Efficient Broadcasting in Self-Organizing Multi-Hop Wireless Networks.
International audienceMulti-hop wireless networks (such as ad-hoc or sensor networks) consist of sets of mobile nodes without the support of a pre-existing fixed infrastructure. For the purpose of scalability, ad-hoc and sensor networks may both need to be organized into clusters and require some protocols to perform common global communication patterns and particularly for broadcasting. In a broadcasting task, a source node needs to send the same message to all the nodes in the network. Some desirable properties of a scalable broadcasting are energy and bandwidth efficiency, \emph{i.e.}, message retransmissions should be minimized. In this paper, we propose to take advantage of the characteristics of a previous clustered structure to extend it to an efficient and scalable broadcasting structure. In this way, we build only one structure for both operations (organizing and broadcasting) by applying a distributed clustering algorithm. Our broadcasting improve the number of retransmissions as compared to existing solutions

Overlapping Multi-hop Clustering for Wireless Sensor Networks
Clustering is a standard approach for achieving efficient and scalable
performance in wireless sensor networks. Traditionally, clustering algorithms
aim at generating a number of disjoint clusters that satisfy some criteria. In
this paper, we formulate a novel clustering problem that aims at generating
overlapping multi-hop clusters. Overlapping clusters are useful in many sensor
network applications, including inter-cluster routing, node localization, and
time synchronization protocols. We also propose a randomized, distributed
multi-hop clustering algorithm (KOCA) for solving the overlapping clustering
problem. KOCA aims at generating connected overlapping clusters that cover the
entire sensor network with a specific average overlapping degree. Through
analysis and simulation experiments we show how to select the different values
of the parameters to achieve the clustering process objectives. Moreover, the
results show that KOCA produces approximately equal-sized clusters, which
allows distributing the load evenly over different clusters. In addition, KOCA
is scalable; the clustering formation terminates in a constant time regardless
of the network size
Unified clustering and communication protocol for wireless sensor networks
In this paper we present an energy-efficient cross layer protocol for providing application specific reservations in wireless senor networks called the “Unified Clustering and Communication Protocol ” (UCCP). Our modular cross layered framework satisfies three wireless sensor network requirements, namely, the QoS requirement of heterogeneous applications, energy aware clustering and data forwarding by relay sensor nodes. Our unified design approach is motivated by providing an integrated and viable solution for self organization and end-to-end communication is wireless sensor networks. Dynamic QoS based reservation guarantees are provided using a reservation-based TDMA approach. Our novel energy-efficient clustering approach employs a multi-objective optimization technique based on OR (operations research) practices. We adopt a simple hierarchy in which relay nodes forward data messages from cluster head to the sink, thus eliminating the overheads needed to maintain a routing protocol. Simulation results demonstrate that UCCP provides an energy-efficient and scalable solution to meet the application specific QoS demands in resource constrained sensor nodes. Multimedia Content Distribution in Hybrid Wireless Networks using Weighted Clustering
Fixed infrastructured networks naturally support centralized approaches for
group management and information provisioning. Contrary to infrastructured
networks, in multi-hop ad-hoc networks each node acts as a router as well as
sender and receiver. Some applications, however, requires hierarchical
arrangements that-for practical reasons-has to be done locally and
self-organized. An additional challenge is to deal with mobility that causes
permanent network partitioning and re-organizations. Technically, these
problems can be tackled by providing additional uplinks to a backbone network,
which can be used to access resources in the Internet as well as to inter-link
multiple ad-hoc network partitions, creating a hybrid wireless network. In this
paper, we present a prototypically implemented hybrid wireless network system
optimized for multimedia content distribution. To efficiently manage the ad-hoc
communicating devices a weighted clustering algorithm is introduced. The
proposed localized algorithm deals with mobility, but does not require
geographical information or distances.Comment: 2nd ACM Workshop on Wireless Multimedia Networking and Performance

Distributed Clustering in Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc Networks Using Soft-Constraint Affinity Propagation
Absence of network infrastructure and heterogeneous spectrum availability in cognitive radio ad hoc networks (CRAHNs) necessitate the self-organization of cognitive radio users (CRs) for efficient spectrum coordination. The cluster-based structure is known to be effective in both guaranteeing system performance and reducing communication overhead in variable network environment. In this paper, we propose a distributed clustering algorithm based on soft-constraint affinity propagation message passing model (DCSCAP). Without dependence on predefined common control channel (CCC), DCSCAP relies on the distributed message passing among CRs through their available channels, making the algorithm applicable for large scale networks. Different from original soft-constraint affinity propagation algorithm, the maximal iterations of message passing is controlled to a relatively small number to accommodate to the dynamic environment of CRAHNs. Based on the accumulated evidence for clustering from the message passing process, clusters are formed with the objective of grouping the CRs with similar spectrum availability into smaller number of clusters while guaranteeing at least one CCC in each cluster. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the preference of DCSCAP compared with existing algorithms in both efficiency and robustness of the clusters
