Energy Efficiency and Emission Testing for Connected and Automated Vehicles Using Real-World Driving Data
By using the onboard sensing and external connectivity technology, connected
and automated vehicles (CAV) could lead to improved energy efficiency, better
routing, and lower traffic congestion. With the rapid development of the
technology and adaptation of CAV, it is more critical to develop the universal
evaluation method and the testing standard which could evaluate the impacts on
energy consumption and environmental pollution of CAV fairly, especially under
the various traffic conditions. In this paper, we proposed a new method and
framework to evaluate the energy efficiency and emission of the vehicle based
on the unsupervised learning methods. Both the real-world driving data of the
evaluated vehicle and the large naturalistic driving dataset are used to
perform the driving primitive analysis and coupling. Then the linear weighted
estimation method could be used to calculate the testing result of the
evaluated vehicle. The results show that this method can successfully identify
the typical driving primitives. The couples of the driving primitives from the
evaluated vehicle and the typical driving primitives from the large real-world
driving dataset coincide with each other very well. This new method could
enhance the standard development of the energy efficiency and emission testing
of CAV and other off-cycle credits
Synergizing Roadway Infrastructure Investment with Digital Infrastructure for Infrastructure-Based Connected Vehicle Applications: Review of Current Status and Future Directions

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.The safety, mobility, environmental and economic benefits of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) are potentially dramatic. However, realization of these benefits largely hinges on the timely upgrading of the existing transportation system. CAVs must be enabled to send and receive data to and from other vehicles and drivers (V2V communication) and to and from infrastructure (V2I communication). Further, infrastructure and the transportation agencies that manage it must be able to collect, process, distribute and archive these data quickly, reliably, and securely. This paper focuses on current digital roadway infrastructure initiatives and highlights the importance of including digital infrastructure investment alongside more traditional infrastructure investment to keep up with the auto industry's push towards this real time communication and data processing capability. Agencies responsible for transportation infrastructure construction and management must collaborate, establishing national and international platforms to guide the planning, deployment and management of digital infrastructure in their jurisdictions. This will help create standardized interoperable national and international systems so that CAV technology is not deployed in a haphazard and uncoordinated manner

Eco-Driving Optimization Based on Variable Grid Dynamic Programming and Vehicle Connectivity in a Real-World Scenario
In a context in which the connectivity level of last-generation vehicles is constantly onthe rise, the combined use of Vehicle-To-Everything (V2X) connectivity and autonomous drivingcan provide remarkable benefits through the synergistic optimization of the route and the speedtrajectory. In this framework, this paper focuses on vehicle ecodriving optimization in a connectedenvironment: the virtual test rig of a premium segment passenger car was used for generatingthe simulation scenarios and to assess the benefits, in terms of energy and time savings, that theintroduction of V2X communication, integrated with cloud computing, can have in a real-worldscenario. The Reference Scenario is a predefined Real Driving Emissions (RDE) compliant route,while the simulation scenarios were generated by assuming two different penetration levels of V2Xtechnologies. The associated energy minimization problem was formulated and solved by means of aVariable Grid Dynamic Programming (VGDP), that modifying the variable state search grid on thebasis of the V2X information allows to drastically reduce the DP computation burden by more than95%. The simulations show that introducing a smart infrastructure along with optimizing the vehiclespeed in a real-world urban route can potentially reduce the required energy by 54% while shorteningthe travel time by 38%. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was performed on the biobjective optimizationcost function to find a set of Pareto optimal solutions, between energy and travel time minimization
Impacts of Connected and Automated Vehicles on Energy and Traffic Flow: Optimal Control Design and Verification Through Field Testing
This dissertation assesses eco-driving effectiveness in several key traffic scenarios that include passenger vehicle transportation in highway driving and urban driving that also includes interactions with traffic signals, as well as heavy-duty line-haul truck transportation in highway driving with significant road grade. These studies are accomplished through both traffic microsimulation that propagates individual vehicle interactions to synthesize large-scale traffic patterns that emerge from the eco-driving strategies, and through experimentation in which real prototyped connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are utilized to directly measure energy benefits from the designed eco-driving control strategies. In particular, vehicle-in-the-loop is leveraged for the CAVs driven on a physical test track to interact with surrounding traffic that is virtually realized through said microsimulation software in real time. In doing so, model predictive control is designed and implemented to create performative eco-driving policies and to select vehicle lane, as well as enforce safety constraints while autonomously driving a real vehicle. Ultimately, eco-driving policies are both simulated and experimentally vetted in a variety of typical driving scenarios to show up to a 50% boost in fuel economy when switching to CAV drivers without compromising traffic flow.
The first part of this dissertation specifically assesses energy efficiency of connected and automated passenger vehicles that exploit intention-sharing sourced from both neighboring vehicles in a highway scene and from traffic lights in an urban scene. Linear model predictive control is implemented for CAV motion planning, whereby chance constraints are introduced to balance between traffic compactness and safety, and integer decision variables are introduced for lane selection and collision avoidance in multi-lane environments. Validation results are shown from both large-scale microsimulation and through experimentation of real prototyped CAVs. The second part of this dissertation then assesses energy efficiency of automated line-haul trucks when tasked to aerodynamically platoon. Nonlinear model predictive control is implemented for motion planning, and simulation and experimentation are conducted for platooning verification under highway conditions with traffic. Then, interaction-aware and intention-sharing cooperative control is further introduced to eliminate experimentally measured platoon disengagements that occur on real highways when using only status-sharing control. Finally, the performance of automated drivers versus human drivers are compared in a point-to-point scenario to verify fundamental eco-driving impacts -- experimentally showing eco-driving to boost energy economy by 11% on average even in simple driving scenarios

Social Equity Impacts of Congestion Management Strategies
This white paper examines the social equity impacts of various congestion management strategies. The paper includes a comprehensive list of 30 congestion management strategies and a discussion of equity implications related to each strategy. The authors analyze existing literature and incorporate findings from 12 expert interviews from academic, non-governmental organization (NGO), public, and private sector respondents to strengthen results and fill gaps in understanding. The literature review applies the Spatial – Temporal – Economic – Physiological – Social (STEPS) Equity Framework (Shaheen et al., 2017) to identify impacts and classify whether social equity barriers are reduced, exacerbated, or both by a particular congestion mitigation measure. The congestion management strategies discussed are grouped into six main categories, including: 1) pricing, 2) parking and curb policies, 3) operational strategies, 4) infrastructure changes, 5) transportation services and strategies, and 6) conventional taxation. The findings show that the social equity impacts of certain congestion management strategies are not well understood, at present, and further empirical research is needed. Congestion mitigation measures have the potential to affect travel costs, commute times, housing, and accessibility in ways that are distinctly positive or negative for different populations. For these reasons, social equity implications of congestion management strategies should be understood and mitigated for in planning and implementation of these strategies
