    Storage of correlated patterns in a perceptron

    We calculate the storage capacity of a perceptron for correlated gaussian patterns. We find that the storage capacity αc\alpha_c can be less than 2 if similar patterns are mapped onto different outputs and vice versa. As long as the patterns are in general position we obtain, in contrast to previous works, that αc≄1\alpha_c \geq 1 in agreement with Cover's theorem.     Defects and multistability in eutectic solidification patterns

    We use three-dimensional phase-field simulations to investigate the dynamics of the two-phase composite patterns formed upon during solidification of eutectic alloys. Besides the spatially periodic lamellar and rod patterns that have been widely studied, we find that there is a large number of additional steady-state patterns which exhibit stable defects. The defect density can be so high that the pattern is completely disordered, and that the distinction between lamellar and rod patterns is blurred. As a consequence, the transition from lamellae to rods is not sharp, but extends over a finite range of compositions and exhibits strong hysteresis.     Acoustic radiation patterns for a source in a hard-walled unflanged circular duct

    Acoustic radiation patterns are measured over a 320 deg arc for a point source in a finite length, hard walled, unflanged circular duct. The measured results are compared with computed results which are based on the Wiener-Hopf solution for radiation from a semi-infinite unflanged duct. Measurements and computations are presented for frequencies slightly below and slightly above each of the first four higher order radial mode cutoff frequencies. It is found that the computed and measured patterns show better agreement below the mode cut-off frequencies than above and that the agreement is better at lower frequencies that at higher frequencies. The computed radiation patterns do not show fine lobes which are caused by diffraction from the back end of the duct

    Voter attitudes to inter-party transfers in Northern Ireland: a median-difference analysis of inter-party transfers in the 1982 and 1998 Assembly elections

    The impact of the 1998 peace agreement in Northern Ireland on electoral behaviour is analysed in this article by plotting median differences in inter-party transfers under the PR by Single Transferable Vote system used in 1998 and in 1982. There is clear evidence that moderate and militant nationalists have followed the lead of their party elites and have transferred lower preference votes to each other at higher levels and more consistently in 1998 than in 1982. Patterns of change within unionism are more complex. While there were some signs of a slightly increased willingness from pro-Agreement unionists to transfer to moderate nationalists and a fall in the percentage of transfers to anti-Agreement unionists, there was still considerable consistency of support between the unionist parties despite the split over the peace agreement

    Double-slot antennas on extended hemispherical dielectric lenses

    An investigation of the coupling efficiencies to a gaussian-beam of a double-slot antenna on a hyperhemispherical lens is presented. It is shown that both lenses couple equally well to an appropriate gaussian beam (about 80 percent). The radiation patterns of both lenses with a double-slot antenna are computed using the ray-tracing method. The experimental radiation patterns are presented and show close agreement to the theoretically computed patterns

    Classification of lower extremity movement patterns based on visual assessment: reliability and correlation with 2-dimensional video analysis

    CONTEXT: Abnormal movement patterns have been implicated in lower extremity injury. Reliable, valid, and easily implemented assessment methods are needed to examine existing musculoskeletal disorders and investigate predictive factors for lower extremity injury. OBJECTIVE: To determine the reliability of experienced and novice testers in making visual assessments of lower extremity movement patterns and to characterize the construct validity of the visual assessments. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: University athletic department and research laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Convenience sample of 30 undergraduate and graduate students who regularly participate in athletics (age = 19.3 ± 4.5 years). Testers were 2 experienced physical therapists and 1 novice postdoctoral fellow (nonclinician). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): We took videos of 30 athletes performing the single-legged squat. Three testers observed the videos on 2 occasions and classified the lower extremity movement as dynamic valgus, no change, or dynamic varus. The classification was based on the estimated change in frontal-plane projection angle (FPPA) of the knee from single-legged stance to maximum single-legged squat depth. The actual FPPA change was measured quantitatively. We used percentage agreement and weighted Îș to examine tester reliability and to determine construct validity of the visual assessment. RESULTS: The Îș values for intratester and intertester reliability ranged from 0.75 to 0.90, indicating substantial to excellent reliability. Percentage agreement between the visual assessment and the quantitative FPPA change category was 90%, with a Îș value of 0.85. CONCLUSIONS: Visual assessments were made reliably by experienced and novice testers. Additionally, movement-pattern categories based on visual assessments were in excellent agreement with objective methods to measure FPPA change. Therefore, visual assessments can be used in the clinic to assess movement patterns associated with musculoskeletal disorders and in large epidemiologic studies to assess the association between lower extremity movement patterns and musculoskeletal injury
