Developement of real time diagnostics and feedback algorithms for JET in view of the next step
Real time control of many plasma parameters will be an essential aspect in
the development of reliable high performance operation of Next Step Tokamaks.
The main prerequisites for any feedback scheme are the precise real-time
determination of the quantities to be controlled, requiring top quality and
highly reliable diagnostics, and the availability of robust control algorithms.
A new set of real time diagnostics was recently implemented on JET to prove the
feasibility of determining, with high accuracy and time resolution, the most
important plasma quantities. With regard to feedback algorithms, new
model–based controllers were developed to allow a more robust control of
several plasma parameters. Both diagnostics and algorithms were successfully
used in several experiments, ranging from H-mode plasmas to configuration with
ITBs. Since elaboration of computationally heavy measurements is often
required, significant attention was devoted to non-algorithmic methods like
Digital or Cellular Neural/Nonlinear Networks. The real time hardware and

The opaque square
The problem of finding small sets that block every line passing through a
unit square was first considered by Mazurkiewicz in 1916. We call such a set
{\em opaque} or a {\em barrier} for the square. The shortest known barrier has
length . The current best lower
bound for the length of a (not necessarily connected) barrier is , as
established by Jones about 50 years ago. No better lower bound is known even if
the barrier is restricted to lie in the square or in its close vicinity. Under
a suitable locality assumption, we replace this lower bound by ,
which represents the first, albeit small, step in a long time toward finding
the length of the shortest barrier. A sharper bound is obtained for interior
barriers: the length of any interior barrier for the unit square is at least . Two of the key elements in our proofs are: (i) formulas established
by Sylvester for the measure of all lines that meet two disjoint planar convex
bodies, and (ii) a procedure for detecting lines that are witness to the

Noise control by sonic crystal barriers made of recycled materials
A systematic study of noise barriers based on sonic crystals made of
cylinders that use recycled materials like absorbing component is here
reported. The barriers consist of only three rows of perforated metal shells
filled with rubber crumb. Measurements of reflectance and transmittance by
these barriers are reported. Their attenuation properties result from a
combination of sound absorption by the rubber crumb and reflection by the
periodic distribution of scatterers. It is concluded that porous cylinders can
be used as building blocks whose physical parameters can be optimized in order
to design efficient barriers adapted to different noisy environments
Optimized ensemble Monte Carlo simulations of dense Lennard-Jones fluids
We apply the recently developed adaptive ensemble optimization technique to
simulate dense Lennard-Jones fluids and a particle-solvent model by
broad-histogram Monte Carlo techniques. Equilibration of the simulated fluid is
improved by sampling an optimized histogram in radial coordinates that shifts
statistical weight towards the entropic barriers between the shells of the
liquid. Interstitial states in the vicinity of these barriers are identified
with unprecedented accuracy by sharp signatures in the quickly converging
histogram and measurements of the local diffusivity. The radial distribution
