    Exploring the Potential of 3D Visualization Techniques for Usage in Collaborative Design

    Best practice for collaborative design demands good interaction between its collaborators. The capacity to share common knowledge about design models at hand is a basic requirement. With current advancing technologies gathering collective knowledge is more straightforward, as the dialog between experts can be supported better. The potential for 3D visualization techniques to become the right support tool for collaborative design is explored. Special attention is put on the possible usage for remote collaboration. The opportunities for current state-of-the-art visualization techniques from stereoscopic vision to holographic displays are researched. A classification of the various systems is explored with respect to their tangible usage for augmented reality. Appropriate interaction methods can be selected based on the usage scenario

    Measuring user experience for virtual reality

    In recent years, Virtual Reality (VR) and 3D User Interfaces (3DUI) have seen a drastic increase in popularity, especially in terms of consumer-ready hardware and software. These technologies have the potential to create new experiences that combine the advantages of reality and virtuality. While the technology for input as well as output devices is market ready, only a few solutions for everyday VR - online shopping, games, or movies - exist, and empirical knowledge about performance and user preferences is lacking. All this makes the development and design of human-centered user interfaces for VR a great challenge. This thesis investigates the evaluation and design of interactive VR experiences. We introduce the Virtual Reality User Experience (VRUX) model based on VR-specific external factors and evaluation metrics such as task performance and user preference. Based on our novel UX evaluation approach, we contribute by exploring the following directions: shopping in virtual environments, as well as text entry and menu control in the context of everyday VR. Along with this, we summarize our findings by design spaces and guidelines for choosing optimal interfaces and controls in VR.In den letzten Jahren haben Virtual Reality (VR) und 3D User Interfaces (3DUI) stark an PopularitĂ€t gewonnen, insbesondere bei Hard- und Software im Konsumerbereich. Diese Technologien haben das Potenzial, neue Erfahrungen zu schaffen, die die Vorteile von RealitĂ€t und VirtualitĂ€t kombinieren. WĂ€hrend die Technologie sowohl fĂŒr Eingabe- als auch fĂŒr AusgabegerĂ€te marktreif ist, existieren nur wenige Lösungen fĂŒr den Alltag in VR - wie Online-Shopping, Spiele oder Filme - und es fehlt an empirischem Wissen ĂŒber Leistung und BenutzerprĂ€ferenzen. Dies macht die Entwicklung und Gestaltung von benutzerzentrierten BenutzeroberflĂ€chen fĂŒr VR zu einer großen Herausforderung. Diese Arbeit beschĂ€ftigt sich mit der Evaluation und Gestaltung von interaktiven VR-Erfahrungen. Es wird das Virtual Reality User Experience (VRUX)- Modell eingefĂŒhrt, das auf VR-spezifischen externen Faktoren und Bewertungskennzahlen wie Leistung und BenutzerprĂ€ferenz basiert. Basierend auf unserem neuartigen UX-Evaluierungsansatz leisten wir einen Beitrag, indem wir folgende interaktive Anwendungsbereiche untersuchen: Einkaufen in virtuellen Umgebungen sowie Texteingabe und MenĂŒsteuerung im Kontext des tĂ€glichen VR.     An affordable surround-screen virtual reality display

    Building a projection-based virtual reality display is a time, cost, and resource intensive enterprise andmany details contribute to the final display quality. This is especially true for surround-screen displays wheremost of them are one-of-a-kind systems or custom-made installations with specialized projectors, framing, andprojection screens. In general, the costs of acquiring these types of systems have been in the hundreds and evenmillions of dollars, specifically for those supporting synchronized stereoscopic projection across multiple screens.Furthermore, the maintenance of such systems adds an additional recurrent cost, which makes them hard to affordfor a general introduction in a wider range of industry, academic, and research communities.We present a low-cost, easy to maintain surround-screen design based on off-the-shelf affordable componentsfor the projection screens, framing, and display system. The resulting system quality is comparable to significantlymore expensive commercially available solutions. Additionally, users with average knowledge can implement ourdesign and it has the added advantage that single components can be individually upgraded based on necessity aswell as available funds

    Creation of dynamic virtual tours in multimedia spaces

    With the advancement of technology, it has become possible to carry out virtual tours to physical spaces, without being there in person. With the pandemic, this type of technology proved to be of great importance for places like museums due to people only leaving home to go to places of extreme importance, such as the hospital or to buy essential goods, but even that began to be less thanks to the existence of applications like Uber that deliver food at home. In case of physical tours, with the innovation of technology, it is possible to use augmented reality to make the visits more interesting and thus enrich the experience. Although virtual tours are useful, there are still certain difficulties in their implementation due to the inclusion of dynamic elements, such as interaction with people and the scenery. Throughout this paper, these same difficulties will be addressed and explained how they were resolved. Build2050 is a European project coordinated by IPS, which aims to build smart and sustainable buildings. This dissertation consists of the implementation of the technologies mentioned above, to provide different ways of visiting buildings and be more impactful for the visitor
