    Tailored retrieval of health information from the web for facilitating communication and empowerment of elderly people

    A patient, nowadays, acquires health information from the Web mainly through a “human-to-machine” communication process with a generic search engine. This, in turn, affects, positively or negatively, his/her empowerment level and the “human-to-human” communication process that occurs between a patient and a healthcare professional such as a doctor. A generic communication process can be modelled by considering its syntactic-technical, semantic-meaning, and pragmatic-effectiveness levels and an efficacious communication occurs when all the communication levels are fully addressed. In the case of retrieval of health information from the Web, although a generic search engine is able to work at the syntactic-technical level, the semantic and pragmatic aspects are left to the user and this can be challenging, especially for elderly people. This work presents a custom search engine, FACILE, that works at the three communication levels and allows to overcome the challenges confronted during the search process. A patient can specify his/her information requirements in a simple way and FACILE will retrieve the “right” amount of Web content in a language that he/she can easily understand. This facilitates the comprehension of the found information and positively affects the empowerment process and communication with healthcare professionals

    Revealing User Behaviour on the World-Wide Web

    This paper presents the results of a qualitative study of user behaviour on the World-Wide Web. Eight participants were filmed whilst performing user-defined tasks and then asked to review the video-taped session during prompted recall. This data forms the basis for a series of descriptions of user behaviour and the postulation of a number of underlying cognitive mechanisms. Our results indicate that people: lack ready made search strategies, prefer alternatives that are visible, immediately available and familiar, choose the path of least resistance, exhibit social forms of behaviour, engage in parallel activities, object to misleadingly presented information, have trouble orienting, are late in using appropriate strategies, are sensitive to matters of time, and are emotionally involved in the activity. The paper ends with a discussion of how these results can contribute to our understanding of hypermedia

    Predicting re-finding activity and difficulty

    In this study, we address the problem of identifying if users are attempting to re-find information and estimating the level of difficulty of the re- finding task. We propose to consider the task information (e.g. multiple queries and click information) rather than only queries. Our resultant prediction models are shown to be significantly more accurate (by 2%) than the current state of the art. While past research assumes that previous search history of the user is available to the prediction model, we examine if re-finding detection is possible without access to this information. Our evaluation indicates that such detection is possible, but more challenging. We further describe the first predictive model in detecting re-finding difficulty, showing it to be significantly better than existing approaches for detecting general search difficulty

    Exploring the usage of a video application tool: Experiences in film studies

    This paper explores our experiences in deploying a video application tool in film studies, and its evaluation in terms of realistic contextual end-users who have real tasks to perform in a real environment. We demonstrate our experiences and core lesson learnt in deploying our novel movie browser application with undergraduate and graduate students completing a Film Studies course in Dublin City University over a semester. We developed a system called MOVIEBROWSER2 that has two types of browsing modes: Advanced and Basic. In general, students found that the features we provided were beneficial for their studies. Some issues or mismatches arose during the trial. A ‘wish-list’ was drawn up that might be useful for the future system developer. The contribution and achievements reported in this article are on the demonstration and exploration of how advances in technology can be deployed, and media can be accessed in the context of a real user community. Exploring the usage indicates a positive acceptance among students, besides lessons learned that are important for further investigation

    Understanding and exploiting user intent in community question answering

    A number of Community Question Answering (CQA) services have emerged and proliferated in the last decade. Typical examples include Yahoo! Answers, WikiAnswers, and also domain-specific forums like StackOverflow. These services help users obtain information from a community - a user can post his or her questions which may then be answered by other users. Such a paradigm of information seeking is particularly appealing when the question cannot be answered directly by Web search engines due to the unavailability of relevant online content. However, question submitted to a CQA service are often colloquial and ambiguous. An accurate understanding of the intent behind a question is important for satisfying the user's information need more effectively and efficiently. In this thesis, we analyse the intent of each question in CQA by classifying it into five dimensions, namely: subjectivity, locality, navigationality, procedurality, and causality. By making use of advanced machine learning techniques, such as Co-Training and PU-Learning, we are able to attain consistent and significant classification improvements over the state-of-the-art in this area. In addition to the textual features, a variety of metadata features (such as the category where the question was posted to) are used to model a user's intent, which in turn help the CQA service to perform better in finding similar questions, identifying relevant answers, and recommending the most relevant answerers. We validate the usefulness of user intent in two different CQA tasks. Our first application is question retrieval, where we present a hybrid approach which blends several language modelling techniques, namely, the classic (query-likelihood) language model, the state-of-the-art translation-based language model, and our proposed intent-based language model. Our second application is answer validation, where we present a two-stage model which first ranks similar questions by using our proposed hybrid approach, and then validates whether the answer of the top candidate can be served as an answer to a new question by leveraging sentiment analysis, query quality assessment, and search lists validation

    BioUSeR: a semantic-based tool for retrieving Life Science web resources driven by text-rich user requirements

While most current registries assume that resources are annotated with well-structured metadata, evidence shows that most of the resource annotations simply consists of informal free text. This reality must be taken into account in order to develop effective techniques for resource discovery in Life Sciences. Results: BioUSeRisasemantic-basedtoolaimedatretrievingLifeSciencesresourcesdescribedinfreetext.The retrieval process is driven by the user requirements, which consist of a target task and a set of facets of interest, both expressed in free text. BioUSeR is able to effectively exploit the available textual descriptions to find relevant resources by using semantic-aware techniques.     Replicating web structure in small-scale test collections

    Linkage analysis as an aid to web search has been assumed to be of significant benefit and we know that it is being implemented by many major Search Engines. Why then have few TREC participants been able to scientifically prove the benefits of linkage analysis in recent years? In this paper we put forward reasons why many disappointing results have been found in TREC experiments and we identify the linkage density requirements of a dataset to faithfully support experiments into linkage-based retrieval by examining the linkage structure of the WWW. Based on these requirements we report on methodologies for synthesising such a test collection

    Real Time Web Search Framework for Performing Efficient Retrieval of Data

    With the rapidly growing amount of information on the internet, real-time system is one of the key strategies to cope with the information overload and to help users in finding highly relevant information. Real-time events and domain-specific information are important knowledge base references on the Web that frequently accessed by millions of users. Real-time system is a vital to product and a technique must resolve the context of challenges to be more reliable, e.g. short data life-cycles, heterogeneous user interests, strict time constraints, and context-dependent article relevance. Since real-time data have only a short time to live, real-time models have to be continuously adapted, ensuring that real-time data are always up-to-date. The focal point of this manuscript is for designing a real-time web search approach that aggregates several web search algorithms at query time to tune search results for relevancy. We learn a context-aware delegation algorithm that allows choosing the best real-time algorithms for each query request. The evaluation showed that the proposed approach outperforms the traditional models, in which it allows us to adapt the specific properties of the considered real-time resources. In the experiments, we found that it is highly relevant for most recently searched queries, consistent in its performance, and resilient to the drawbacks faced by other algorithms
