    Multi-agent System Models for Distributed Services Scheduling

    This thesis investigates the computational and modeling issues involved with developing solutions for distributed service scheduling problems. Compared with traditional manufacturing scheduling, service scheduling poses additional challenges due to the significant customer involvement in service processes. The first challenge is that the service scheduling environment is a distributed environment in which scheduling-related information is scattered among individual identities, such as service providers and customers. The second challenge is that the service scheduling environment is a dynamic environment. Uncertainty in customer demand, customer cancellations and no-shows make the scheduling of services a complex dynamic process. Service scheduling has to be robust and prepared to accommodate any contingencies caused by customer involvement in service production. The third challenge concerns customers’ private information. To compute optimal schedules, ideally, the scheduler should know the complete customer availability and preference information within the scheduling horizon. However, customers may act strategically to protect their private information. Therefore, service scheduling systems should be designed so that they are able to elicit enough of a customer’s private information that will make it possible to compute high quality schedules. The fourth challenge is that in a service scheduling environment, the objectives are complicated and they may even be in opposition. The distributed service scheduling environment enables each agent to have their own scheduling objectives. The objectives of these agents can vary from one to another. In addition to multiple objectives, since agents are self-interested, they are likely to behave strategically to achieve their own objectives without considering the global objectives of the system. Existing approaches usually deal with only a part of the challenges in a specific service domain. There is a need for general problem formulations and solutions that address service scheduling challenges in a comprehensive framework. In this thesis, I propose an integrated service scheduling framework for the general service scheduling problem. The proposed framework uses iterative auction as the base mechanism to tackle service scheduling challenges in distributed and dynamic environments. It accommodates customer’s private information by providing appropriate incentives to customers and it has the potential to accommodate dynamic events. This framework integrates customers’ preferences with the allocation of a provider’s capacity through multilateral negotiation between the provider and its customers. The framework can accommodate both price-based commercial settings and non-commercial service settings. Theoretical and experimental results are developed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework. The application of the framework to the mass customization of services and to appointment scheduling are developed to demonstrate the applicability of the general framework to specific service domains. A web-based prototype is designed and implemented to evaluate the scalability of the approach in a distributed environment

    The Roles of Corporate IT Infastructure and their Impact on IS Effectiveness

    In the strategic alignment model of Henderson and Venkatraman (1993) [1] IT infrastructure has an important but only implicitly defined role. According to evolving literature, IT infrastructure serves many different purposes in large companies. We outline the main missions (roles) of the corporate-wide IT infrastructure and its contribution to IS effectiveness and study the relationship of IT infrastructure with alignment processes and strategic integration. Our empirical tests with data from almost one hundred large companies resulted in three IT infrastructure roles, which reflect the IS communality, strategic, and flexibility dimensions of the corporate-wide IT infrastructure. The roles were not symmetrically related to the IS effectiveness and alignment perspectives. IT infrastructure roles had a significant interplay with strategic integration in improving IS effectiveness. However, the interplay of IT infrastructure roles with alignment perspectives had only marginal effects. Implications of the results for research and practice are discussed

    E-procurement Adoption and the impact of culture mediator towards the assessment of accepting a new technology in organisations

    This research project is concerned with the development of a realistic model for e-procurement adoption by organisations and groups observing Rules of Islamic Sharia (RIS). This model is intended to be based on the behavioural control, subjective norms, and the recognition of the benefits and risks of e-procurement adoption. The developed model, “E-Procurement Adoption Model” (E-PAM), combined and extended two existing models previously used for information technology adoption. Central to the design of the E-PAM is the principle that a realistic model should take into account all relevant psychological, social, cultural, demographic and religious factors. The mediating components “mediators” that determine the final model are thus determined by the specific aforementioned factors pertaining to the development of an e-procurement approach in the context of the Rules of Islamic Sharia. Therefore, in the design of the research model, factors including perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, organisational facilitators, organisational leadership, critical success factors, challenges, barriers and benefits were taken into account. These factors in turn gave rise to the two mediating components of ‘Attitude’ and ‘Rules of Islamic Sharia’. A number of hypotheses were made in order to establish links between the contributing factors, the mediators and the adoption of e-procurement as the final dependent variable output of the model. An online questionnaire survey was conducted to validate the hypotheses using a structural equation model. The descriptive analysis of the survey data provided demographic details of the questionnaire participants and their employers and statistical analysis methods were used to correlate the contributing factors and mediators. The analysis of the survey data confirmed the existence of positive relationships between Benefits and Rules of Islamic Sharia, Organisational Facilitators and the Adoption of e-procurement, Organisational Facilitators and Organisational Leadership, and Rules of Islamic Sharia and the Adoption of e-procurement. It was observed that Perceived Usefulness and Organisational Leadership do not influence the adoption of e-procurement. Furthermore, the analysis suggested that Rules of Islamic Sharia is not influenced by Critical Success Factors. This model successfully validated most of the initial hypotheses made regarding e-procurement adoption. The results of this research strongly encourage organisations observing Rules of Islamic Sharia to adopt e-procurement practices

    Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse
