The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) updated, in 2012, the “Recommendations for Clinical Preventive Services.”, based on the homonymous publication by the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). These recommendations are provided as an aid for physicians in clinical decision making regarding the care of their patients. They reflect the best clinical evidence available at the time of publication. It should be used with the clear understanding that development of new knowledge may consequently result in updates and modifications at the recommended statements. Some recommendations of the USPSTF are important in clinical practice with the elderly, being presented in conjunction with other scientific societies.A American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) atualizou, em 2012, as “Recommendations for Clinical Preventive Services”, com base na publicação homônima editada pela United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). Implementation of an Ultrasound Screening Program in a Rural Family Medicine Practice for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) supports the USPSTF recommendation of a one-time screening assessment of all men aged 65 to 75 years old who have ever smoked for an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) via ultrasonography – grade B recommendation. Despite this, few eligible patients are referred specifically for screening and many patients that are screened only have it performed as an incidental finding of other indications for imaging. AAA screening, when done, has demonstrated up to a 40% reduction in AAA specific deaths and a 3% reduction in all cause mortality after 13 years follow up. The initiation of ultrasound use in a primary care clinic has the potential to not only increase AAA screening but also lead to more widespread use of this imaging modality on a comprehensive level.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1891/thumbnail.jp

The Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) is rapidly emerging as one prototype for redesigning health care delivery, restructuring reimbursement, and reestablishing the critical value of primary care. The actual term “medical home” was introduced by the American Academy of Pediatrics, (AAP) in 1967, initially referring to a central location for archiving a child’s medical record. In 2002, the AAP expanded the medical home concept to include care characterized as accessible, continuous, comprehensive, patient-centered, coordinated, compassionate, and culturally effective. In 2004, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) embraced the model in its Future of Family Medicine project report, and in 2006, the American College of Physicians (ACP) similarly issued a report endorsing the primary care medical home. Soon thereafter in 2007, the AAP, the AAFP, the ACP, and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) wrote a document entitled the Joint Principles of the Patient-Centered Medical Home

The Retrospective Diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Adolescents: Family Physicians\u27 Challenges

    Get PDF
The primary purpose of the study was to identify current retrospective practices used by family physicians in the diagnosis of Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adolescents and young adults. In other words, do physicians adhere to best practices and examine information from childhood in order to diagnose ADHD in adolescents and young adults? In addition, this study aimed to examine the information physicians request for ADHD diagnosis, types of treatments they recommend, the type of information they use to assess treatment outcomes, and professional attitudes regarding the nature of ADHD. Participants completed a questionnaire designed to answer the research questions. Participants included a random sample of members of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP, N = 143) and a convenience sample (N = 84). Results indicated discrepancies between participating physicians\u27 current practices and best diagnostic practices, while these physicians generally reported treatment recommendations consistent with evidence-based practice. Reports of adherence to retrospective diagnostic practices and treatment outcome evaluation were limited, suggesting the need for training as well as collaboration with school professionals. Limitations of the current study and implications for future research are discussed
