Replica Selection in the Globus Data Grid
The Globus Data Grid architecture provides a scalable infrastructure for the
management of storage resources and data that are distributed across Grid
environments. These services are designed to support a variety of scientific
applications, ranging from high-energy physics to computational genomics, that
require access to large amounts of data (terabytes or even petabytes) with
varied quality of service requirements. By layering on a set of core services,
such as data transport, security, and replica cataloging, one can construct
various higher-level services. In this paper, we discuss the design and
implementation of a high-level replica selection service that uses information
regarding replica location and user preferences to guide selection from among
storage replica alternatives. We first present a basic replica selection
service design, then show how dynamic information collected using Globus
information service capabilities concerning storage system properties can help
improve and optimize the selection process. We demonstrate the use of Condor's
ClassAds resource description and matchmaking mechanism as an efficient tool
for representing and matching storage resource capabilities and policies
against application requirements.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Extending the data dictionary for data/knowledge management
Current relational database technology provides the means for efficiently storing and retrieving large amounts of data. By combining techniques learned from the field of artificial intelligence with this technology, it is possible to expand the capabilities of such systems. This paper suggests using the expanded domain concept, an object-oriented organization, and the storing of knowledge rules within the relational database as a solution to the unique problems associated with CAD/CAM and engineering data
Report of the LSPI/NASA Workshop on Lunar Base Methodology Development
Groundwork was laid for computer models which will assist in the design of a manned lunar base. The models, herein described, will provide the following functions for the successful conclusion of that task: strategic planning; sensitivity analyses; impact analyses; and documentation. Topics addressed include: upper level model description; interrelationship matrix; user community; model features; model descriptions; system implementation; model management; and plans for future action
The AliEn system, status and perspectives
AliEn is a production environment that implements several components of the
Grid paradigm needed to simulate, reconstruct and analyse HEP data in a
distributed way. The system is built around Open Source components, uses the
Web Services model and standard network protocols to implement the computing
platform that is currently being used to produce and analyse Monte Carlo data
at over 30 sites on four continents. The aim of this paper is to present the
current AliEn architecture and outline its future developments in the light of
emerging standards.Comment: Talk from the 2003 Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics

Space and surface power for the space exploration initiative: Results from project outreach
The analysis and evaluations of the Space and Surface Power panel, one of eight panels created by RAND to screen and analyze submissions to the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) Outreach Program, is documented. In addition to managing and evaluating the responses, or submissions, to this public outreach program, RAND conducted its own analysis and evaluation relevent to SEI mission concepts, systems, and technologies. The Power panel screened and analyzed submissions for which a substantial portion of the concepts involved power generation sources, transmission, distribution, thermal management, and handling of power (including conditioning, conversion, packaging, and enhancements in system components). A background discussion of the areas the Power panel covered and the issues the reviewers considered pertinent to the analysis of power submissions are presented. An overview of each of the highest-ranked submissions and then a discussion of these submissions is presented. The results of the analysis is presented

IAC user manual
The User Manual for the Integrated Analysis Capability (IAC) Level 1 system is presented. The IAC system currently supports the thermal, structures, controls and system dynamics technologies, and its development is influenced by the requirements for design/analysis of large space systems. The system has many features which make it applicable to general problems in engineering, and to management of data and software. Information includes basic IAC operation, executive commands, modules, solution paths, data organization and storage, IAC utilities, and module implementation
Generating collaborative systems for digital libraries: A model-driven approach
This is an open access article shared under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Licence (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/). Copyright @ 2010 The Authors. The design and development of a digital library involves different stakeholders, such as: information architects, librarians, and domain experts, who need to agree on a common language to describe, discuss, and negotiate the services the library has to offer. To this end, high-level, language-neutral models have to be devised. Metamodeling techniques favor the definition of domainspecific visual languages through which stakeholders can share their views and directly manipulate representations of the domain entities. This paper describes CRADLE (Cooperative-Relational Approach to Digital Library Environments), a metamodel-based framework and visual language for the definition of notions and services related to the development of digital libraries. A collection of tools allows the automatic generation of several services, defined with the CRADLE visual language, and of the graphical user interfaces providing access to them for the final user. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by presenting digital libraries generated with CRADLE, while the CRADLE environment has been evaluated by using the cognitive dimensions framework
