to adopt a holistic approach to unlock an enhancement in CLV. The objective of this thesis is to develop a comprehensive understanding of CLV, its implications, and how companies leverage it to inform strategic decisions. Throughout the course of this study, our central focus is to deliver a fully functional and efficient machine learning solution to CookUnity. This solution will possess exceptional predictive capabilities, enabling accurate forecasting of each customer's future CLV. By equipping CookUnity with this powerful tool, our aim is to empower the company to strategically leverage CLV for sustained growth. To achieve this objective, we analyze various methodologies and approaches to CLV analysis, evaluating their applicability and effectiveness within the context of CookUnity. We thoroughly explore available data sources that can serve as predictors of CLV, ensuring the incorporation of the most relevant and meaningful variables in our model. Additionally, we assess different research methodologies to identify the top-performing approach and examine its implications for implementation at CookUnity. By implementing data-driven strategies based on our predictive CLV model, CookUnity will be able to optimize order levels and maximize the lifetime value of its customer base. The outcome of this thesis will be a robust ML solution with remarkable prediction accuracy and practical usability within the company. Furthermore, the insights gained from our research will contribute to a broader understanding of CLV in the subscription-based business context, stimulating further exploration and advancement in this field of study

    Analyzing Granger causality in climate data with time series classification methods

    Attribution studies in climate science aim for scientifically ascertaining the influence of climatic variations on natural or anthropogenic factors. Many of those studies adopt the concept of Granger causality to infer statistical cause-effect relationships, while utilizing traditional autoregressive models. In this article, we investigate the potential of state-of-the-art time series classification techniques to enhance causal inference in climate science. We conduct a comparative experimental study of different types of algorithms on a large test suite that comprises a unique collection of datasets from the area of climate-vegetation dynamics. The results indicate that specialized time series classification methods are able to improve existing inference procedures. Substantial differences are observed among the methods that were tested
