Training an adaptive dialogue policy for interactive learning of visually grounded word meanings
We present a multi-modal dialogue system for interactive learning of
perceptually grounded word meanings from a human tutor. The system integrates
an incremental, semantic parsing/generation framework - Dynamic Syntax and Type
Theory with Records (DS-TTR) - with a set of visual classifiers that are
learned throughout the interaction and which ground the meaning representations
that it produces. We use this system in interaction with a simulated human
tutor to study the effects of different dialogue policies and capabilities on
the accuracy of learned meanings, learning rates, and efforts/costs to the
tutor. We show that the overall performance of the learning agent is affected
by (1) who takes initiative in the dialogues; (2) the ability to express/use
their confidence level about visual attributes; and (3) the ability to process
elliptical and incrementally constructed dialogue turns. Ultimately, we train
an adaptive dialogue policy which optimises the trade-off between classifier

Learning Teaching Strategies in an Adaptive and Intelligent Educational System through Reinforcement Learning
One of the most important issues in Adaptive and Intelligent Educational Systems (AIES) is to define effective pedagogical policies for tutoring students according to their needs. This paper proposes to use Reinforcement Learning (RL) in the pedagogical module of an educational system so that the system learns automatically which is the best pedagogical policy for teaching students. One of the main characteristics of this approach is its ability to improve the pedagogical policy based only on acquired experience with other students with similar learning characteristics. In this paper we study the learning performance of the educational system through three important issues. Firstly, the learning convergence towards accurate pedagogical policies. Secondly, the role of exploration/exploitation strategies in the application of RL to AIES. Finally, a method for reducing the training phase of the AIES.Publicad
Sample Efficient Policy Search for Optimal Stopping Domains
Optimal stopping problems consider the question of deciding when to stop an
observation-generating process in order to maximize a return. We examine the
problem of simultaneously learning and planning in such domains, when data is
collected directly from the environment. We propose GFSE, a simple and flexible
model-free policy search method that reuses data for sample efficiency by
leveraging problem structure. We bound the sample complexity of our approach to
guarantee uniform convergence of policy value estimates, tightening existing
PAC bounds to achieve logarithmic dependence on horizon length for our setting.
We also examine the benefit of our method against prevalent model-based and
model-free approaches on 3 domains taken from diverse fields.Comment: To appear in IJCAI-201

The OTiS (Online Teaching in Scotland) programme, run by the now defunct Scotcit programme, ran an International e-Workshop on Developing Online Tutoring Skills which was held between 8ā12 May 2000. It was organised by HeriotāWatt University, Edinburgh and The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, UK. Out of this workshop came the seminal Online Tutoring E-Book, a generic primer on e-learning pedagogy and methodology, full of practical implementation guidelines. Although the Scotcit programme ended some years ago, the E-Book has been copied to the SONET site as a series of PDF files, which are now available via the ALT Open Access Repository. The editor, Carol Higgison, is currently working in e-learning at the University of Bradford (see her staff profile) and is the Chair of the Association for Learning Technology (ALT)
Designing intelligent computerābased simulations: A pragmatic approach
This paper examines the design of intelligent multimedia simulations. A case study is presented which uses an approach based in part on intelligent tutoring system design to integrate formative assessment into the learning of clinical decisionāmaking skills for nursing students. The approach advocated uses a modular design with an integrated intelligent agent within a multimedia simulation. The application was created using an objectāorientated programming language for the multimedia interface (Delphi) and a logicābased interpreted language (Prolog) to create an expert assessment system. Domain knowledge is also encoded in a Windows help file reducing some of the complexity of the expert system. This approach offers a method for simplifying the production of an intelligent simulation system. The problems developing intelligent tutoring systems are examined and an argument is made for a practical approach to developing intelligent multimedia simulation systems
Energy Efficiency Prediction using Artificial Neural Network
Buildings energy consumption is growing gradually and put away around 40% of total energy use. Predicting heating and cooling loads of a building in the initial phase of the design to find out optimal solutions amongst different designs is very important, as ell as in the operating phase after the building has been finished for efficient energy. In this study, an artificial neural network model was designed and developed for predicting heating and cooling loads of a building based on a dataset for building energy performance. The main factors for input variables are: relative compactness, roof area, overall height, surface area, glazing are a, wall area, glazing area distribution of a building, orientation, and the output variables: heating and cooling loads of the building. The dataset used for training are the data published in the literature for various 768 residential buildings. The model was trained and validated, most important factors affecting heating load and cooling load are identified, and the accuracy for the validation was 99.60%
Modelling human teaching tactics and strategies for tutoring systems
One of the promises of ITSs and ILEs is that they will teach and assist learning in an intelligent manner. Historically this has tended to mean concentrating on the interface, on the representation of the domain and on the representation of the studentās knowledge. So systems have attempted to provide students with reifications both of what is to be learned and of the learning process, as well as optimally sequencing and adjusting activities, problems and feedback to best help them learn that domain. We now have embodied (and disembodied) teaching agents and computer-based peers, and the field demonstrates a much greater interest in metacognition and in collaborative activities and tools to support that collaboration. Nevertheless the issue of the teaching competence of ITSs and ILEs is still important, as well as the more specific question as to whether systems can and should mimic human teachers. Indeed increasing interest in embodied agents has thrown the spotlight back on how such agents should behave with respect to learners. In the mid 1980s Ohlsson and others offered critiques of ITSs and ILEs in terms of the limited range and adaptability of their teaching actions as compared to the wealth of tactics and strategies employed by human expert teachers. So are we in any better position in modelling teaching than we were in the 80s? Are these criticisms still as valid today as they were then? This paper reviews progress in understanding certain aspects of human expert teaching and in developing tutoring systems that implement those human teaching strategies and tactics. It concentrates particularly on how systems have dealt with student answers and how they have dealt with motivational issues, referring particularly to work carried out at Sussex: for example, on responding effectively to the studentās motivational state, on contingent and Vygotskian inspired teaching strategies and on the plausibility problem. This latter is concerned with whether tactics that are effectively applied by human teachers can be as effective when embodied in machine teachers
