Refined a posteriori error estimation for classical and pressure-robust Stokes finite element methods
Recent works showed that pressure-robust modifications of mixed finite
element methods for the Stokes equations outperform their standard versions in
many cases. This is achieved by divergence-free reconstruction operators and
results in pressure independent velocity error estimates which are robust with
respect to small viscosities. In this paper we develop a posteriori error
control which reflects this robustness.
The main difficulty lies in the volume contribution of the standard
residual-based approach that includes the -norm of the right-hand side.
However, the velocity is only steered by the divergence-free part of this
source term. An efficient error estimator must approximate this divergence-free
part in a proper manner, otherwise it can be dominated by the pressure error.
To overcome this difficulty a novel approach is suggested that uses arguments
from the stream function and vorticity formulation of the Navier--Stokes
equations. The novel error estimators only take the of the
right-hand side into account and so lead to provably reliable, efficient and
pressure-independent upper bounds in case of a pressure-robust method in
particular in pressure-dominant situations. This is also confirmed by some
numerical examples with the novel pressure-robust modifications of the
Taylor--Hood and mini finite element methods
Multigrid waveform relaxation for the time-fractional heat equation
In this work, we propose an efficient and robust multigrid method for solving
the time-fractional heat equation. Due to the nonlocal property of fractional
differential operators, numerical methods usually generate systems of equations
for which the coefficient matrix is dense. Therefore, the design of efficient
solvers for the numerical simulation of these problems is a difficult task. We
develop a parallel-in-time multigrid algorithm based on the waveform relaxation
approach, whose application to time-fractional problems seems very natural due
to the fact that the fractional derivative at each spatial point depends on the
values of the function at this point at all earlier times. Exploiting the
Toeplitz-like structure of the coefficient matrix, the proposed multigrid
waveform relaxation method has a computational cost of
operations, where is the number of time steps and is the number of
spatial grid points. A semi-algebraic mode analysis is also developed to
theoretically confirm the good results obtained. Several numerical experiments,
including examples with non-smooth solutions and a nonlinear problem with
applications in porous media, are presented
A robust high-sensitivity algorithm for automated detection of proteins in two-dimensional electrophoresis gels
The automated interpretation of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis images used in protein separation and analysis presents a formidable problem in the detection and characterization of ill-defined spatial objects. We describe in this paper a hierarchical algorithm that provides a robust, high-sensitivity solution to this problem, which can be easily adapted to a variety of experimental situations. The software implementation of this algorithm functions as part of a complete package designed for general protein gel analysis applications
