IVOA Recommendation: Simple Cone Search Version 1.03
This specification defines a simple query protocol for retrieving records
from a catalog of astronomical sources. The query describes sky position and an
angular distance, defining a cone on the sky. The response returns a list of
astronomical sources from the catalog whose positions lie within the cone,
formatted as a VOTable. This version of the specification is essentially a
transcription of the original Cone Search specification in order to move it
into the IVOA standardization process
McSweeney's and the challenges of the marketplace for independent publishing
In their article "McSweeney's and the Challenges of the Marketplace for Independent Publishing" Katrien Bollen, Stef Craps, and Pieter Vermeulen argue that the artistic projects of the US-American author, activist, and editor Dave Eggers are marked by a tension between the desire for independence and the demands of brand-building. The article offers a close analysis of the materiality and paratexts of one particular issue of McSweeney's, the literary magazine of which Eggers is the founding editor. Both the content and the apologetically aggressive tone of Eggers's editorial statements betray a deep unease with the inability to inhabit a cultural and economic position that is untainted by the compromises that publishing requires. Still, this disavowed complicity with the market in fact sustains Eggers's editorial practice in McSweeney's, which, in marked contrast to his explicit statements, thrives on a dynamic of commodification
An Auction Market for Journal Articles
Economic articles are published very slowly. We believe this results mainly from the poor incentives referees face. We recommend that an auction market replace the current system for submitting papers and demonstrate a strict Pareto-improvement of equilibrium. Besides the benefits of speed, this mechanism increases the average quality of articles and journals and rewards editors and referees for their effort. In addition, the "academic dollars" for papers sold at auction go to the authors, editors and referees of cited articles. This income indicates academic productivity (facilitating decisions on tenure and promotion); its recirculation to journals further stimulates quality competition.Academic Journals;Academic Productivity;Market Design.
